Disneyland‘s popular holiday season will come to a close this week as the park heads into 2016 eager to get construction on the 14-acre new Star Wars Land underway. That Star Wars-themed expansion of Disneyland will mean big changes in Frontierland that will force the permanent closure of Big Thunder Ranch along with the shuttering of the Rivers of America and its various attractions for over a year while Disney Imagineers reduce and reroute the River to free up space for Star Wars Land’s massive footprint. Today we take a look at the Rivers of America and examine what the changes to this iconic part of the park means for Disneyland before it closes at the end of the day on Sunday. We also take a look at the new Cove Bar expansion in Disney California Adventure and take a side trip to Pasadena, California to see the Rose Parade floats, including Disneyland’s impressive Diamond Celebration float.

Rivers of a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Today we take a look at Disneyland’s historic Rivers of America in pictures along with our own thoughts in the form of an editorial at the end of our photo essay.
Rivers of America, Disneyland’s historic Rivers of America prepare to set sail one last time before Star Wars Land moves in

Our River photo essay is broken up into four sections, with details on on how the River is rumored to change scattered throughout. But before we get started, we should explain some basics on how the River is expected to change. Current rumors suggest a couple options for how the River may change course to accommodate the planned Star Wars Land — the leading rumors we’ve been hearing point toward a dramatically reduced river, with the path of the River cutting through the back half of Tom Sawyer Island and immediately making a U-Turn around the new back of the island, just past the Hungry Bear Restaurant. The River is expected to pass immediately behind Fort Wilderness and the back half of the island currently featuring show elements such as Mike Fink’s cabin and the beaver dam would be removed entirely. This would effectively eliminate the River’s wonderful backwoods section, including the Native Ameircan village, which is expected to be relocated. The Disneyland Railroad would pass along the back edge of the River’s new route, curving around the southern edge of Star Wars Land and then back up to the existing Mickey’s Toon Town Railroad Station.

To give you visual context before we start, we’ve mocked up the changes in an interactive before-and-after map below. Slide back and forth between the current river and the rumored future. Please note maps are approximate, based on what we’ve heard from sources. They’re to help illustrate the rumored future, they aren’t the blueprint of the plans.

The River changes are expected to take shape in this area. Currently, as you pass the Hungry Bear Restaurant on the left, the River lazily curves to the right, continuing north.

The plan is that the river would reach the Hungry Bear and immediately U-Turn around an abbreviated Island, passing immediately behind the Fort Wilderness.

This would eliminate the entire backwoods portion of your river journey, which could severely limit the ride’s ability for the escapism it currently allows for.

That backwoods portion is important, allowing for you to really feel removed from the hustle and bustle of Disneyland and the real city that surrounds the park. A rare moment of escape in urban Orange County.

The river comes alive with the various forms of river traffic that ply the waters. Disney has promised the Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia and Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes will all return when the River reopens in 2017 but plans can always change.

Walt’s Island

The re-routing of the river will bring big changes to Tom Sawyer Island, the only part of Disneyland personally designed by Walt Disney. The Island will effectively be cut in half, leaving behind only the areas of the Island currently accessible to guests.

Back on the mainland, the rerouting of the river and the Disneyland Railroad path will result in changes along Big Thunder Trail and the larger Star Wars Land area will include absorbing what is now Big Thunder Ranch.

Thoughts on the River

2015 was more or less a good year for Disneyland. The park got significant refurbishments and enhancements, a successful new nighttime parade and fireworks show, and celebrated its sixth decade; a milestone which is nothing short of tremendous. For a park that had initially been mocked as being “Walt’s folly,” Disneyland has gone on to be a smash success; an American icon, a childhood rite of passage, a muse, a best friend, and a home-away-from-home for millions of people. It is a quintessential American creation—an embodiment of the American dream. It’s that elusive creation that’s equal parts art and business that people try to recreate every day. Indeed, Disneyland is a business and for six decades Disneyland has made its business by evolving to meet the entertainment needs and demands of a constantly changing public. So isn’t the new Star Wars Land simply a continuation of that? Isn’t this the natural next piece in Walt Disney’s never-completed Disneyland?

