We love the Discover Science Center. Not too far from Disneyland on I-5, the Discovery Science Center has all kinds of great kid and family friendly ways to play with science and spend a few hours not only having fun, but sharing learning moments together. What’s really interesting about the center is their rotating exhibits that come in for a few months. MiceChat was invited to check out the new Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibition a couple of days before it opened to the public.

Read all the way through today’s article for a chance to win 4 tickets to this wonderful family attraction.

Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibition

The difference between screwing around and science is writing it down.
- Adam Savage

I’m a huge fan of the show Mythbusters. The goal of the show is to use science-based investigations to test out urban legends, Hollywood effects, and other things you think might be true. Most episodes end in something getting blown up, and it’s a great educational show for both kids and adults. I love following the wild and crazy antics of Jamie, Adam, Grant, Tori, and Kari. In their over 10 years on the air, the Mythbusters have tested over 769 myths, and have busted more than 425 of them!

Here’s a clip of their best Myths of 2013:

The exhibit is laid out exactly like an episode of the show, which I thought was really clever.

Slide3

First, you’ll pick up a mobile device to record your results as you go through the tests.

Just like the show, we start with the intro, and are welcomed by Jamie and Adam.

Next up is the blueprint room, which offers neat looks at some of the hand-drawn title cards for the show, and lots of show props.

If you like the show, I think it’s worth it to see these props hands on – they are really neat.

After we check out some of the stars clothing, it’s time to get to Mythbusting!

There are several myths offered, ones that parallel ones that have been on the show before, and a few new-to-the-exhibit.

Slide9

How long can you hang on for? I especially like that they included the Mythbusters’ times.

Slide10

On the show, Jamie also tried to pull a tablecloth off a full-size table with a motorcycle!

My personal favorite, the rain myth – asks if you should walk or run during a rainstorm to get less wet.

Slide14

There’s a full setup to try – including ‘rain’ (water with blacklight paint) – and after you run the test, you can see in a blacklight how soaked you got! I ran, and was seriously less wet than my walking partner!

Slide15

Other myths, like Airplane on a Conveyor Belt, offer hands-on testing – where you can try your hand at it yourself.

Slide11

Seeing this myth as part of the exhibit was really neat, because it was such an internet controversy when it first aired on the show.

Here’s a clip from the show about this myth:

Controls allow you to play around. Most of the myths have neat hands-on activities, great for kids and adults!

Slide12

Each myth has clips from the show, and a special intro by one of the Mythbusters, which really ties the exhibit together.

Near the end of the exhibit, there’s a neat live stage show, where you can learn about the Scientific method, and test a myth live and in-person. The show is wildly interactive, and totally perfect for a younger Mythbusters audience.

Slide16

This test involves dodging a paintball. Don’t try this at home!

Slide17

She wasn’t able to dodge the paintball until a simulated distance of 250 feet (about 1 second delay)!

As you leave, you’re encouraged to submit a myth for the show. The slips are collected, sorted, and actually sent to the Mythbusters production staff.

Slide18

At the end, you’ll find more props from the show.

I geeked out when I saw Jamie’s Jet Pack. That was a fun show!

Overall, Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibition is a solid summer offering for the Discovery Science Center. Kids and Adults will love it, and it’s especially enhanced if you are a Mythbusters fan. You can expect it to take about 90 minutes to explore all the clips, do all the experiments, and watch the stage show. There’s lots of discussion about the scientific method, and fair testing – but it’s all cleverly slipped into the fun of the exhibit. For the minimal add-on price, it’s well worth it, for just how many more hands-on experiences it will add to your Discovery Science Center visit.

The exhibit runs through September 7th.

Construction Update

If you haven’t heard, the Discovery Science Center is also undergoing a massive expansion, which will add new galleries, help them support larger exhibits, and bring more interactions to the center. For more information on the expansion, see the Discovery Science Center expansion website, where you can donate to help the cause.
