A new parade launched at Disneyland today.  Join us as Fishbulb shares his photos and thoughts of the bare-bones “CELEBRATE: A Street Party”

Think Pardi Gras and Block Party Bash and you have the new Celebrate Parade that premiered today at the Disneyland Resort.

The much debated Town Square centerpiece at Disneyland becomes the focal point of four separate floats carrying Amazingly high energy performers who do everything they can to get you in the mood to celebrate.

Conga conga conga

The parade features the usual smattering of musical pablum that would appeal to the masses; “The Twist”, “The cup of Life”, and an awkward “I love Rock and Roll”. The parade culminates in a cover of “You can’t stop the beat from the hit musical “Hairspray”. I don’t really know what any of these songe had to do with anything other than they sounded fun.

Obligatory confetti cannons

The energy is through the roof and the performers, once again, cannot be faulted. In fact they can be held responsible for this parade not being a total failure. By reducing the floats to practically nothing the perfiomers are left to make up the difference and really wow the crowd. The show stops even feature guest interaction such as doing the twist and joining a conga line.

That was our view of the new parade.  What where your thoughts?

It looks really fun! I can’t wait to see it! My expectations look like they will be met! But no Princesses??? :(

  2. JoeCool

Thanks for the report. The “Parade” is not a parade with 4 floats…Looks very disappointing. I was expecting more.

  3. Mommyto4

4 floats? I did not care for block party bash, I think I will be on rides during this parade

  4. andyjean

look better than I thought, i think they should put more charecter!

  5. princedalton

4 floats? I thought it was going to have 7? Oh well, I think it still looks like fun…but like I said, I wish there were more characters…though I’m happy Mary, Bert, Peter and Wendy are in it. It also looks like the Mad Hatter and Alice are in it too. I’m not going to really jugde until I see it in person :)

  6. WheresMickey

It look okay, but have to see it in person to really decide. Thanks Fishy!

  7. Walt Jr.

I can see this as sharing the street with PoD for the Summer.

  8. DISNEYLOVER2009

LOVING IT CAN’T WAIT TO SEE IT !!!!!

  9. aussiedave

looks like it leaves much to be desired, but i’ll reserve judgement until i see it in person

Seems like a fun time and very colorful show, like the “Celebrate it” street show at WDW. Not a step up from the PoD but you can only get as much satisfaction from this parade as you are willing to put into it with participation.

Thanks for the getting this report and photos up so quickly Fishy! I’m looking forward to seeing it myself this weekend. While I think I’ll enjoy it (I loved BPB), I know it’s not a real parade and hope we get a full parade back at DL.

In fact, it’d be nice to have BOTH this street party and a parade operating during peak seasons…kind of like how there is the Move It, Shake It… streetacular *and* Celebrate A Dream Come True Parade at the MK. Of course in this economy, I understand that’s probably more wishful thinking than anything else. *sigh*

From someone who remembers such fabulous productions Disneyland used to stage such as the Lion King Parade, the Mulan Parade, even as far back as The World According To Goofy Parade, and the not-a-parade, Festival Of Fools Cavalcade, this new “parade” looks really done on the cheap and massively disappointing. There also is the fact that I didn’t like Block Party Bash much, but even BPB looked infinitely better to me than what I’m seeing here.

Haven’t seen the new parade in person yet, so I guess I have to wait to really make up my mind about it, don’t have high hopes though.

Looking forward to seeing a video, only because the pictures make the floats look among the worst in DL history (and they do look like they have been thrown together at the last moment) and the costuming is just as disappointing.

If they are going to do “just can’t stop the beat” they should have just done a mini performance of Hairspray on Main Street.

It’s good to see that they are using some happy peppy music with this new “streetacular”, but why can’t they do that with some disney songs? They always have to mess up a good parade with Mushy music. They really need to have upbeat Disney Music with Great floats. instead of having sappy music with great floats.

If you are willing to let go of your expectations of a “parade” then this seems enjoyable. I like the colors I really like the costuming, and the music is quite fitting. Even the characters are nice dancers in this parade! The finale doesn’t seem quite as energetic as some other parts of the show but I still look forward to seeing this. Is it better than Parade of Dreams, no but PoD was here for 3 years, this one will be here for a fraction of that time, 7 months. It is a nice cute addition for a 7 month period and it seems like Disney got the best for what there circumstances were.

My god, even the parades of the 70’s seemed better. The credit crunch is really impacting. Well I made the right choice cancelling our trip to DL this year and opting for 3 trips in Europe instead.

    Nothing to see here…

  16. I agree with those who say that if you are willing to suspend expectation of a “Parade” this “Street Party” wouldn’t be quite so craptacular. However, Disneyland guests expect a parade. And with no parade running, this street performance IS the current parade.

Average tourists won’t understand why this parade is so crappy. And to almost everyone, it will seem like Disney cut corners because the economy is bad or quite simple because they decided to cheap out on their guests.

Prices at the park are higher than ever, this sort of cheapness just doesn’t sit well with me. But that’s just my opinion.

