Welcome to 2010! The new year is off to a quick start at the Disneyland Resort as new projects such as the return of Captain EO get underway and on-going construction projects throughout the Resort continue at full speed. Disneyland is also getting ready to celebrate its 55th Anniversary and new commemorative merchandise for the occasion is already hitting the shelves in retail locations throughout the parks. Many thanks today for the help of MiceChat's Fishbulb for lending his help with the photos in today's column.

More information and ongoing discussion on many of the various construction projects featured in today's update can be found in the Project Tracker threads on MiceChat. Simply click on a photo with a Project Tracker watermark and you'll be linked up to the latest news and discussion on the various projects underway at the Resort.

We've got a full update today, so let's get to it.

Inside Dateline Disneyland

WELCOME TO DISNEYLAND
The Disneyland Resort theme parks rang in the New Year as they typically do on Thursday night with extended park hours, midnight fireworks, and dance parties throughout both parks.

The inside of the park maps have recently been updated with new attractions and features in both parks. Disneyland's map now lists The Disneyland Story featuring Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln as a NEW! attraction. The Disney Gallery, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, and Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue are also listed as new offerings.

The California Adventure map now labels the former Golden State Amphitheatre area with its new Paradise Park name, and the new lighthouse structure has been added to the map.

PROCESSING...
Disneyland has started the new year off with hour-long waits at the Annual Passport Processing Center at the Plaza Pavilion on Main Street.

The huge demand for AP processing has necessitated the opening of a new facility in Disney's California Adventure in the former Hollywood & Dine foodservice location, which opened officially on Sunday.

David "Darkbeer" Michael noted in his January 1 In the Parks column that the new central stroller and wheelchair rental location in the Main Entrance Plaza will include a new main Annual Passport processing facility as well. The new AP, stroller, and wheelchair center is scheduled to open in February, and the two new AP processing locations will free up the Plaza Pavilion on Main Street to reopen as a dining facility once again.

CALIFORNIA CONSTRUCTION
A look at the latest progress at Disney's California Adventure's on-going $1 billion makeover and expansion.

WORLD OF COLOR & PARADISE PARK VIEWING AREA
The walkway around the new Paradise Park lighthouse structure has opened up more after the area underwent repaving work.

New planters for the area.

SILLY SYMPHONY SWINGS
There is finally come notable visible progress on the Silly Symphony Swings project.

HAPPIEST MERCH ON EARTH
Disneyland's 55th Anniversary isn't until July, but merch commemorating the milestone is already lining store shelves in both theme parks.

As new 55th Anniversary merch hits the shelves, the remaining holiday merchandise has gone on sale throughout the Resort, with select holiday offerings discounted by 50 percent.

THIS AND THAT
Honey, I Shrunk the Audience is now closed as the theatre undergoes necessary changes for the return of Captain EO, which is set to open in February.

Over at the Disneyland Hotel, half of the Dreams Tower has received the new reflective blue glass look which will continue to the rest of the Hotel towers in the coming months and years.

DISNEYLAND TESTS NEW EXPRESS TICKET LINE
The OC Register's Around Disney blog reported on a new express ticket line Disneyland is testing that allows guests to skip the ticket booths and go straight to the main gate, purchasing tickets with credit card.

New Express Ticket Line allows guests speedy access into Disneyland
A new Express Ticket Purchase entrance turnstile has opened at Disneyland, allowing guests to purchase theme park tickets right at the gate and avoid making an additional stop at the ticket booths.

Visitors simply swipe their credit card and get a ticket printed out for them at the gate.
Tickets available at the Express Ticket Purchase line are the one-day Disneyland ticket for adults ($72), children ($62) and seniors; the one-day Park Hopper ticket for adults ($97) and children ($87); and the two-day Park Hopper ticket for adults ($151) and children ($131).

BUILD-YOUR-OWN SKATEBOARD KIOSK OPENS IN DOWNTOWN DISNEY
Also from the Around Disney blog, a look at the new design-your-own skateboard kiosk in Downtown Disney:

Shoppers design custom skateboards at new Downtown Disney kiosk
The Board Factory is the latest kiosk to open at Downtown Disney, allowing shoppers to design their own skateboards.

[ . . . ]

Shoppers start by picking out the various pieces of their skateboard, including wheels, trucks, decks. [ . . . ]

Shoppers get to watch their skateboards as they are made — which takes about 10 minutes. The deck (which is the design underneath the skateboard) is placed on via heat-transfer through equipment that heats to about 280 degrees.

The skateboards cost about $70 to $85.

Funny how there isn't a "Final Performances this Weekend" sign on HISTA to tell uninformed guests that it is closing. Guess park management feels it's not worth the paint. Poor HISTA, gone without so much as a whimper, much less a bang. R.I.P. Guests would naturally ask castmembers why the theater was closing and they would be informed that Captain Eo was returning "temporarily". This would generate some buzz among the crowds already inside as opposed to just reading it somewhere else. LOVE, love, love the Dateline Disneyland articles and this installment certainly doesn't disappoint. It's exciting to see progress taking place on a daily basis. The parks (yes, even DCA) are breathing, evolving, improving places that are doing so even though there are tens of thousands of guests coming through the gates every day. I remember when you would hardly ever see a construction worker as they usually worked nights. Now you see them everywhere and that's great! I love watching the daily changes and find it very satisfying to know that the THOUSANDS of dollars I drop in that place on a yearly basis is going to park improvement and not only to line the pockets of executives. I can see improvements taking place in front of my eyes and I have no problem buying a $4.00 lemonade slushie to help cover it. I used to shy away from purchasing items in the parks because I felt the money was being siphoned off somewhere rather than on improvements. Now, I don't feel that way. I always wondered how Disney was going to make me comfortable paying outlandish prices again and this is it. My wallet opens a bit more easily when I can see where the money is going. Right now I see it being invested back into things that will benefit the guest experience and that's the way I want it.

I've seen this in photos in past updates too and I've always wondered -- Is there a good reason to keep the palm leaves tied up for a certain period of time after a palm tree is relocated? Just curious. Thanks!

It tricks the trees into establishing deeper roots. When they are planted, they have a very tiny root ball compared to their size. Limiting the amount of light which reaches the leaves generally encourages deeper root growth as the tree seeks other nutrients to sustain itself. It also helps protect the fronds from being damaged in transit.

Fantastic update today Andy and Fishy. Happy New Year and thank you for another wonderful Dateline Disneyland.

I'm not a fan of the new glass windows on the Disneyland Hotel. From a guest standpoint, having opening windows (even with faux balconies) is a huge plus. From an aesthetical standpoint, non-opening windows contribute a stark "nobody's home" look which makes this look more like an office park than a hotel.

Unfortunately, we have a recent suicide to thank for that decision. I'll miss opening the windows too, especially when staying in the bonita tower by the waterfall.

    Great update, Andy. thanks.

One question, how does Tomorrow Land Terrace close till May 4th? Do they mean just the food location or the seating area and stage as well? So no Jedi Training Academy till the 4th is basically my question.

I disagree. I always thought the yellow railings looked tacky, and the new blue glass is now instead making it look like one of those cool modern Vegas hotels.

I can always count on you to start off my week with a fail-proof, splendiferous update!

Anybody else think the new 55th merchandise is a little...overdone? I don't know - it takes me back to the 90's. Or has it always been that way? Maybe I just haven't paid much attention...
