Quick Hits DVD Roundup Review: Episode 4 Bridesmaids 2011 6 out of 10

Bridesmaids was considered the female Hangover in that it was an R rated comedy for women that was a box office hit. It had a great cast with comedy routes....Kristen Wigg of current Saturday Night Live fame and former cast member Maya Rudolph in lead roles. Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly) was great in a supporting role --what a year she is having coming off a recent emmy win.
As were Ellie Kemper (Erin from the Office) and Wendi McLendon-Covey (Rules of Engagement and Reno 911). The movie did have some great individual moments. The plane sequence where Kristen Wigg's character has some funny scenes after taking some relaxation pills and a drink and trying to sneak into first class was really funny. As a whole the film seemed a little over hyped to me and my wife. She kept leaning over to me and saying, "It isn't as funny as people said it was". I wish this talented cast had been given funnier situations to play with. I wanted to see more of the other Bridesmaids and less of the rivalry between Kristen Wigg and Rose Bryne's characters because that has been done already in way too many so-so comedies. They get to Vegas and then because she was escorted off the plane we don't get to see Vegas. I would have loved to see this cast in some crazy adventure in Vegas. I also didn't buy the way the main character explodes at the shower is way over the top and would be something that would ruin her friendship and that just didn't feel true to me and made it hard to sympathize with the character. It is probably one of those films that you would like better if everyone else hadn't already told you how great it was supposed to be. So Hangover for women....NOT SO MUCH... but there are definitely a few good laughs here and there in this film to be had.
And I have a bone to pick with something new I just noticed recently on some DVD's. All of a sudden it seems that some studios on their rental discs have disabled the DVD extras. So now if you want to hear the director's commentary or watch the 2 minute gag reel you have to purchase the DVD......Yeah right....Thanks a lot guys.....I'm not buying the DVD just to see those extras.... but they will be missed
