After this coming summer, once the Disney Cruise Line sails beyond Frozen Norway, Tangled will join the Disney Magic in the Caribbean with the introduction of a new dedicated stage show in November.

Although select numbers from the animated film have been performed onboard before, this will mark the first time the entire narrative has been adapted for stage. “Tangled: The Musical” will feature beloved characters like Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Mother Gothel and Maximus the police horse, as well as hit music including three brand new songs written just for the production by Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken and Grammy Award-winning lyricist Glenn Slater.

Songs

Alan Menken, and Glenn Slater, the master songwriting duo behind the original Tangled soundtrack, worked together again to spearhead the new production, adapting the film score and story for the stage of the Disney Magic. Joining live renditions of “When Will My Life Begin,” “Mother Knows Best,” “I Have a Dream” and the Grammy Award-winning ballad, “I See the Light” will be three original tunes developed specifically for the Disney Cruise Line.

Adaptation

The production will highlight all the expert staging techniques that the Disney Cruise Line is known for: beautiful costumes, extensive puppetry and elaborate sets recreating the Bavarian kingdom from the film. A who’s who of talent behind the adaptation includes director Gordon Greenberg, choreographer Connor Gallagher, Tony Award-winning costume designer Paloma Young, set designer Bradley Kaye, and puppet designer Michael Curry, the man behind the creations of Disney’s Tony Award-winning musical “The Lion King.”

Special puppetry will bring life to Maximus on stage, whose “exaggerated demeanor,” according to the cruise line, “becomes even more hilarious with the addition of the whinnying puppet performer within.” Costumes will dazzle. Disney continues, “the townspeople’s bright hues and Rapunzel’s feminine florals are perfectly balanced by the bristly browns of the rugged thugs and royal regalia of the kingdom officials, creating a sensational fusion of colors, patterns and textures.” Lastly, sets such as Rapunzel’s tower home, the Snuggly Duckling tavern, a kingdom town and the lakeside setting of the floating lanterns scene are set to dazzle audiences of all ages.

Other Shows

“Tangled: The Musical,” of course, joins a lineup of existing live performances featured on every Disney Magic cruise like “Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story” and “Disney Dreams… An Enchanted Classic,” which, starting in summer 2015, will include a new segment from the animated hit Frozen.

Tangled will premiere onboard the Disney Magic on the ship’s November 11, 2015 four-night Bahamian sailing. For more information on the Disney Magic and these sailings, visit the Disney Cruise Line website here.
