It’s holiday time at the Disneyland Resort and nowhere is it less evident than Tomorrowland, where Star Wars has pulled up a seat in the Cantina while it’s room is being prepared. We’re going to see the non-holiday lights, some holiday gift ideas and say goodbye to the Dirt Star. Let’s start the Kessel Run…

Tomorrowland Shines At Night

Even though the holiday decorations that radiate throughout the resort don’t have a presence in Tomorrowland, it’s still a magical experience at night. Let’s start out with a stroll through Temporary Star Wars Land.

Star Wars Land Construction

The biggest expansion ever of Disneyland is taking place in what used to be the backstage area of the park and the top of the Rivers Of America. It’s a place we refer to as Star Wars Land.

MiceChat created a graphic that shows what the area was like before, and what we expect the layout to look like when complete.

I’ll refer to the areas in the photos by the geographic location in the aerial photo and the future development in the interactive graphic.  As the walls are going up around the perimeter of Star Wars Land, I may refer to the “inner wall”, which will separate the Disneyland Railroad and SWL in contrast to the “outer wall”, which will separate the DLRR from Rivers Of America and Fantasyland. We’ll start in the north and go clockwise through the development.

In the north part of the site, closest to the N on the photo and the future site of the Millennium Falcon attraction, a feature that dominated the Disneyland Drive skyline for months is almost gone.

Earlier, dirt from the old berms and excavations created a mound that stood five stories tall. Now we can see the new backstage building and construction offices.

SWL-Dec 2 N 3

SWL-Dec 2 N 4

A lot of that dirt went to fill new berms dividing Fantasyland from SWL.

SWL-Dec 2 N 5

Just beyond that berm is where the Disneyland Railroad is being routed.

SWL-Dec 2 NE 1

SWL-Dec 2 NE 2

The new DLRR route will cross over two pedestrian tunnels. One is coming from Fantasyland.

SWL-Dec 2 NE 3

We can see some of the rockwork that will be facing toward Fantasyland.

The next set of photos is approximately the middle of the aerial photo and will include the Fantasmic Backstage.

In this area is the entrance from Frontierland.

SWL-Dec 2 SE 3

This maze of walls will come off the Rivers of American to an area where the showboats can be stored and serviced.

SWL-Dec 2 SE 4 SWL-Dec 2 SE 5

Adjacent to the dock is the new bridge for the DLRR crossing over the SWL entrance from Frontierland.

SWL-Dec 2 SE 6

SWL-Dec 2 SE 7

And we can see over the walls to the new tip of Tom Sawyers Island.

SWL-Dec 2 SE 8

From the Frontierland side, we got another look at the new bridge for the DLRR along with some interesting work being done on the pathway between Frontierland, Fantasyland and SWL.

But there was no peeking through the knotholes for a closer look this week.

SWL-Dec 2 TM 7

Moving through the park over to the Hungry Bear Restaurant, we can see some of the train path going up and the beginnings of the waterfall façade.

And here we can still peek through the knotholes to see work being done on the path from Critter Country to SWL.

Back on the SWL side, as we follow around the inner wall, the south side of the site will connect to the path from Critter Country.

That’s the Hungry Bear on the right. A new pathway is being constructed between Hungry Bear and the river, and will continue into Star Wars land.

The DLRR will come out behind the Hungry Bear before going along the River.

SWL-Dec 2 S 4

On the west side of SWL, the excavation for the Battle Escape show building is still moving out and down.
