I started this column for MiceChat with no book to sell or podcast to promote, but figured that I’d perhaps get to go on one of those cool roller coaster hard hat construction tours one day. Excitement ran high when the email finally arrived with the details for taking in The Joker at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. But fate can conspire against any of us, and I quickly noticed that the tour would take place on a day I would actually be in Walt Disney’s Original Magic Kingdom hundreds of miles away. The Joker, which will be the Hybrid conversion of the late, great Roar, sure sounds like it will be fun. The official word is thus: “On this new adventure, you’ll race through chaotic twists and turns, including a first ever step-up under-flip, inverted roll, that takes riders horizontal. THE JOKER also has a unique breaking wave turn, the only one of its kind on the West Coast. Additionally, you’ll tackle a wild Zero G barrel roll, three unbelievable inversions, and 15 moments of airtime like you’ve never experienced before at ride speeds up to 53 miles per hour.”

The Joker is scheduled to open in “Spring 2016”, and as Universal showed us with the original Hogsmeade in Florida, it is technically spring well into June. So we’ll just have to wait for the official announcement, but meantime, we are going to turn to my son Colin.

Since I was unable to attend the construction tour, I handed Colin a camera, aimed him towards Vallejo, and sent him forth to do his Daddy proud. And we all benefit, because he did just that. So I’ll let the photos do the talking while awaiting my turn to actually ride The Joker on a future Day By The Bay.

These hybrid coasters are becoming quite popular, and for good reason. Are you looking forward to the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Joker?
