It’s a very special Dateline Disney World this week as we take one last look at the Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios park before it closes in August. We’ll also show you what else is going on in this park as it prepares for a total transformation.

Welcome to Hollywood Studios!
Temp sign still up here.

Action!

It was announced at the D23 Expo that the Great Movie Ride will be replaced.

A new attraction, called Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will soon occupy the Chinese Theater.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy some of the final photos of this opening day MGM Studios attraction.

Singin’ in the Rain

Mary Poppins

Sad to lose the live actor element.

In space, no one can hear you scream.

Me Tarzan, you Jane.

Follow the yellow brick road!
The replacement of this attraction is very interesting. Many theme park fans these days lament the explosion of screen based attractions. Here, we are losing a ride that is very Audio Animatronic heavy in favor of mostly screens. It is an industry trend, but it seems a little sad that there wasn’t a way to update the Great Movie Ride and make it more relevant to younger generations.

Update on the now officially titled “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.”

This should block the outside world from Galaxy’s Edge, ala Diagon Alley’s London facade.

The show building for the First Order battle ride is growing every week, and is now visible from behind Muppet Vision 3D.

Nothing new to see from the ground of Toy Story Land. But, the Slinky Dog coaster has all of its track fully in place, and Disney announced at D23 that the land will open in the summer of 2018.
One more peek from the Pixar Place side of Galaxy’s Edge.
Time to head out! Cheers!

That does it for this week. Are you sad to lose the Great Movie Ride? Will you be ready for Toy Story Land in 2018 and Galaxy’s Edge in 2019? Let us know in the comments below. Thanks for reading!
