Our partners at MouseAddict have an update for us today that Disneyland fans are going to love. The app doesn’t support Android yet, but with your support, that may be on the way soon.

Since we first released Mouseaddict featuring MiceChat, the app has exploded in popularity. We thank all of our loyal Disneyland addicts for helping us create what we — of course — think of as the best Disneyland Resort app out there.

Taking our cue from the philosophy of Walt Disney, we are constantly “plussing” the app to make it more useful, more helpful, and more magical. And we’re especially proud of our latest addition, Tomorrowplan.

Tomorrowplan provides two weeks of future Disneyland crowd predictions. But what makes this feature different? We don’t just tell you how many people are in the park — we tell you how crowded it feels.

That’s an important distinction. Who knows what 40,000 guests feels like? And that number of people in Disneyland feels very different from that number of people in California Adventure.

To create our crowd projections, we look at a wide range of factors, including (but not limited to) the walkway capacity in different park areas, where queues back up into walkways, the weather, historical trends, wait times, hotel availability, attraction closures, ride throughput, and the movement of guests shown on our unparalleled crowd-sourced map overlay. (It would be fun to say “and a little bit of pixie dust,” but it’s actually Mathmagic.)

What results from all the number crunching is a projection of how busy the parks feel, rather than a raw number of bodies. Our Addictometers show you, visually, how the crowds feel — from a calm and leisurely green to an off-the-scale broken meter that warns of potentially closed turnstiles. With the easy-to-read meters, Mouseaddicts can plan their visits better, especially during this Memorial Day and the crowded summer to follow.

Our live crowd map uses anonymous crowd sourcing and information on attraction waits to create a map of traffic bottlenecks, updated constantly.     I’m not sure how this feature will work exactly. Does it work in conjunction with what various wait times are for attraction? For example, crowds may be horrendous around Rivers of America, prior to Fantasmic shows, however the wait times for Pirates and/or Haunted Mansion might be minimal. However sometimes the lines for Pirates and Haunted Mansion might be horrendous, BUT the walkway around Rivers of America may be fairly open.

      The system is intelligent — it is not reliant on any one point of data to generate its crowd map, for the very reasons you mention. Wait times are independent of the crowd map, but are also taken into account when doing calculations, because some attractions, when there is a long wait, will back up their queues into walkways. Using the example you gave above, the system would take a look at variables such as: are there people in the Pirates extended queue area as well as in the entrance area? Are people concentrated in the lower levels of the river promenade, not moving? What wait time are people reporting for Pirates? Is Fantasmic scheduled to begin in the next hour? We know where the extended queues for busy attractions are, and how they affect traffic flow in those areas. There are many more points of data that can be combined that can tell us if people are crowding for Fantasmic or for an attraction.

      Our proprietary system is patent pending, so we keep a lot of the math to ourselves.

      If it isn’t clear where the actual crowding is occurring, you can zoom pretty far into the map. In this case, you can zoom in to see where the crowd “blob” is centered. If it is centered near the entrance of Pirates but not the Fantasmic viewing area, then you know to avoid that area. If it is covering the entire riverfront, well, you are in gridlock and no app can help you! 🙂

      Last time someone asked about this Dusty said they needed more funding or programing help or some such. And now “The app doesn’t support Android yet, but with your support, that may be on the way soon.” So does this mean that more donations from visitors to the site or are you still in need of an Android app developer?

    As several others have noted, many want an Android version. And why not?

    Here’s some Mathmagic for you: 80% of phones run Android.
    iOS only accounts for 12%.

    I must admit that I don’t know how old these figures are and I don’t remember where I read them. But I DO know that I read them within the last month.

      Comscore saw it a little bit differently in March.

      To summarize what’s at the link below, Android is the OS on 52.2% of smartphones, with Apple trailing at 40.6%. After that, the others drop into single digits.

      There are an awful lot of Android handsets out there, certainly more than there are iPhones. But the ratio isn’t 7:1 like the stats you found.

      Another crucial factor that I found when taking one of my company’s products from iOS to Android is the change in customer dynamic. We had no trouble get $3.99 out of iOS customers for our product, but found our customer base on Android was substantially smaller.

      The conclusion we came to (and that others came to) was that with a large number of the most affordable smartphones running Android, you’ll find a lot of customers that aren’t as spendy on Android. iOS users have shown their pension for shelling out cash for apps and in-app purchases over and over. The Android community on the whole doesn’t spend quite as much.

      If you’re ad-supported that’s no problem. When you’re trying to repay costs by selling something that can lead to trouble.