Star Wars Land will undoubtedly be a smash hit for Disney. The concept art looks spectacular and projects like Cars Land and early progress on the Avatar project in Walt Disney World shows that Disney can deliver super-immersive environments and Star Wars Land promises to make even those projects look like child’s play. Much like The Force Awakens, Star Wars Land Is positioned to crush every record in the books for Disney, with the potential to surpass the quality and success of Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter areas. But Universal, Disney California Adventure and Disney’s Animal Kingdom didn’t have six decades of history to consider before going under the knife. Disneyland does and it’s uniquely tied to the attitudes and ideals of a single visionary man. Say what you will about Walt being dead, but the reality is that the park still has his name on the front door and his mid-western, mid-century ideals can still be seen throughout the park. It’s those ideals, those interests, and those dreams, that are what people are describing when they say that Disneyland is different than other theme parks or that they can feel Walt’s touch. Those ideals are arguably Disneyland’s lifeblood; a core set of values and a thematic foundation that no other park has but that every other park dreams of having because it resonates with people and makes them feel comfortable, at home, welcome. It’s grandma’s house at Christmas – the old and new generations together, nostalgic but full of energy and promise.
Rivers of America, Disneyland’s historic Rivers of America prepare to set sail one last time before Star Wars Land moves in

That sort of power isn’t easy to come by and is the reason why Disneyland as an entertainment experience has become a cultural institution. Disneyland is America and its aspirations, encapsulated in loose themes where we can picture ourselves and become part of our national and cultural histories, fairytales, and future. This is why Star Tours works in Tomorrowland. Star Tours continued the story of American space exploration, which began with our real race to the moon aboard Disneyland’s Rocket to the Moon in the 1950s. As part of Tomorrowland’s broad-strokes theme, Star Wars found a home in Disneyland that felt natural. But dedicating an entire land to Star Wars will change Disneyland by doing away with the thematic model the park has operated on for 60 years in favor of the current industry trend of creating entire lands based off single intellectual properties.

Star Wars Land will be an unprecedented shift for how Disneyland operates on deep, thematic levels that Guests may not consciously think about but that are part of the psychological fabric of why Disneyland has been such a juggernaut cultural institution for 60 years. Moreover, the ramifications of building a single-IP land in Disneyland doesn’t just affect thematic intangibles; Star Was Land will impact the park’s physical landscape and history in dramatic ways. Disney has confirmed Star Wars Land will require the rerouting of the Rivers of America, an opening-day feature of the park that has never changed course in its history. The “rerouting” of the river is, in reality, a shortening of its path, with rumors that the river could be reduced by thirty to forty percent. This would reduce the river from a 12-minute experience that can feel like a real escape to nothing more than a fleeting amusement park novelty. Some fans have taken to social media to chastise critics of the plans, claiming that the river will reopen with a change in course that will be practically imperceptible. Based on the realities of Disneyland as a business, to believe such a thing is folly. The cost to close the river for over a year, drain it, and undergo significant construction to reroute it so Disney can gain only a few feet in space is illogical. This change will not be insignificant — Disney simply cannot afford for it to be.
Rivers of America, Disneyland’s historic Rivers of America prepare to set sail one last time before Star Wars Land moves in

