Fans of the Muppets and Haunted Mansion have something to celebrate. Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of the gang will scare up some fun in their first-ever Halloween special inspired by one of Disney’s most iconic attractions. The Disney+ original special, “Muppets Haunted Mansion,” begins streaming October 8.

First announced in May, Gonzo the Great, a world-famous daredevil artiste, is challenged to spend one very daring night in the most grim grinning place on Earth: the Haunted Mansion.

“Muppets Haunted Mansion” will be a feast for anyone who’s ridden the Haunted Mansion attraction with many hidden and not-so-hidden Easter eggs. According to a press release, the film is inspired by the Haunted Mansion attractions located at various Disney Parks from around the globe.

Iconic moments from the attraction will be immortalized as plot devices throughout the film, and is sure to get a smile out of any Disney fan. In the first-look trailer, Gonzo and Pepe the King Prawn walk into a Muppetised stretching room with a “Ghost Host.” We also get glimpses of a candelabra floating mysteriously up a stairwell, a portrait corridor with paintings that morph into macabre images, and Miss Piggy’s head as “Madame Pigota” floating in a crystal ball.

Keep a Lookout for a Few Foolish Mortals

In the tradition of peppering celebrity cameos throughout their films, “Muppets Haunted Mansion” will not disappoint. The film will feature special appearances from Will Arnett, Taraji P. Henson, Chrissy Metz, Alfonso Ribeiro, Ed Asner (in his first posthumous appearance), Jeannie Mai, Danny Trejo, Sasheer Zamata, Skai Jackson, Pat Sajak, Yvette Nicole Brown, Geoff Keighley, and John Stamos.

Imagineer Kim Irvine will make a cameo as well. Irvine is the daughter of Imagineer Leota Toombs, best known for providing the face of Madame Leota and Little Leota in the Haunted Mansion attraction. Irvine provides her own face for Madame Leota in the “Haunted Mansion Holiday” winter overlay.

“Glee” star Darren Criss also joins the cast as a very familiar character from the attraction. Criss posted a publicity photo of himself as ‘The Caretaker’ to his Instagram account. “Take care foolish mortals cuz I’m care-takin’ with @themuppets for their Halloween special, The Muppets Haunted Mansion coming soon to @disneyplus,” wrote Criss. “Check this grim grinning bro out to socialize…”

As an added bonus, the “Muppets Haunted Mansion” will feature three new original songs titled “Rest in Peace,” “Life Hereafter” and “Tie the Knot Tango,” plus a cover of “Dancing in the Moonlight.”

The film is directed by Kirk R. Thatcher, and executive produced by Bill Barretta, Andrew Williams, David Lightbody, and Leigh Slaughter.

“Muppets Haunted Mansion” is just one of the spooky specials Disney+ is adding to its library for “Hallowstream.” The spooky comedy joins “LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales,” “Just Beyond,” and a remake of Disney’s “Under Wraps.” “Muppets Haunted Mansion” premieres October 8, exclusively on Disney+.

When Hinges Creak in Doorless Chambers

When Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion opened in 1969, the groundbreaking attraction meshed centuries-old theatrical effects with cutting edge technology to create illusions of the supernatural, such as a Pepper’s ghost effect and innovative Audio-Animatronic figures.

In 1970, The Osmond Brothers, Kurt Russell and E.J. Peaker went behind the scenes of the making of the Disneyland’s then newest attraction, the Haunted Mansion. “Disneyland Showtime,” an episode of NBC’s anthology series “The Wonderful World of Disney,” also features the cast riding Doom Buggies and introducing television audiences to the spooky attraction.
