Magic Kingdom Once Upon a Christmastime Parade Photo Tour

Each year, Walt Disney World offers one of the prime attractions from the upcharge Very Merry Christmas Party to regular day guests with no special ticket needed. This only happens in the Christmas week itself (and shortly thereafter), and the parade is run in the daytime rather than at night. My present to you this year is a photo tour of that parade, without a longer commentary from me.

Merry Weird-mas from Mousetalgia! On today’s special holiday show, we welcome three – count ‘em, three – Imagineers to the show to talk about Marvel’s upcoming “Disney Kingdoms” line of comics, which will be based on Disney theme park attractions. The first title, Seekers of the Weird, is based on Rolly Crump’s original designs for the never-realized Museum of the Weird attraction, and Imagineers Josh Shipley, Brian Crosby and Jim Clark join us to discuss the origin story behind the comic, and some of the opportunities and challenges the new story lines present as they take a deeper dive into the worlds of some of the Disney parks’ storied attractions. Also, we present our annual theoretical gifts to the Disneyland Resort – will TDA take us up on any of our ideas? Plus, Santa brings us a sack of listener mail to dig through, and we talk budget trips to the parks, Fantasmic viewing, a Haunted Mansion moment – and more!

Crowds arrive for Christmas week at Disneyland
Merry Christmas! The biggest crowds of the year will hit Disneyland starting this week, running through the New Year holiday. Guests visiting this week should be sure to plan for some of the longest wait times of the year in every corner of the parks as guests flood the parks to celebrate the end-of-year holidays at the Merriest Place on Earth. This week we give you a taste of the crowds you should expect in the parks this Christmas week and fill you in on the latest refurbishments and construction projects around the Resort.

Fascinating 1971 Walt Disney World Brochure
In a recent trove of ephemeral treasures I was bequeathed, I ran into an amazing Walt Disney World brochure from 1971. If you’ve kept up with my columns at MiceChat, then you know I’m slightly obsessed with documenting the first decade of the Vacation Kingdom of the World and also with looking at the ways that Disney promoted the new endeavor in Florida.

Disney Cast Blast: Holiday Snow Around the World
Welcome to a very Merry Christmas edition of the Disney Cast Blast. ‘Holiday Snow Around the World’ spotlights a few Christmas stories from Walt Disney World.

Disneyland Resort – Big Thunder Mountain Railings

To all who come to this happy site – welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here fans relive fond memories of the past and here youth may savor the challenge of finding a solution for Tomorrowland. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created this fan community… with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world. Today we visit the park while it’s in the thick of the holiday celebrations that it has become famous for.

Gaining and Losing Trees at the Magic Kingdom
Hello, and welcome to Dateline Disney World! This week, we’re taking a look at the Magic Kingdom, as it seems to continually be the park with the most news. Let’s go!

DCA Then & Now, Part 5: Pacific Wharf
Pacific Wharf was one of the six “districts” of the Golden State “land” when Disney’s California Adventure opened in 2001. Now Disney California Adventure has eight lands and no districts. The Pacific Wharf district and the Golden Vine Winery district were combined to become Pacific Wharf, one of those eight lands. This is part 5 of Yesterland’s DCA “then and now” series comparing the same spots in 2002 (or 2001) and 2013.

Saving Mr. Banks: A Spoon Full of Sugar

There is a moment in the new Disney film, Saving Mr. Banks, where P.L. Travers, flawlessly played by Emma Thompson, is overcome with a new musical composition hammered out by the Sherman Brothers. She begins to sing along with them while waltzing in the studio with Walt Disney himself. It is a rapturous moment of breakthrough, in which Uncle Walt seems to have finally gotten through to the old hag and has her approval at long last. As I watched the scene, I had a hard time ignoring the fact that such an event never really took place during those difficult meetings between Travers, the Sherman Brothers, and screen writer Don DaGradi. This was a lingering feeling that I had to repeatedly ignore throughout the film if I was going to simply enjoy the story being told on screen. Here’s our full review of a film everyone seems to be raving about.

My Three Favorite Christmas Activities at Disney World
I’m a Disney geek.  I’m a Christmas nerd.  Is it any surprise that I LOVE visiting Walt Disney World at Christmastime (which actually begins almost overnight after the last Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party)?!  Here are my three favorite Christmas activities at Disney World.

SAMLAND: California Living
This week is a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I will start with a brief excerpt from The Disneyland Story: The Unofficial Guide, then try and impress you with some of the reviews that I have received so far. After that I will let you know about a terrific book from a good friend and then a personal note reflecting upon my last three years here at MiceChat.

Dueling Disney: Reflections
Sometimes when you take a year out of your life to co-write a column with one of your best buds, you want to take a moment to look back on said year and reflect. Sometimes you even want to discuss some of your favorite moments with your friend, and share them with the readers who so loyally followed the column over the past twelve months. And sometimes, just sometimes, you want those moments to comprise the entirety of the second-to-last installment of the very column you’re reflecting on.