Furthermore, rerouting the river won’t simply affect the path of the Mark Twain Riverboat, it will impact everything on the River and related to the River. Tom Sawyer Island will be reduced in size, with the back half of the island that is inaccessible to guests but home to the settler’s cabin and other river show elements set to removed entirely. Cast Members, meanwhile, are wondering what will become of their historic, annual Canoe Races. If the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes do return, the race will now be shorter and all race times after 2015 will be incompatible with historical times and records, significantly changing a 60-year tradition. Disney has said the Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia will return, but they haven’t specified in what capacity. Operationally, would the Mark Twain and Columbia, with their slower load times, still be able to run simultaneously on the river as they were designed to? There are already occasions where the Twain or Columbia have to stall on the River while the other boat finishes loading and a shorter river would only severely compound this issue, potentially making it impractical for both boats to operate concurrently. If both can’t feasibly operate together, will they just permanently dock one of them, only to pull it out for the nightly Fantasmic! performance? As far as the Twain is concerned, rumors have begun trickling out that Disneyland intends on turning the Mark Twain into a tea time dining experience with Princess Tiana while the River is closed for refurbishment. While Disney hasn’t officially announced it, such a plan wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility. Similar rumors circulated in recent years about the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World having similar desires for its Liberty Belle Riverboat and when the fabled Discovery Bay was still planned to take over Big Thunder Ranch in the 1990s, Disney told the Orange County Register that both the Columbia and Mark Twain would be docked and permanently converted into restaurants. So, should the Princess Tiana tea time experience happen later this year and become popular, it could potentially be the death knell for the Mark Twain Riverboat as a functional vessel.
Rivers of America, Disneyland’s historic Rivers of America prepare to set sail one last time before Star Wars Land moves in

Historically speaking, a number of these changes could end up being significant blows to the rich history of the Walt Disney Company. The River itself is a major feature of Disneylad that hasn’t seen significant change since park opening. The Mark Twain was, for its time, the first authentic, functional steam-powered paddle wheeler built in the United States in half a century. The Mark Twain played host to Walt and Lillian Disney’s wedding anniversary party, just days before Disneyland officially opened to the public. The Columbia opened in 1958 and is a full-scale replica of the real Columbia Rediviva, the first American ship to circle the globe. The crew’s quarters below decks were added in 1964, making it an even stronger example of the “edutainment” Walt sought to infuse throughout his park. Tom Sawyer Island’s original plan was personally sketched by Walt; making it the only part of Disneyland that was personally designed by him. Much of the Island’s original features remain in place today, despite their pirate-themed overlays.

Is all of this worth it for Star Wars? Surely there had to be less-invasive options on the table, or perhaps there weren’t any considered because the Walt Disney Company simply doesn’t care about the history it simultaneously destroys while profiting from. The thread of hope here is that Disney has officially promised the river and all of its attractions will eventually reopen. Thematically, rumors are circulating that the River will come back with major scenic enhancements. Still, whispers persist that some features may not return. It wouldn’t be a problem for Disney to wait until mid-2017, just before the River reopens, to say that the project grew during construction and more of the river, Island, or a ship were lost as part of the project’s evolution. They’d have an excuse that nobody could argue with and it would be too late for fans to protest or the public react – the damage would already be done.

And it’s that damage that’s concerning. Once the bulldozers move in later this year, none of it will be able to be undone. Just look at the recent Club 33 expansion — that project not only ravaged the historically accurate and richly-themed facades of New Orleans Square but the club suffered a wholesale removal of its history that cannot be restored. They can add more wrought iron details on the facades and put the shell of the French Lift up in the corner of the club, but they can’t bring back any of what was lost. This will be true to an even greater scale with the Rivers of America. The River isn’t an attraction that only the rich can see; it’s something any average guest can experience in a variety of ways through multiple attractions. It’s an opening-day feature of the park that has remained relatively unchanged over the same 60 years that Disneyland is currently profiting from during its on-going Diamond Celebration. What happens when they exhaust all of the park’s history and the ties to Walt Disney because they’ve removed them all?
Rivers of America, Disneyland’s historic Rivers of America prepare to set sail one last time before Star Wars Land moves in

