Tales of Ghoulish Delight at the Walt Disney Family Museum
Walt Disney first announced his plans to add a haunted house-style attraction to Disneyland in 1958, but the Haunted Mansion didn’t open until a full eleven years later. It is believed to be the last attraction Walt had a hand in before his death in 1966. But, what happened in between conception and the Mansion’s opening in 1969? Take a look at the evolution of the attraction under Walt’s tutelage from a scare-a-minute walk-through to the creepy but comical Doom Buggy ride we all know and love. Join Imagineer Kim Irvine, Walt Disney Company alum Ed Squair, and Winchester Mystery House General Manager Walter Magnuson for a discussion on Walt’s influence on this adored attraction and the three scripts developed by his original “Illusioneers”: Ken Anderson, Marc Davis and X. Atencio.

Get Free Pancakes, Give Kids The World!
This Thursday, September 22 is Give Kids The World Pancake Day at Perkins®. Which means a short stack of buttermilk pancakes will be ABSOLUTELY FREE.
So enjoy Perkins on this special day, and, with the money you save, please consider making a donation to Give Kids The World Village. You’ll leave happy — and full — knowing you’ve made someone else smile.
I’m a fan of the Village. When I was president of the Orlando, FL chapter of the NFFC, we did a lot of stuff for the kids there. I always liked that they never left the siblings out, because it could be a scary and horrific time for them, too. The Village is a really beautiful, fantastic place and I hope if you’re in the area, you’ll throw them a little support!

Descendants 2 – More #D2Deets as New Image Released
Showcasing new looks from the sequel, the image includes the teenage sons and daughters of Disney’s most infamous villains (from left to right) – Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil (Cameron Boyce), Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen (Sofia Carson), Mal, daughter of Maleficent (Dove Cameron), and Jay, son of Jafar (Booboo Stewart) – as well as Ben, King of Auradon, son of Beast and Belle (Mitchell Hope). “Descendants 2” is currently in production for a 2017 premiere on Disney Channel.
The story deepens in the music-driven sequel to the global smash hit “Descendants,” as the teenage sons and daughters of Disney’s most infamous villains — Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jay (also known as Villain Kids or VKs) — try to find their place in idyllic Auradon. When the pressure to be royally perfect becomes too much for Mal, she returns to her rotten roots on the Isle of the Lost where her archenemy Uma, the daughter of Ursula, has taken her spot as self-proclaimed queen of the run-down town. Uma, still resentful over not being selected by Ben to go to Auradon Prep with the other Villain Kids, stirs her pirate gang including Captain Hook’s son Harry and Gaston’s son Gil, to break the barrier between the Isle of the Lost and Auradon, and unleash all the villains imprisoned on the Isle, once and for all.
Kenny Ortega, “Descendants 2” director, choreographer and executive producer explains King Ben’s “Isle of the Lost” look in this image…
“When Ben realizes Mal has left Auradon, he decides to go after her. Mal’s friends — Carlos, Evie and Jay — decide to go with him to help, but first they have to teach him their wicked ways so he can sneak around the Isle of the Lost without being recognized.”
The “Descendants 2” Creative Team includes: Emmy Award-winning director Kenny Ortega (“Descendants,” “High School Musical” movies, 2016’s “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”) will return as director, executive producer and choreographer. “Descendants” executive producer Wendy Japhet (“An Education”, “The Italian Job”) also returns for the sequel. Lauded writers Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon (“The Starter Wife,” “Runaway Bride”), who won a 2016 Writers Guild Award for “Descendants,” wrote “Descendants 2” and also serve as executive producers. “Descendants” costume designer Kara Saun (“Project Runway”) and production designer Mark Hofeling (“Teen Beach Movie,” “High School Musical”) are signed on for the sequel. Tony Testa (“The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” “This Is It”) joins the creative team as choreographer with Ortega, and Shawn Williamson (“Adventures in Babysitting”) is producer.

“Jay Bangs” by Sam Gennawey is Coming this Fall!
Sam, whom you might remember from years of Samland columns on MiceChat, puts it thusly:
“I am 78 years old, Sid is 80+, Lew is dead, Jules is dead, Drabinsky is in jail, Katzenberg and Spielberg probably don’t want to be interviewed; Eisner will probably say I’m lying when he learns what I could show you. You be the judge. I’m determined to get history right. Would you like to interview me and examine my evidence as to what happened? Let me know.”
– Jay Stein
“The plot for the Jay Stein story could have been ripped from the typewriter of a Hollywood screenwriter. All the elements are there. An ambitious guy starts out in the mailroom, works hard, claws his way up the ladder, overcomes obstacles and bloodthirsty enemies to end up a mogul, and then completely revolutionize an industry. Then he disappears at the top of his game. Years later, he comes back to set the record straight.
Unlike most Hollywood stories, the Jay Stein story is true. Jay was in charge of the Universal Studios theme parks for almost 30 years and, as a result, he changed the nature of theme parks, including the Disney parks. Walt Disney may have invented the theme park, but Jay is the real “father” of the modern theme park.
Until Jay developed the Universal Studios Tours, and ultimately the other parks, most second tier theme parks were crummy ride parks with names slapped on off-the-shelf rides. In Disney’s case, there were cute, wholesome attractions, which at best were only mildly scary (in a child-friendly way), along with their versions of something out of real life (or an imagined real life that never actually existed). The Universal parks put visitors in situations that either did not exist in real life or made the experience seem actually scary or funny, with an adult edge to them; attractions with an attitude.
Jay accomplished all of this despite tight budgets, completion deadlines, often less than enthusiastic superiors, and extraordinary external opposition. He insisted on complete involvement (generally from a leadership role) in creation and design, in both the big picture and the smallest details, as well as in advertising and marketing, frequently even coming up with the basic premises of commercials. Jay demanded that his team collaborate fully with the best ideas surviving the process. Moreover, he achieved this through a sometimes cruel, impatient, demanding, hands-on supervision of subordinates. His management style caused many to leave, but he got much more to perform beyond their expectations.”
Okay, I want to read it…but it’s not available yet. It will be, later this year, on Amazon. It’s just…that title, Sam. I’m not sure if it sounds like a Ricky Martin song or something naughty.