…I just watched the parade on youtube. I feel physically ill…i was really wanting to give it a chance…but…it was just so…block party/Chuck E Cheesey!

  18. mrpiggyandjane

    … But it’s not a parade, it’s a street party! and there’s confetti!
First: I think if the princess weren’t in the street party it would make no sense, and other Disney fans would be complaining that the princesses don’t belong there. Although it would be fun seeing the princesses dancing.
Second: You know, it’s these guys’ first performance with this street party, you have to give them some slack. From the video I watched, all of them looked pretty hyper and exicited
Third: I agree but lots of kids like Miley and Disney wants to grab the audience’s attention. At least she’s not singing it right? and Disney wanted fun, upbeat music for this street party.
Fourth: Boo for interaction? One of the main points of the street party is that the crowd could get involved.

I wish they stuck with Parade of Dreams, but it doesn’t fit in with the Celebrate! theme. It would be better if they just changed the music and some decoration on PoD and called it Parade of Celebrations, but then more complaints would arise (and we would be copying WDW lol). And after all, this street party will only be here for the rest of the year. We’ll be getting an acutal parade for Disneyland’s 55th :)
But really, PoD and Celebrate! are completely different so it’s best not to compare them both.
Plus, if you look at WDW’s Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! Street Party to ours, ours is much better. Just saying =/
    Long post is long.

Your pictures are beautiful, but the parade looks stupid. So, prices are going up on food, they are closing restaurants, raising prices in their hotels, several stores closed in Downtown Disney and now skimping on the parade? With things as bad as they are in the economy, you would think Disneyland would stay “the Happiest Place On Earth”. As far as I can tell, crowds are as large as ever, yet Disney is skimping wherever they think people won’t notice or care. So sad. As someone who loves going to the parks and even though we (my husbnd and I) live 5 hours away, we come 4 to 5 times a year. We love being together and choose to enjoy the Disney Magic. The last couple of visits have been really disappointing. From the strange people hanging around the street trying to sell you things, to California Adventure being so tore up, you can’t even sit and look at any aspect of the park and enjoy. Walking down the corridor from The Grand Californian to Downtown Disney Goofy’s ear has been broken (gone) for months. It use to go up and down. Now he just has his hand there as if it hurts…..What’s up with all of this? I guss it has nothing to do with the parade, but seeing the pictures from the link posted on twitter I just had to say something. Maybe someone who cares listens. What happened to the glory days when there was not a speck of trash in the parks and every event was a big deal not because it was new but because it was DISNEY? Oh well, maybe those days are just over and we should let it go the way of Magic Mountain. I for one am so sad about all the recent happenings at Disney.

I do thank you for the great pictures.

  20. DCAfanatic

I agree With PLP’s Points, I was too also Utterly dissapointed ,I guess it’s because I always expect a “WOW” from Disney

  21. Skoolboiedd

i was there friday! cant wait to share my very first trip report with pics! haha, and the new street party may not be as good as the parade of dreams but it was nice in my opinion.

  22. dgpollard

I like the “Celebrating” theme idea for this parade/street show. But I think that it needs to be “plussed” as Walt would say. I mean putting Mickey mouse in some hip hop garb is not a good idea. If this show is to represent and inspire people to celebrate and be in a happy mood, then the classic Disney characters need to show a celebration that relates to what they have celbrated in their films, etc. If people want hip hop garb then they can get that in the car in their own time, but in Disneyland, the clelbrating should inspire our imaginations and not immitate some pathetic “back in the hood in east L.A.” crap. How far is The Walt Disney Company invested in this cheap excuse for a parade experiance in the park that Walt built anyway?

  23. Radiobarry

Talking about the parades of the 70’s, this thing appears to make “America On Parade” shine by comparison.

And even with the state of the economy, that argument is going to be a tough sell to guests who see nothing but exorbitant prices and a packed park.

Having said that, thanks for the report Fishbulb.

I only hope this thing looks at least a little better in person.

  24. DiznieGyrl

Okay, I just watched this mess on YouTube, and I’ve got to say that I am thoroughly disappointed. The costumes, the “floats”, the music…this is NOT Disney caliber. I felt physically ill as I watched Mary Poppins shaking her tail to Ricky Martin. What is that all about? This is the kind of show that one would expect to find at a rinky-dink small amusement park…not a Disney theme park!

And to replace the spectacular, POD with this pathetic excuse for a parade? It’s in the same style as Block Party, but at least Block Party had very intricate, interesting floats and fun costumes. These floats look like plastic toys, and the costumes look like very cheap cruise line cabaret rejects. Someone compared it to “Party Gras”, but I must disagree—Party Gras leaps and bounds better than this. In fact, all the parades I’ve seen at Disneyland have been better than this tragedy.

This is a Grade A, Level 5 Disney-Flop of “Light Magic” caliber.

**Please note–the performers have done their darndest to help make this more entertaining. It’s not their fault that they have pathetic material to work with. So please don’t be offended if you or anyone you know is in this parade.
