This is a very sad day for thousands of fans of Disney's Virtual Magic Kingdom (VMK) online game. Wednesday marks their final dance in a virtual world which became a way of life for many. MiceChat has been there since the beginning and was always a big part of the VMK community; we were one of the first places that the "VMK Kids" could go to discuss the game, tips, post photos of their rooms, and discuss their favorite games. We held numerous online quests and built a huge community of Disney VMK fans. We are sad not only to see VMK pass into the digital abyss, but mostly for the void that it will leave in the lives of many of our young friends for whom the game had become so important. Disney made the announcement with these few words: On May 21st, 2008 at 10PM PST, VMK will close our virtual gates for good. VMK was created and launched as part of a promotion to celebrate Disneyland's 50th Anniversary. In part due to VMK's success, the game/promotion was extended, however the time has come to end the promotion. But the future isn't a dark one. MiceChat will continue to maintain and build upon the community it has built for the "VMK Kids" and encourage them to move in new and more social directions. MiceChat has already built the foundation for communities based upon Disney's Pirates Online, Club Penguin, Toon Town Online, and many other online and digital games. And when the VMKers want to connect with their old friends, the VMK lounge will still be there, like a comfy old pair of sneakers - just waiting in the corner for someone to put them on one more time. . MiceChat reporter, DisneyTim [1], recently had the opportunity to interview Susan Murphy, a passionate supporter of Disney's Virtual Magic Kingdom (Lovingly referred to as VMK). She was an original beta tester for VMK when it launched in spring 2005 and she's been playing ever since--along with her kids. Today, she's helping lead the cause to save it (VMK is set to close forever this week). Many VMK users are up in arms about the game ending and are staging various protests, online and off, to make their voices heard. Their goal is to convince Disney to change its mind and keep VMK alive, an outcome few think is likely. There was so much of the VMK cause she wanted to talk about. Unarguably determined and sincere about representing the children, Ms. Murphy was likewise rambling, misinformed at times, and prone to hyperbole, equating VMK's online demise to that of an apocalyptic act that wiped out an entire Japanese city.
