Today we offer a construction tour of Universal Studios Hollywood. The multiple projects going on at this park are literally transforming the face of this once humble little movie studio.  Fast and Furious: Supercharged is an attraction being added to the end of the Studio Tour.  Will it top the dancing cars on a stick that we had before?  Next up we see the progress in the center of the upper lot, as Springfield is constructed in front of The Simpsons Ride.  We noticed some hysterical additions to Super Silly Fun Land.  Then finally we top things off with a long look at the gargantuan Wizarding World of Harry Potter addition.  There’s plenty to see and a lot to visualize.  Here we go.

Fast and Furious: Supercharged

On the last leg of the world famous Studio Tour, we stop to look at the show building construction for Fast and Furious: Supercharged.  The steel framework is boxing up as the cement foundation and basement are formed.

Springfield

Inside the park, in the center of the Upper Lot area we have Springfield.  Situated in front of The Simpsons Ride the two-story facades for a variety of food locations is being constructed.  We can’t wait for a Krustyburger.

Despicable Me

If you don’t like the minions you have no soul.  Now that we have that out of the way, we see here that the Super Silly Fun Land area outside of Despicable Me Minion Mayhem has enjoyed some wonderful additions.  Set dressings mainly.  But they offer some humorous photo ops.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Finally, we get to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter construction.  The steel framework for what will soon be Hogsmeade is becoming apparent.  The oblique rooftops and leaning chimneys can be discerned from their skeletons.

  1. Thanks Norm. Great photos and info. Thanks for sharing.
Looks like the Flintstones Restaurant is doomed.

    • i was there a week ago and it was still open and didnt seem affected by the construction

    • The Flintstones restaurant, while popular, doesn’t really go with anything anymore. They used to have a few midway games that were also themed to the Flintstones movie.

    • It is doomed. Flintstones BBQ sits right in the middle of what will be the entrance archway for WWOHP.

It will be demolished as soon as Grinchmas is over.

  2. Wow! So many great projects lined up for the next 2 years! It’s really going to change the layout of the park.

  3. I’d love for the Super Silly Funland to come to Florida. It seems to be the trend towards “lands” and “zones” at all universal parks, yes?

  4. Can’t wait to visit Springfield.

  5. Hard to believe that less than a year ago the amphitheatre stood in that exact same spot.

  6. Seriously amazing how fast Universal is working. Can’t wait to see what else is in store.

  7. Being an native Californian (now living in Vegas) born in 1971, I grew up living mere miles away from Universal Studios and going there often. Heck, around 1978 I remember my day care center in Woodland Hills had a shell of an old van bus in the sandbox and I used to gather kids up and make them sit in that bus while I stood up front and played Tram Tour host ( I knew the spiel by heart ). So, I have many memories of good ole Universal, even interviewed with them straight out of Architecture School in 1997 when they were developing “Universal Escape”, later to be known as “Islands of Adventure”. The job did not materialize and all these years later I have developed my own park which I am shopping around for the Las Vegas market some day. I am thrilled that Universal is literally re-building their California property and am very happy for my “old friend” getting so many new and exciting additions. Thank you Universal for loving to entertain!

    • Haven,

Now that I’ve met you, I can honestly say I can imagine you doing that when you were a kid. Best wishes on the Vegas park.

  8. In Dispicable Me, there is a roller coaster at Super Silly Funland. It would be great if they recreated it, if they can.

    • Yeah, that would be great to have that coaster from the film. Maybe someday.

  9. So when all these projects are finished, do you think we’ll see the end of the “Buy One Day, Get The Rest Of The Year Free” promo that they do every year?
I’m hoping Universal starts stealing away the local crowds from Disneyland. Then Walt’s park came become nice and civilized.

  10. Buy a day, get a year is already a steal. The tram ride alone is worth it for a visit. The addition of Fast and Furious will make it even better. One of the cool things about the Studio Tram Tour is that they encourage you to bring food and drink on the ride and sell it right before you board. Having a beer and a bag of chips while touring the studio is something you can’t do anywhere else and is a great way to relax and be entertained.
