As of today, women are off the auction block at Disneyland. Pirates of the Caribbean is now closed to reimagine the “Auction scene” as a general loot auction rather than selling women off to the highest bidder.  But that’s not all that’s going on at Disneyland . . . it was Dapper Days over the weekend and that meant a well-dressed clientele in the parks as well as very crowded conditions. It was also Earth Day, which Disney acknowledged with a small display in Downtown Disney. And there are many projects from Star Wars to Dumbo going on right now. Let’s put on our cat-rim magnifying glasses and take a closer look . . .

What Am I Offered For This Winsome Wench?

No more will pirates buy “brides” at Disneyland. The ride is now closed for an undisclosed period of time. But we expect it to reopen later this spring.  We have photos from Scott Attula and video by your’s truly. It is really hard to capture images in this dark ride, but I think you’ll like these:

When the redhead returns, you won’t recognize her. She’ll be dressed as a pirate and holding a gun.

Here’s a quick video of the auction scene as it looked just before closing.

And as long as we are there . . . here are a few more bonus shots:

Star Wars Land

A little over a year from now Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open in reclaimed land at the back of Disneyland. While on Big Thunder I captured some high-resolution video of construction which I slowed down for you.  We also have some shots from around the Rivers of America of looming mountains and some Star Wars details.

Follow the tree line down to the right. See those weird towers? Let’s zoom in a bit more . . .

I braved Big Thunder to take some photos for you, here are a couple photographs of this massive new land.

Dapper Day

Thousands of folks in their best dapper duds descended on Disneyland this past weekend. It’s always fun to see guests dressed not unlike the opening day crowds in 1955.

There was an Expo set up in the Disneyland Hotel Convention Center where you could buy vintage apparel, get a haircut, or jam along with a swinging band.

If you were in the parks, it felt as though nearly half the guests were in dapper duds.

A bunch of the MiceChatters got together to have lunch and ride the Mark Twain, Tiki Room and Pirates (since it was the last day).  If you aren’t following our Sunday Fun Days group on Facebook, you should do that so you don’t miss out.

It was a little hot outside to be in a monkey suit, but I managed. Though I couldn’t wait to get home and take off the bowtie. How did folks do this every single day in the 50’s?

Did you do Dapper Day this year? Do you like these fan-organized dress-up events?

Here’s a lucky shot I got of Mickey. Took it on my iPhone – this is what the live image looked like. We love you too Mickey!

Earth Day

As if there weren’t enough things going on, it was Earth Day yesterday.  Disney set up a display of recycled art in Downtown Disney. Guests were invited to vote on which of the cast member created items were their favorites.

Splash Mountain

The good news is that Splash has reopened at long last. The bad news is that they can’t seem to keep it up and running. The attraction builds a long line and then breaks down, resulting in guests being instructed to reverse their direction in line . . . a frustration for guests and the cast members who need to deal with all those upset customers.  There are a number of issues. Sensors are automatically shutting down the attraction. The boats are also ramming each other at fairly high speed at the break zones. When you are stopped before the big drop hill and just before load/unload, it is highly likely that a boat going full speed will hit the back of your boat. It isn’t pleasant.

There are still some missing figures, poorly lit figures, and poor fox is still suspended in mid-air without his boat.  You’ll see him in the fountain scene with a paddle in his hand (his boat has been missing for years).

Additionally, while the exterior lighting is finally adjusted and looking good, some of the interior spots continue to be poorly lit.  We have a video for you below. To get you the best view, I had to take the front row, which means I and my camera got soaked. But this was an important shot . . . so here goes . . .

Some of the time it looks like this . . . .

But it’s just as likely to look like this . . .

Seats 6 and 7 aren’t being sat at the moment. That has resulted in reduced ride capacity and even longer lines.

Photos haven’t been working during our voyages. Have any of you had luck yet?

Splash is one of the all-time great Disney attractions. Every square inch if it is fully themed. It’s extraordinary . . . when it works. They’ll get this figured out eventually, let’s hope it’s soon.

Dumbo

The Dumbo erector set is coming together and it all looks quite different. There are now a series of circus tents which will shade the vastly expanded queue.  Unfortunately, the giant hedge at back has been removed  . . . which will look fine from the Dumbo side . . . but doesn’t look great from Casey Jr. . .

This is the view from Storybook Land and Casey Jr. Let’s hope they paint a cute mural on this monster wall or plant ivy or other vines which will quickly obscure it.

Together Forever Reprise

Scott returned to the park for more photos . . . and that means a few more fireworks shots for you! Last time he shot from the Hub, you can see those photos HERE. This time he’s at the opposite end of Main Street near the train station.

Unfortunately, that’s all for today. We had serious technical issues that prevented all of our images from uploading. I’m 12 hours into this update and 0 minutes of sleep – it’s time for me to go to my real work – so that has to be it for now. But we’ll be back with MUCH more from the resort a little later this week, along with all our other great MiceChat content.  See you all real soon!
