HOTEL EMPLOYEES STAGE ONE-DAY STRIKE
As the media swarmed the Resort on Friday for the World of Color debut and "What's Next?" presentation, Disney hotel workers walked off the job in protest, prompting Disney to bring in replacements:
Disney workers declare one-day strike
Disney hotel workers declared a one-day strike after walking off their jobs Friday morning to protest a more-than-two-year contract dispute with the company.
Disney decided to replace the workers with other Disney employees for the day after the protesting employees stayed out of work for a couple of hours. Hotel employees started leaving their jobs about 8 a.m., but Disney wanted them back by 9:30 a.m.
About 11:30 a.m., a Disney official told union leaders that employees would be forbidden from returning to work.
“They can call it what they want,” said Suzi Brown, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman. “We have to keep our business running so we brought in our trained cast members (employees) to fill in.”
Tom Walsh, the union president, told employees that the union was declaring a one-day strike. Union officials planned to tell more employees, who were scheduled to work later Friday, to stay way.
“Today, we sent a very, very strong message to Disney,” Walsh said. “We told them enough is enough.”
About 200 union members and supporters from three hotels picketed outside the Grand Californian and Paradise Pier hotels. They also crossed Disneyland Drive, briefly blocking traffic.
Disney and the 2,100 hotel employees are locked in a contract fight. The workers, organized under the Unite Here Local 11 union, have organized regular protests, including a hunger strike and walkouts.
On Friday, workers who took to the streets said they were protesting Disney’s firing of a 23-year employee who also serves as a top leader in the union. The workers said it was unjustified.
“This is really just another publicity stunt,” Brown said.
