A very special friend is turning 55 years old this weekend. Happy Birthday Disneyland, you've never looked better. Today, we'll take a look at the park Walt built and see what's new. Then we'll visit with the fine folks at Knotts, Adventure City, the Orange County Fair, and find out about a slew of local events and attractions. It is a really fun update today, let's take a look.

Disneyland park is having a big week. This Saturday the Happiest Place On Earth will celebrate 55 years of magic. And as has become the custom with any momentous Disney occasion, there will be a merchandise event.

Happy 55th Birthday Disneyland!!!

The Day One Disneyland Exhibit in the Disney Gallery allows visitors to take a look back at the dreams and ideals that led to the birth of Disneyland Park. We'll take a look at the Disneyland of 1955 and compare it to today.

What began as "Walt's folly" has become the premier family theme park in the world. 55 years after her birth, Disneyland is without a doubt the best looking 55 year old around. A place of true magic. Though individual executives have come and gone, attractions built, replaced, and rebuilt again. Though time has forced a thousand sand blastings, color scheme changes, and repairs . . . nothing can quite compare to a quite morning, an exciting afternoon, and a dazzling evening at the Happiest Place On Earth!

Disney has largely missed the opportunity to celebrate this nostalgic milestone in history; however, you can expect a few birthday nods at Disneyland this Saturday, July 17, 2010:

  • Special edition park maps based upon the Dumbo attraction poster.
  • Commemorative 55th Anniversary cakes at select restaurants.
  • Dedication ceremony will take place in Town Square at noon.
  • Sing Happy Birthday to Disneyland at 4:15 pm
  • 55th Anniversary Art & Collectible merchandise event with artists Dave Avanzino, Jody Daily, Kevin Kidney and Noah at The Disney Gallery from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
  • Special event at Disney Vault 28 from 2 – 4 pm.
  • Special Mickey Mouse Ear Hat featuring premium embroidery that reads “D 55th,” July 17, 2010, available exclusively on July 17.
  • Select merchandise locations will offer 55th Anniversary candy packaging and cupcakes with the 55th Anniversary logo.
  • The Candy Palace on Main Street will offer a 55th Anniversary Bandleader Mickey candy apple.
  • And MiceChatter, Englishpauliewalle, suggests that there may be a little "Planned" flash mob by disney cast members
At approx 4pm when the cast gathers to sing happy birthday to DLR a Disney Themed flashmob will occur with 500 strategically placed cast members and 55 characters (55 obviously being the theme!!)
You can read more about this rumor here: Disneyland 55th Anniversary Surprise- are you excited??

To all that come to this happy place, welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America... with hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.
— Walt Disney

And that it has Mr. Disney, for 55 years, and with the right stewards, Disneyland will still be delighting crowds 55 years from now.

All Star Parade:
Earlier in the week Disneyland hosted an All-Star Baseball Celebration with a parade down Main Street and Interviews in Town Square.

Big Thunder Trail:

Some more work is being done along Big Thunder Trail

Disneyland may be the guest of honor today, but the exciting action is at California Adventure. These shots of Cars Land and Little Mermaid construction are nothing short of exciting (even if they only change by small degrees from week to week)

Carsland:

The mesh for the future rock-work is clearly visible

Think of that tent as a temporary garage

That's some pit being dug there

The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure
Ariel's house is quickly being enclosed, soon the exterior will be nearly complete while the real magic is installed inside.

One thing these photos really show is how green this little section of the park have become this year. Lots of trees now provide all sorts of shade near Paradise Park.

Paradise Pier Food Court:

We are still waiting for this burger to take off

Red Car Trolley:
The final big project in DCA is the new Red Car line which will run from the front gate to the Tower of Terror.

We have a small Knott’s Berry Farm update for you today as well.
If you are looking for some funky fun, you might try the biggest Filipino-American Gathering on the West Coast, which will be taking place this Saturday at Knott's. It promises to be a lot of fun.

Kababayan Fest, the West Coast’s biggest annual Filipino-American gathering, returns to Knott’s Berry Farm on Saturday, July 17. Since its inception in 2008, Kababayan has seen tremendous success, with this year’s festival promising to be the largest yet.

For the first time, Kababayan Fest is teaming up with GMA Networks, the number one Filipino network, to bring in some of the biggest names on Filipino television today.

“We are so excited about our partnership with GMA,” said Kababayan event producer, Ryan Monsanto. “Kababayan Fest is like a bridge. Nowhere else will you find the best in Filipino entertainment mixed with the very best America has to offer. This year’s event will be unlike anything ever seen in the Filipino American community.”

Confirmed headliners include America’s Best Dance Crew’s Season 4 Winners – We Are Heroes and Season 5 Winners-Poreotics, GMA artists Steven Silva, Jackie Rice, Kris Bernal, Aljur Abrenica and Carla Abellana. Other local artists include AJ Rafael, Rocky Rock, and Kultura Philippine Folk Art. The event will be hosted by Joey Guila and Giselle Tongi.

