Food prices jumped at many Disneyland Resort restaurants last week, raising some entree prices as much as $2 in some cases. The price hikes come as the park enjoyed a brief off-season as it gears up for the popular Halloween Time, which begins on Friday. Meanwhile, work continue on projects including the ongoing Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage refurbishment as well as on new projects, including the removal of overflow retail space in quiet corner of New Orleans Square. Over in Disney California Adventure, Duffy the Disney Bear has packed up and sailed away as the park gets ready to welcome Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

Welcome to Disneyland!

Disney wasted no time getting to work on some off-season refurbishments following Labor Day Weekend’s end of the traditional summer season. Guests arriving to Disneyland via the Mickey and Friends tram will notice a repaving project underway at the Downtown Disney tram stop.

Courtyard Cleanup
In New Orleans Square, the Club 33 project seems pretty much done, despite some folks online insisting we need to “wait and see” because Disney is still working on it. But, the facades haven’t changed since we last ran pictures of them in this blog. The off-centered window is still off-centered and the awkwardly modified architecture down Orleans Street is still awkward with oversized windows. There is change happening, however, over on Royal Street.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

The Royal Courtyard, a small open-air courtyard between the Port Royal and Piece of Eight gift shops, has been acting as overflow retail space since 2006. The courtyard gates were closed and the space was converted into overflow retail space for Pirates of the Caribbean around the same time Jack Sparrow was added to the attraction and the Pirates mania was at its peak. The courtyard retail space effectively connected Pieces of Eight (the existing Pirates of the Caribbean shop) with the newly renamed Port Royal (previously home to Le Bat en Rouge). Le Bat en Rouge moved down the street, selling Nightmare Before Christmas and Haunted Mansion items and the new Port Royal shop sold even more Pirates merchandise. Over the years, as the Pirates of the Caribbean craze died down Port Royal began selling Nightmare Before Christmas merchandise again and is now completely a Nightmare and Haunted Mansion shop, even though the Le Bat en Rouge name didn’t follow. Le Bat en Rouge is still down the street but now sells trendy women’s fashions.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

With the demand for Pirates merchandise much lower than it was eight years ago, the pirate-themed Royal Courtyard retail space hasn’t been needed for some time but it remained in place until just last week when Courtyard retail space unexpectedly closed. By Friday, all of the retail shelving and the large cash wrap were removed along with most of the overhead shade tarps and theming.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

Hopefully this means that the Royal Courtyard will once again open up as the quiet little escape it once was, allowing for that romantic, exciting moment of discovery that the Court of Angels was once able to provide to all guests. The Royal Courtyard is much smaller and far less grand than the Court of Angels, and that’s fine. I hope Disney doesn’t misinterpret the outcry from the Court of Angels closure as a reason to redesign the Royal Courtyard to mimic the Court of Angels, as suggested by a few folks online. That sort of change wouldn’t solve any problems and would be as misguided as closing the Court of Angels was.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

The Royal Courtyard might not be as big or grand as the Court of Angels but the WED Imagineers never designed it to be. Just reopen the Royal Courtyard and let it be itself again — a quiet, hidden corner for guests to discover and explore in New Orleans Square. Below, Disney Legend Herb Ryman‘s original 1960s-era concept art for the Royal Courtyard. Beautiful and pretty close to what was actually built.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

The Royal Courtyard is located at 21 Royal Street, and the stairs lead up to what would have been Walt Disney’s private apartment in New Orleans Square. That private apartment space wasn’t finished before Walt Disney died and has been used over the years as The Disney Gallery and most recently as the Disneyland Dream Suite. It would be spectacular if Disneyland ever decided to get rid of the rarely-used Dream Suite and bring back the Disney Gallery now that it no longer has a proper home on Main Street. A move like that would rid the park of an expensive, unused hotel room to maintain, open up another high-end retail location in the park, and give more of New Orleans Square back to regular guests after the recent and highly-controversial changes in the land.

