The Source Code is a good solid sci-fi adventure mystery. I thought of it as a Groundhog's Day meets Twelve Monkeys. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the lead character which like in 12 Monkeys is sent back in time in order to piece together a puzzle to prevent a worse disaster in the future. He has to solve this puzzle in 8 minute bursts as he lives in another person reliving the last 8 minutes before a train explodes. They explain the whole concept in the movie for you (I won't try to explain how it works here) He goes through the same 8 minutes over and over again following leads and trying to determine who the bomber is. The plot is interesting as we follow the characters search for answers and the distraction that is his love interest Michele Monaghan (and distract him she does). To add an element of urgency to the story apparently his capsule that he travels in is losing air and they need to solve the puzzle quickly before the next bomb goes off.
Casting wise Jake will always just be Bubble Boy to me..I can't see how he has become a lead actor. ..(He looks sad all the time even when he isn't supposed to). Every movie I see him in I keep thinking about how it might have been a better movie if someone else was in the lead role. Someone that doesn't look like he is about to cry at any moment.
The Source Code is a good movie. It digs into some of the same issues about destiny and or fate that The Adjustment Bureau did. It is a solid 7 out of 10...I may have rated it higher if I had never seen 12 Monkeys which just did the same theme so much better.