Growing Disneyland while maintaining its history is certainly a fine balancing act. Disneyland saw its biggest attendance ever in 2015, thanks to the park’s ever-growing popularity and its wildly successful 60th anniversary celebration. The park is constantly packed now and during peak holiday season and during Disney’s recent 24-hour events it can see dangerous crowd levels. Disneyland is in desperate need of new capacity but any major new attraction has the potential of not only impacting historic areas of the park but bringing crowds that could force Disneyland and its already underbuilt infrastructure to operational gridlock. Star Wars Land will certainly add capacity but will do so with the help of one of the biggest film franchises in history. On paper, this sounds good: it’s a guaranteed success on a greater scale than Disney’s own Cars Land or even Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter. But this ignores the operational realities of a park like Disneyland. Not only will Star Wars Land change Disneyland thematically and historically but it will force new operational demands on the park that it was never built for and may never be able to properly handle. Building Star Wars Land in the far back of the park not only limits the land’s future expansion possibilities but has the potential to create significant crowd flow issues in and out of Fantasyland and Frontierland, the two primary access routes for the new land. Meanwhile, the new 14-acre land is officially set to feature only two attractions, both of which will be E-Tickets. While Disney has released little details on the new rides, if their recent track record is any indication, they’ll likely be dazzling experiences but woefully insufficient in terms of the capacity demands Disneyland has.

Simply put, two Star Wars E-ticket spectacles with potentially low capacity is not what Disneyland needs and will only cause more problems for the park. Hopefully I’m proven wrong and these will be reliable people-eaters, but I won’t hold my breath – the days of high-capacity mega-rides for the entire family like Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion are long gone. Fast-moving, interactive, and lower-capacity fare like Radiator Springs Racers or Toy Story Midway Mania are the new gold standard at Disney Parks but it’s a standard that is ultimately unsustainable for a small park with finite room to expand like Disneyland. What Disneyland could possibly best benefit from is new high-capacity attractions that aren’t based on IPs. Attractions that add huge capacity but that won’t draw huge new crowds because of its IP – something like the Peoplemover, for example. New people-eaters would soak up Disneyland’s existing crowds without drawing more and Star Wars Land could be saved for the Resort’s third park — a solution that would be beneficial for Disneyland and the Resort’s long-term health.
Rivers of America, Disneyland’s historic Rivers of America prepare to set sail one last time before Star Wars Land moves in

Of course, building a third gate and all necessary infrastructure to support it would take far more time and money than adding Star Wars Land to the back of Disneyland but it would be a better long-term plan than tacking Star Wars onto the back of Frontierland. Building a third gate with Star Wars as the park’s anchor would give Disney a clean slate to work with and room for future Star Wars expansions—a luxury they simply won’t have at Disneyland. Star Wars Land won’t be a one-time thing — with The Force Awakens breaking every box office record in the books and Star Wars films set to come out every year for the foreseeable future, the demand for Star Wars in the parks won’t be tapering off anytime soon. Star Wars fans are already chomping at the bit for Star Wars in the parks—why not give it to them bigger, better and with the ability to truly expand in the future? Pursuing a third park now would also force Disney to address the painfully inadequate parking and infrastructure problems the Resort is already burdened with. Fixing the Resort’s infrastructure problems is going to have to happen sooner or later anyway, so why not get started now? Disneyland is already performing at record levels, Star Wars Land isn’t going to give the park a shot in the arm; it may just end up crippling it further.
Rivers of America, Disneyland’s historic Rivers of America prepare to set sail one last time before Star Wars Land moves in

So, as we say goodbye to yet more of Disneyland’s history, I hope that Disney has taken the time to consider how their plans will be impacting a park that is so steeped in history and cultural importance. Disney — you aren’t dramatically changing parks that are rife with problems like Disney’s Hollywood Studios or Disney California Adventure — you’re changing the one and only Disneyland when you have the ability to turn this into a third theme park with the opportunity for even more revenue than what Star Wars Land could bring in. Disneyland is the park plays a recording of Walt Disney over the speaker system every July 17th, offers menu items dubbed “Walt’s Favorites” at restaurants, and is the park that can charge $109 for a Walt-themed guided tour. You can’t recreate that history (and that revenue stream) once it’s gone.

