There are creative, romantic proposals – and then there’s one that includes a Disney classic.

A Marriage Proposal Like No Other

Filmmaker Lee Loechler recently took his high school sweetheart, Dr. Sthuthi David, to a screening of her favorite movie, Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. To make the occasion a little more special, he decided to propose to her and use the film as part of the proposal. The date was meticulously planned to include a few ‘changes’ to the film that would become part of the fairy tale proposal.

“It’s not every day you get to propose to your High School sweetheart. For the past six months, I’ve been working with an illustrator to animate my girlfriend and myself into her favorite movie, Sleeping Beauty,” stated Loechler on his YouTube channel. “On December 30, 2019, I popped the question in a theater filled with our friends and family.”

The scene depicts Loechler as Prince Phillip who comes to wake Princess Aurora from an enchanted spell with love’s first kiss, who was animated to look like David. Loechler had a camera positioned at the front of the theater to capture her reaction (and the audience) when their animated selves appear on screen to set the stage for the proposal.

Loechler also shared the video on his Instagram account.

How Did He Do It?

Buzzfeed published a video in January were Loechler described the process of editing the scene in Sleeping Beauty and staging it with him catching the ring with illustrator Kayla Coombs.

“A few years back, a friend of mine told me he was planning to propose to his then-girlfriend, and I suggested he should put himself into her favorite movie, and then have his on-screen character “toss” the ring to his real-life self,” said Loechler. “I went on Instagram and started following various Disney art hashtags, hoping to find an illustrator who was up to the task.”

After finding Coombs, Loechler contacted her as a standard inquiry about doing a Disney-style portrait. He was worried that if he wrote what he was looking for in a cold email, she’d think he was nuts. On a Skype call to Coombs, he unveiled the true extent of the vision.

“Not only was she undaunted,” said Loechler, “but I remember her loving the idea and encouraging me not to compromise on the vision. She was a true collaborator from the get-go. And just an all-around warm and lovely person.”

The proposal, which included a theater filled with family and friends, came together perfectly. Congratulations to the happy couple!
