Happy Birthday Weekend Update: Disneyland, Disney World, Tokyo Disney, Whistler, BC
by, 02-20-2009 at 11:11 PM
Weekend Update is celebrating one year of columns today. While I haven't been the editor since day one, I have been a reader since the beginning. I never grow tired of grabbing a cup of coffee on Saturday morning and taking a vicarious trip around the world, courtesy of our great MiceChat crew.
This week we have a bunch of Disney park reports. Fishbulb shares a great set of Disneyland photos, some of them taken at night and in the rain. It's always fun to see photos of the park without many guests – an all too rare sight these days.
TDLFAN is back with photos of the Tokyo Disney Resort supplemented with photos from MiceChatter lighttragic. Denise nbodyhome Preskitt brings us some photos from Walt Disney World including shots of the new Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! Street Party.
Put your long johns on for our next segment. CaptPhoebus shares photos of his ski week in Whistler, British Columbia. Then we take a trip back in time to the Disneyland of yore, courtesy of darkfairycthulu's vintage postcard images.
This week we'll start out with Fishbulb's images from Disneyland:

MiceChatter CaptPhoebus is on a fantastic vacation that includes a ski week in Whistler, British Columbia and then he's going on to London and Paris. Here are a few photos from his ski trip.
Whistler, British Columbia
Whistler is a Canadian resort town in the southern Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains in the province of British Columbia, Canada, approximately 78 miles north of Vancouver. Incorporated as the Resort Municipality of Whistler, it has a permanent population of approximately 9,965, plus a larger but rotating "transient" population of workers, typically younger people from beyond BC, notably from Australia and Japan.
Over two million people visit Whistler annually, primarily for alpine skiing and mountain biking at Whistler-Blackcomb. Its pedestrian village has won numerous design awards and Whistler has been voted among the top destinations in North America by major ski magazines since the mid-1990s. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, Whistler will host most of the alpine, nordic and sliding events.
Whistler Blackcomb, a mountain resort already renowned for daring innovation, has announced its boldest move yet with the construction of the Peak to Peak Gondola, for completion December 2008. The two mountains will be united by a gondola that will set world records for length and height while providing an unmatched experience for winter and summer resort guests.
The PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola will travel 4.4 kilometres in just 11 minutes, transporting winter and summer guests from Whistler’s Roundhouse Lodge to the Rendezvous Lodge on Blackcomb Mountain, giving them unprecedented access to both mountains’ expansive and unique high alpine terrain and spectacular vistas.
“The PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola will create a dramatically enhanced experience that no other mountain resort in North America, possibly the world, can offer,” says Dave Brownlie, Whistler Blackcomb’s Chief Operating Officer. “This link will effectively double, or more, the options for accessing the highest quality and greatest variety of terrain on any one day, from anywhere on the mountains. We are going to completely revolutionize our guests’ experience.”
We'll have some more photos from CaptPhoebus next week.