And as long as you are at the park, don't forget to stop by and see Snoopy's new ice show in the Roarin' 20's section at the back of the park. It really is a lot of fun.

A banner above Ghost Town's arch reminds people of the great ice show going on now through the end of August

It's actually a pretty good show! We recommend seeing it.

But we have a bit of bad news from the Timber Mountain Log Ride.

Last week, we reported that a light had been installed before the first big drop in the dark. Now, it is no longer a surprise and really takes something special away from this otherwise great ride.

We sincerely hope that Knott's will reconsider or that one of the smarter cast members will unscrew the bulb.

Around Knott's:

The mine ride offers the park's lighting designers a lot of opportunity to play with color.

Impressive after all these years

This year's MiceChat Haunt meets will be more fun than ever. Knott's Berry farm is very generously working with MiceChat to deliver the best, most horrifying, nights of gruesome pleasure possible to haunt goers. An often overlooked local attraction is Adventure City. Located between Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, Adventure City is a little park for little tykes with a total of 17 rides and attractions; including the Childrens Theater, Game Room, Petting Farm, Rock Climbing Wall and much more.

Adventure City will be celebrating it's 16th anniversary this summer. The park is uniquely geared for the toddler aged child, with rides and attractions that are suited for children who are normally too small to enjoy rides at other theme parks. All of the rides are still built for the whole family to enjoy.

The facility is joined to the premises of the Hobbie City collectors shops which are independently operated and the White House Event Center; established in 1955.

Admission is just $13.95 per person and parking is free. This is the perfect spot for a child's birthday party. There has been some talk in the past about this park closing and the land being redeveloped. The economy may have placed those plans on hold, but if you've never been to this unique little park, now might be a good time to visit.

Most of the attractions in the park have a 42" minimum height restriction

The BIG question on everybody's mind, I'm sure, is WHAT WILL THEY SERVE FRIED THIS YEAR????? Look no further, because we've got the heart stopping news.

DEEP FRIED BUTTER

The Heart attack Cafe, located near the live stock section of the Fair, is pushing the boundaries of good taste with it's 2010 offering, Fried Butter. How the heck do they do it? Well, think of it as a churro stuffed with butter and deep fried. But don't worry, for the less adventurous of heart, there is chocolate covered bacon and deep fried Bunuelos.

The world's largest grill offers healthier fare.

Al's Brain 3D attraction is returning this year with new surprises

Carnival Section:

The Carnival section returns with an array of dark rides and flat rides to be enjoyed by all. There are even a few coasters in the mix.

The Himiler

Crazy Coaster

The Zipper

Then of course there is

Le Grande Wheel (One of the The largest portable
Ferris wheels in the world)

Don't forget the games

Centennial Barn:

What's that baby girl . . . you say you'd like some fried butter???

Centennial Barn area is filled with gardens, vegetables, and lots of cute farm animals

Fancy chicken coops, filled with fancy chickens of course

Shopping around every corner:

Family Ride area:

There are actually two carnival sections of the fair, the wilder side which we showed you above and the tamer family section on the other side of the fair.

Taco Bell is now open at CityFood while Johnny Rockets is still under construction down the way.

The OC Fair is always fun. Enjoy the musical stylings of Boston, Journey, UFO and Whitesnake blasting throughout the carnival rides.

We are just giving them a little ribbing for their decision to install a light before the old surprise drop in the dark on the log ride.

It wasn't really very "Naughty" but it rhymed with Knott's so it worked for the title. What can I say, it was late, I was tired, and it sounded good at the time.

LOL. The ice show isn't really in Ghost Town, but they put the banner there because that is the direction most people enter the park. Sadly the Roaring 20's section of the park is sort of dead now but that is where the theater is located.

Why did I know that the fried butter would be the hit of today's update LOL

Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to keep fried butter on a stick. Much easier to eat if they just pour it into a funnel or inject it directly into your veins.

Happy 55th, DL! Wish I could be there to celebrate with you!

Oh, and if you go to the OC Fair, you might want to avoid the "Ghost Pirates" ride pictured above. We had something similar at the big Puyallup Fair in Washington state (pictured below). I actually ponied up the dough (about $4.50, if I remember right) for what turned out to be about 30 seconds in the dark with absolutely nothing happening! But, hey, I'm a sucker for cool graphics like this:

If you care to see my other pictures from Washington's biggest fair, they're at this link.

Looks like it will be fun this year, at DL, at Knott's, at Adventure City, at the OC Fair and Everywhere!

Great update! Thanks for including something about Adventure City. My wife and I took our kids there back in 2004 and I was very impressed by the place. Our children were 4 and 8 back then and they had a lot of fun. I actually enjoyed Adventure City myself far more than I expected to. It was a nice "side order" to our Disneyland vacation that year. If you have young children I definitely recommend checking out Adventure City.
