My pulse raced and my heart pounded as I, along with so many others, went online to see the second trailer for the new Star Wars Film.

Many of you went to the Star Wars Celebration Apr. 16-19 and many wrote to me to ask my opinion about this new trailer.

Well I liked it.  I loved it.  A small wave of relief swept over me as I thought, JJ Abrams just might pull this off.  I felt just like Han Solo. For the first time in a long time I felt home.

I couldn’t make it to the Celebration event, but I felt I was a part of it with the info, tweets and streaming that continued to sail over the Internet during the event.  Wow, we really are living in a new connected world.

My mind flashed as I was teleported back in time to the first day I saw Star Wars. I had cut class. (Not advising that, of course. I’m being honest)

It was a different time then as the big movies were all love stories for the most part. For folks like me Sci-Fi films were few and far between.  I remember my friend (now my husband coincidentally) handing me a book and saying,  “You should read this as the films coming out in a couple of weeks.”

On the day Star Wars opened I was completely overcome with emotion, excitement and the burning desire to make this my career.  Star Wars, as I wrote in previous article, was the film that changed my life.  It was the film that caused a huge door to open in my head as I realized that I could make a living at something that I thought up until that point was only a hobby.

Now with my heart pounding I wondered,

“Could J.J. Abrams be like me? “

Was he also thunderstruck in the theatre when he saw Star Wars for the first time? Was Star Wars instrumental in his pursuing to become a director?

Believe me, there are many people like me who work in the entertainment field who can trace their industry interest back to the first day sitting in the theater seeing Star Wars. When I was working on many of the films I have been part of, we would often talk about how Star Wars was the big bang which helped get us to where we are today.

So, why not J.J. Abrams?

By the look of the last trailer, this is exactly what I suspect is the truth, and I sure hope I’m right.  J.J. Abrams is a fan.  “Thank the Maker!”

I’m not sure he’s a super squid fan like myself.  How many people really go to the extent I have to see the film over 100 times and stand in line for 3 days to get the first ticket at the opening of The Empire Strikes Back?  But I sure see the signs of someone who has done his homework.

Back when Star Wars 1,2,3 burst on the scene my heart sank and continued to break with the viewing of each of these monstrosities.  Oh yes, Jar Jar Binks was bad.  However, what made me insane was the fact that George Lucas didn’t seem to have reviewed the original trilogy he himself wrote.

I was a squid fan, meaning that I collected a ton of original Star Wars stuff.  Included in my collection were original signed scripts from all three films.  Plus, the 12 book treatments that George Lucas used to present his film to producers.

There were 12 book treatments.  He’d done all the work . . . all he had to do was read.  Why didn’t he?  No one can really tell.  But you know a film is really bad when the only reason that Obi Wan Kenobi wins against Darth Maul is because Obi Wan is in the sequel.

Oh the pain.  Then it just kept coming, and hurting with each of those films.  So now Disney comes along and says they’ve bought the Star Wars franchise and that new film is in the works. I was worried that I’d be let down again.

I remember saying, “Why doesn’t George hire one of the fans that are now in the business because of his film?”  It seemed so simple to me.

Well, after hearing all the enthusiasm from all of you at the Star Wars Celebration event and after seeing the latest trailer, I think I got my wish.  I think this new film will be amazing, and I’m looking so forward to it, I can barely breathe.

I have great hope.  I believe this is because of JJ Abrams.

Whoo Hoo!

So I pledge to wait and see just how this film turns out.  Let’s continue to give J.J. Abrams and Disney our support.

Oh I know, I too was disappointed when I realized that I would not get to hear those amazing drums at the beginning of the new Star Wars film as 20th Century Fox is no longer in the driver’s seat.  I admit, this is a big one. However, there’s nothing more annoying then having a bunch of people critique a film before it’s released.  So if you have to hum a few bars.

It’s so easy to voice opinions good and bad today as we have a multitude of ways to be heard nowadays.

I believe that Disney and J.J. are doing everything they can to help us feel the electricity of a great film once again in seeing Star Wars Episode VII-The Force Awakens.