MiceChat’s Last Day of the River Meet-Up

Are you planning on saying goodbye to the Rivers of America this weekend? Join your MiceChat friends for a day on Walt Disney’s Rivers of America before it changes for Star Wars.
Rivers of America, Disneyland’s historic Rivers of America prepare to set sail one last time before Star Wars Land moves in
After 60 years, Disneyland is changing forever due to a new Star Wars Land. So let’s celebrate Walt’s legacy by visiting those winding Rivers of America and the attractions that have been enjoyed by generations one last time before they change forever.

Join us for a fun-filled day of classic attractions. Feel free to come-and-go as you wish, and watch this page throughout the day for updates and details if plans need to change for some reason.

Most of the attractions we’ll visit will close at the end of the day for quite a period of time (up to 18 months). Time to get that “One Last Ride” in.

    The Schedule:

    • 9:00 a.m. – Fantasmic! Fastpass: We’ll start by meeting at the Fantasmic! Fastpass machines, to ensure that those who want to see the show can get a FastPass.
    • 9:30 a.m. – Grand Circle Tour of Disneyland: Meet at the New Orleans Square station for a final trip around the Froniter as we know it today aboard the Disneyland Railroad.
    • 10:00 a.m. – Big Boats: Meet at the Frontierland Landing for a final 15-minute cruise around the Rivers of America aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat. If the Sailing Ship Columbia is operating that day, we’ll climb aboard for a sailing of that too.
    • 11:00 a.m. – Canoes: Grab a paddle and we’ll send off the Canoes in style. These are expected to close for much longer than the other RoA attractions.
    • 12:00 Noon – MiceChat Hub Meet: MiceChat has been meeting at the hub to chat about Disneyland and its changes over the last decade. Join us for a classic meet with Walt and Mickey.
    • 12:30 p.m. – Lunch at Hungry Bear: Rumored to be altered, or removed – we’ll get one last lunch from those big ol’ loveable bears, with great dockside views of the Rivers of America.
    • 2:00 p.m. – Tom Sawyer’s Island: After lunch, we’ll explore what’s left of Tom Sawyer’s Island, one of the only Disneyland attractions that Walt completly oversaw himself.
    • 3:00 p.m. – Jungle Cruise: In addition to the rivers, Jungle Cruise will be drained to install a new boat-loading platform in 2016. We’ll give one last wave to the people on the dock until this classic returns.
    • 4:00 p.m. – Autopia: Autopia will be closing as well to get a new theme for its Honda sponsorship, so we’ll take one last ride through the Car Park on Dusty, Suzy, and Sparky.

Join us as we send off some classic Disneyland attractions in style. Disneyland will always change, but come make some memories of the way we’ll always remember it!

Everybody Loves a Parade!

The annual Rose Parade was held on New Year’s Day in Pasadena, CA and featured a float from the Disneyland Resort for the first time in a decade. We visited the post-parade float viewing over the New Year weekend.

The Disneyland Resort float was the biggest float in the parade and featured three sections celebrating Frozen, Disneyland’s Diamond Celebration and Star Wars.

Of course the numerous other Rose Parade floats were also on display and were a delight to look at. It’s really impressive to see the floats up close and see all of the hard work on display. If you ever get a chance to go to the Post Parade viewing days, don’t pass it up! Below check out a few of our favorites.

This & That

Back in Disneyland, the River Belle Terrace will become a table service restaurant starting February 10. The change will mean the end of the River Belle’s popular breakfast service.

In Disney California Adventure, the new Cove Bar expansion opened over the holidays. It’s a fine enough extension of the popular dining location but nothing terribly remarkable. It serves its purpose and is long-overdue.
