Welcome to another edition of Dateline Disneyland. Let's get to it, shall we?

WELCOME TO DISNEYLAND!
The new floral Mickey's lighting feature is now working and it is quite a nice touch.

Tinker Bell's pixie dust does the trick

...Or maybe its these little guys?

Whatever it is, it looks great.

Here are a few short video clips of the lighting effects:

SUITE SIGNS
The new railings for the stairs have been painted and the new signage for the Disneyland Dream Suite is now in place. The new signs have sparked a bit of debate on the MiceChat boards, especially regarding the Castle silhouette used in the logo design. Personally, I think the overall design, including the Castle, are far better than anything else that Disney has designed for the Year of a Million Dreams. I'm both surprised and pleased that the signs aren't covered in DreamClouds!

I think this sign may be a little much - I mean, there is already a sign on both entry staircases - is this large one necessary? I don't think so, considering this isn't an attraction that everybody can visit, unlike the Disney Gallery.

The stairs have gates to keep out guests who didn't win the prize.

New lighting for the stairs:

No lighting here, but it matches the other side of the stairs.

The balcony has also come out from behind tarps and Walt and Roy's wrought-iron initials that were once a hidden detail are now gaudy, golden, and in-your-face marketing propaganda. The exploitation of the "Walt" angle of this new Dream Suite is, in my opinion, quite tacky on Disney's part. Of course, I don't know the man, but I hardly think that Walt would have closed an attraction open to all guests only to replace it with something a very select few could visit - and then market it heavily. Even Walt's Club 33 is kept as discreet as possible.

"it's a refurb world"
The iconic "it's a small world" boat ride is now down for its highly publicized, and very lengthy refurbishment. Scheduled to re-open in late November, the construction walls have been specifically themed for the attraction so appear less intrusive during the long downtime.

TOY STORY MANIA
Work on California Adventure's upcoming Toy Story attraction presses on. The DCA map points out the boardwalk closure to guests. The area of boardwalk that is currently closed is expected to re-open March 14.

Art: Disney

The boardwalk closure is due to re-paving of the Pier surrounding Toy Story Mania as well as the construction of some semi-permanent outdoor vending locations, which will come in handy for families waiting in Toy Story Mania's long lines this summer when the attraction opens.

New floral planters surrounding the new attraction

Over near King Triton's Carousel, the pathway to the restrooms closest to the TSM! construction has re-opened, and it appears to have new cement as well. Unfortunately, the charmless and dull fountain was spared.

The section of Toy Story Mania building closest to this area contains the unload dock for the ride and an exit merchandise location.

Here's a closer look at the ride's unload area:

Details

RETRO WEAR
And finally, a new wave of retro merchandise is now on sale. The retro-style merch was first sold during Disneyland's 50th Anniversary, and the success of the line has spawned several additional waves of it since then. It definitely has more charm and heart than the Year of a Million Dreams-themed merchandise.
New Mickey and Minnie plush - $14 each

Mug - $14

Mousepad - $10

Girl's/Women's zip hoodie - $49
Front & Back

Inside hood detail:

Girl's/Women's shirt - $28

Girl's/Women's shirt - $28

Unisex hoodie - $44

Purse - $20

Shotglasses/Toothpick holders - $6

Pens - $10.95

DIRT MOUNTAIN
And finally, a look at the ever-declining state of Space Mountain. The queue is dirty and torn up, and the ride itself is very squeaky, with missing projections. The holiday crowds took their toll on the attraction, but so far, there doesn't seem like there is anything being done to clean up and fix the attraction. Hopefully there will be soon.

Filthy, scuffed floors:

Wear & Tear:

Vandalism:

Alright, that's it for this week's Dateline Disneyland. Many thanks to David "Darkbeer" Michael again this week for his always great photos. More can be viewed in his smugmug albums here: darkbeer.smugmug.com.

Until next week!

Love the Tink floral at the front of the park. Thank you for the video!

Perhaps someone from facilities will see the photos of how bad Space Mountain looks and do something about it. Let's hope that they are giving the cars and track a little more attention than they are giving the queue and effects.

Another great Dateline Andy! I loved the new signs on the Dream Suite but it is sad to remember what it replaced.

I love Space Mountain... but it's sad to think that we have to deal with vandals in the future!!!

It's not just the surface of Space Mountain that's ailing without attention of late, the cars themselves are all in dire need of attention. I've left plenty of notes for the maintenance crews at City Hall - I'm not sure if I'd do as well by smoking them or cleaning an orifice - but I've ridden it several times over the past week and all the cars need maintenance. The wheels either whir or make a loud sound throughout the ride, conspicuously audible even over the soundtrack. The cars also feel a bit sluggish at times. They're either in neglectful need of lubrication or a more extenstive degree of work. One way or another they'd better get to it quickly.

I love the update Andy and I love being able to do my pre-shopping with prices before I even get to the park. Thanks.

They need to fix Space ASAP. After spending all the money on the refurb, it would be a waste, if they let it decline again. Those Dream Suite signs are sickening. I would perfer no signage, so I don't have to think about what is up there.

This is a wonderful update! I look forward to these every week. I was most excited about the Retro Merchandise. This is by far the best merchandising (Retro) I have seen in a long time. WE LOVE IT!

Oh hooray, I'm so excited for the new retro merchandise! I was so angry with myself for not buying any of the 50th stuff when I had the chance, but I can pick up some of the new pieces (the purse in particular) when I'm there next month.

Also, to make sure I'm interpreting this correctly - to get to the entrance to Screamin', you can only currently reach it by going around the lagoon on the left-hand side of the park as you come in from the main entrance, right?

And of course, thank you for the update! I'll be there next month for the first time in more than a year and this is just fueling me up!

Thanks for pointing out the declining state of the Space ride vehicles. I agree with everything you noted, and also - the on-board audio systems are beginning to fail, too. When I took those photos of the queue - I was with a party of 5 - so we filled three rows of a ride vehicle. All of us noticed the speakers were cutting out in all of our rows.

Overall, Space Mountain is offering guests some really bad show right now.

Yes. There are directional signs that will help you out. Just remember that you'll need to pass by the Ariel's Grotto Restaurant to get to Screamin'.

Thank you so much for the video of the lighting effect. That looks really good.

I hope that leftover merchandise ends up at the outlet store in Fullerton. I have that exact same mug only in lime green that I picked up there for under $5

I really don't get it. First thing I have never been on Space Mt. and I don't intend to cause rides like that scare me. But anyways from seening though pictures of Space Mt. it is very sad. What were they doing in 2003 and 2004 when they had Space down for 2 years they could of fix the hold place. What were they doing. Seating on there ends.

Yes, but it comes with track that's too small, so it can't make any of the corners...

I'm glad to see this site back posting pictures of all the chipped paint and grime at the park. Al used to do a lot of that in the early days, but he has backed off of that lateley. Good Job!

I have to disagree with you about the railing initials. I think the gold accent looks very nice. I liked them when they were a hidden detail that few knew about. I also like them as a tribute to Walt and Roy.
