Breaking: Disney Studios and Marvel Studios Say They’ll Boycott if Georgia Passes Anti-Gay Law

AMC, the company that films The Walking Dead just outside of Atlanta, has also joined in, along with quite a few other companies. Film production brings in several BILLION dollars to the state and thousands of jobs. This is the governor’s last term, so he’s taking his sweet time signing or vetoing it. It is not known at this time if there are enough votes to overturn a veto. He’s a very business-friendly governor, so the feeling is that he will veto it with the explanation that businesses already have “the right to refuse service to anyone”, and that it’s more important to keep Georgians employed.

If you live in Georgia, you can call the governor’s office and let him know what you think: (404) 656-1776.

Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival!

Noe, Alice, Luisa (Noe’s mom) and I went to Day One of Knott’s Boysenberry Festival. It was packed! The festival is a huge success. I foresee it becoming a two-month long event in the future. We had a chance to nosh, the other two gals sampled wines and beers, and I talked to people from all walks of life: well-to-do wine collectors in designer sweats from Newport Beach, a 40-year-old woman from Norco and her mother, dressed in matching outfits, a dad watching in amused horror as his 11-year-old son tucked away a Fun Bun in less than three minutes then proclaimed that he wanted to ride Silver Bullet, a really nice, fun couple who loved the Boysenberry Wine but hated the Sangria. Lots of people who come every year just for the festival – and lots of Boysenberry Festival evangelists!

Tragedy at Disney’s Contemporary Resort

0602AR_7755GV33955670-742x493

News reports say that someone died from a fall from a tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort on Tuesday. The Orange County Sheriff’s office is handling the investigation, which is tentatively believed to be a suicide, according to county investigators. The Walt Disney World Monorail System was closed during the initial investigation but reopened shortly afterward. No further information is available.

If you feel like there’s no other solution than ending your own life, go to http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org or call 1-800-273-TALK (8255). There are people there who have been there, and who can help you, or at least listen.  How do I know? Personal experience.

I know what it’s like. I’ve been there. I made plans. I went through papers, made sure things were in order, insurance, etc. that there wasn’t anything that would be terribly embarassing nor messy found; I won’t discuss the method, but I had it planned out in much the same fashion. I got hold, or tried to get hold, of old friends to tell them I loved them but made sure to keep it light and open. I just had to prepare my 14-year-old daughter.

While driving her home from school, I casually explained to her that sometimes people were so sick and there was no cure that would help, so the best thing was to allow them to die with dignity. To this, she agreed. Then, I posited that mental illness could be just as painful as physical illness. To this, she also agreed. Then I explained that I, for instance, could be one of those people, perhaps. To suicidal me, it sounded like I was being completely responsible and rational. Alice freaked out and started yelling and crying. That jolted me out of my false reality and I got the help I needed. And, yes, I asked her permission before sharing this with you.

I actually have a very complex diagnosis. Schizoaffective disorder plus Autism Spectrum Disorder. I thought the voices I heard were how everyone eperienced thoughts sometimes. Nope! I’m bipolar! (Everyone who knew me in the nineties is so not surprised right now.) It took almost ten years to get my medications right. I’m going to be on medication and under a doctor’s care for the rest of my life, and I can’t drink alcohol while I’m taking them – and I’m perfectly fine with that. I feel like I got a second chance at life. Totally worth it. So..Michelle became Shelly, the nickname only my late brother called me. Honors him, reminds me every time I hear it that I have that second chance and I’m going to make the best of it.

Thank you!