Disney’s FROZENPASS

In Fantasyland, Disneyland has implemented a new ticket reservation system for guests looking to meet Anna and Elsa. The new system is pretty much identical to Disney’s FASTPASS system, but with one big difference: there’s no standby option. Guests wanting to queue up to meet the “Frozen” stars are now required to arrive early and get a ticket with predetermined return time instead. Can’t make your return time? Too bad. Out of return tickets by the time you get to the park for the day? Sorry.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

The existing standby queue is still in place, but is now used strictly by guests returning with reservation tickets. Cast Members insist the new system is designed to have no longer than a 20 minute wait for guests in the return queue.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

If you’re looking to get a reservation ticket to meet the princesses, you’ll have to get in line and have your park ticket or Annual Passport scanned by a Cast Member.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

You get a 20-minute return window and if you miss it, then you’re out of luck. Your park ticket/Annual Passport will be scanned again when you enter the return queue.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

It’ll be interesting to see how this new system works out. It will likely be a much better process if you manage to get to the park in time to get a reservation ticket, but if you arrive too late you’ll be completely out of luck, even if you would have been willing to wait 3+ hours to meet the characters.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

Meanwhile, the temporary snow overlay for the meet-and-greet location is starting to look worse for the wear. The temporary “Tangled” overlay was removed after it started showing its age, even though Rapunzel and Flynn were still doing meet-and-greets inside — maybe it’s time to let go of the fake snow?

Done with Duffy

Meanwhile, over at California Adventure, a much less popular character has packed up and left the park. Duffy, Disney’s highly-touted merchandise character never managed to catch on in the U.S. parks like he did in Japan and has struggled to draw a crowd since his debut in 2010.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

Unfortunately for Duffy, this wasn’t his first attempt at making friends with U.S. Disney fans. He debuted at Walt Disney World simply as “The Disney Bear” in the early 2000s but failed to catch on until Tokyo Disney started selling him as “Duffy.”
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

Inside Treasures in Paradise, the amount of Duffy merchandise has been scaled back significantly.

The end of the Duffy meet-and-greet is likely to accommodate the addition of the upcoming Oswald the Lucky Rabbit meet-and-greet in the park’s budget. Oswald won’t be taking over Duffy’s spot on Paradise Pier (look for Oswald on Buena Vista Street), but the money used to operate the Duffy meet-and-greet will be used to pay for Oswald.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

Speaking of Oswald, the character will make his official debut at Disney California Adventure on Sunday, September 14 but Annual Passholders were able to catch a special sneak peek of the new walk-around character at last week’s Passholder event in DCA. He didn’t meet with guests but did make his first appearance in a special Oswald cavalcade through Hollywood Land and Carthay Circle. Thanks to our good friend @izelleba for the Oswald photo below. Nickel and Dining

Last week prices went up at many dining locations throughout the Resort. On average, Disney restaurants raised prices on entrees between 50¢ and $1. The popular Plaza Inn fried chicken and pot roast dinners are both up $2 to $15.99 and $17.49, respectively.

Bengal Barbecue skewers are up 20-30¢ each.

French Market entrees are up as well. Po’boy sandwiches jumped 30¢ each, with entree salads and house specialties rising 50¢ each.

Pepperoni pizza slices remained the same, but the vegetarian and cheese pizzas went up 50¢ per slice.

While on the topic of pizza, Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta at Disney California Adventure has discontinued their high-quality flatbread pizzas in favor of the same, disappointing traditional pizza slices sold at Disneyland’s Pizza Port. The change is a notable blow to DCA’s food line-up, as the flatbreads were one of the better quick-service options available in the park. Luckily, the better pasta options here and the excellent mediterranean skewers at Paradise Garden Grill are still available.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

The flatbread pizzas were more expensive ($8.29-9.29 per flatbread) than the slices but were larger, sharable, and seemed to be a much higher quality than the Pizza Port-style pizza slices.

High price, lower quality.

Off the Page (and other art stores in the Resort) are now selling the new Marc Davis: Walt Disney’s Renaissance Man book a bit early. The book doesn’t hit regular stores until October 7 but the upside to waiting the extra month is getting it for nearly 40% off by preordering through Amazon.

This and That

A small change, but one that has been met with praise from Disney fans on social media; the Miley Cyrus portrait has been removed from the exit corridor at Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

The Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana split portrait was often derided by fans as being tacky or simply inappropriate, given Cyrus’ public persona and behavior following the end of her career with Disney. On the other hand, the portrait was justified by Disney Imagineer Tony Baxter as being of a music icon recognizable to a younger generation.
Disneyland, Food prices go up and Halloween Time creeps in as Disneyland enjoys a brief off-season

Regardless of what you personally thought of Cyrus, she is no longer being represented as an American icon worthy of the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln post-show.

Instead, Disney filled her spot with other musical talents from the company’s past: Disney songwriters and Legends, The Sherman Brothers.
