First:
I will be a nurse. A RN. I will finish my BA in lib arts, get my BSN, and kick butt...

But... right now I'm frustrated. About a month ago I went to see a counselor for the community college near me. I went in with "Yay I did all the pre-reqs required for me to start a LVN program in CA! I'm going to make a great nurse!" and came out feeling totally discouraged. The counselor asked me if I really wanted to become a nurse (which I do), why (because nursing is an honorable profession, makes good money, and oh yeah it totally takes advantage of all my personality quirks-ie love of abbreviations, love of the bowels and anything "cool," the "hunch" feeling, and helping people), had I done anything aside from my CNA clinical hours (explained that situation.), and then made me feel like crap. She didn't think it was the right profession for me. I talked to her for all of 10 minutes when she said this. And then all the pre-req work I did apparently NONE of it counts. So I have to take all these other classes (the classes they require people who want to get into a RN program in So Cal to take) to get into a LPN program. So I left really frustrated and dragging my feet. I even went to other community colleges in the area and while they weren't totally negative as much as the first school... I'm just. I hate community college stuff. I liked the Adult School programs because they were smaller you felt like someone has your back. Seriously when I graduated my CNA program the principal congratulated me for getting high honors. If you needed help there was help. I hate community colleges because it's just not that way.

Anyhoo I did what I needed to do. Knock on wood I get into a chem class. It's just frustrating. And counselors should be the school's cheerleaders not...

Don't you just wish for a bit of a slowdown?

In honor of that, I thought I'd post a few photos of Epcot during some less hectic days.

The photos above show Future World around 11:00am. Every attraction's queue was empty with the exception of Soarin'. In fact, after arriving at opening time and departing at closing shortly after Illuminations, I was able to experience every attraction in the park at least once. That included Soarin' twice, Test Track three times, and Gran Fiesta twice.

As you can tell, there were very few folks in the park, making for an odd day. Why odd? On the plus side, it was great experiencing everything at a leisurely pace. Very similar to our first visit in 1983. This made the day feel like a step backward in time. Negatively, there was a certain level of excitement missing due to the lack of people. The energy level was very low, and the audience response to the highlights of the individual attractions minimal at best.
These World Showcase photos were taken between the hours of 2:00pm and 5:00pm, which should have been the peak time for crowds. Pretty amazing, huh? Even more amazing is the fact these shots were taken the last week of August. Nice weather, small crowds, no lines, and late hours. Just like the Disney World of old.

This is officially Turkey Recovery Weekend but some of you will try to shake off your tryptophan-induced stupor and enjoy the holiday festivities at a Disney park. For all of the rest of us, we have coverage of the parks on both U.S. coasts this week. Denise nbodyhome Preskitt and SummerInFL share great WDW updates, MickeyMaxx contributes a photo essay about the Universal parks in Orlando and sir clinksalot shows us some Disneyland photos. Andy Castro has a great Dateline Disneyland this week. If you haven't seen it yet, I have a link later in the Update. I am a great paper ephemera fan and I'm pleased to present some more vintage postcard images courtesy of darkfairycthulu.

First up we have news of a new tourist attraction in Florida. The Great Orlando Wheel Corporation is planning to build a 400 foot high observation wheel in the heart of Orlando, adjacent to the Orange County (FL) Convention Center.
The Great Orlando Wheel represents a breathtaking new vision for North America. Rising 400 feet above the earth, this iconic structure will offer ever-changing views above one of the country’s top tourism destinations. It is scheduled to open in 2010.

A 25-mile panoramic view will showcase world-class Central Florida attractions like SeaWorld, Universal Studios and Walt Disney World, as well as firework displays and rocket launches from NASA Kennedy Space Center. With integrated commercial and retail facilities, The Great Orlando Wheel will provide a grand welcome to this vibrant destination and an ideal gathering place for visitors to shop, enjoy and play.

Ideally situated in the heart of Orlando, Florida, the Wheel is conveniently located to nearby attractions including, SeaWorld, Universal Studios, Walt Disney World Resort and bustling Downtown Orlando. Additionally, the Orlando-Orange County Convention Center and International Drive, Central Florida’s main tourist corridor, are adjacent to the site.

From the official press release:

Take a panoramic ride atop the Great Orlando Wheel. This new international icon will tower 400 feet, treating passengers to spectacular views that stretch 25 miles in all directions.

“The Great Orlando Wheel will transform the skyline and tourism for Central Florida,” says Florian Bollen, Chairman of the Great Wheel Corporation, the project’s developer and operator. “Passengers will witness breathtaking views of the region’s dynamic cityscape, homes, roads and thriving tourism corridor.”

“This iconic attraction will cast a stately silhouette,” Bollen continues. “In the future, it will be difficult to imagine a postcard of the Central Florida skyline that does not include the Great Orlando Wheel.”

The experience begins at the giant terminal that draws its design inspiration from the Great Orlando Wheel. Massive arcs will mimic the wheel’s movement, while the dramatic glass and steel construction will add to the overall impact of the design. Visitors will see the wheel and feel its presence wherever they are in the terminal.

“The terminal will showcase every feature of the Wheel, from its enormous legs cutting into the building to the large flight capsules moving gently across a glass background,” explains Jim Ritchie, Project Manager for the Orlando office of Morris Architects who are the international firm responsible for the terminal’s inspired architectural, interior and landscape designs.

“Bringing the Wheel into the terminal will allow spectacular views of its structure, setting the tone for the architecture and design,” Ritchie says.

Spanning 80,848 square feet, the multi-level terminal will include an indoor space of 61,125 square feet plus outdoor covered plazas. The terminals shape will look like a giant infinity sign, with two curved buildings surrounding the Great Orlando Wheel at the center. One structure will be the arrival building, and the other will house the passenger lobby. An arced glass corridor will connect the two buildings, allowing traffic to flow smoothly from arrival to the boarding area.

The terminal’s breakthrough design calls for a Wheel-inspired roofline, convex for the arrival building and concave for the passenger lobby. Soaring ceilings and a giant atrium will engage visitors immediately at the entrance, giving them a view of the Wheel before boarding for their flight. Adding to the impact will be the terminal’s minimalist design, with polished concrete floors, glass walls and a few massive columns dispersed in clean, open spaces. The terminal will invite visitors to walk around and explore, putting them within inches of the giant revolving wheel, separated only by panes of glass.

Sweeping walkways and glass corridors will bring guests from the arrival building to the passenger lounge. Tilting gently outward, the glass walls will draw attention upward, allowing views of the Wheel from all angles. Walkways will build visual momentum and then open onto a grandiose space with 40-foot ceilings in the passenger lounge. There will be no waiting in long lines for this 360-degree flight. The passenger lounge will house unique restaurants, cafes, a bar and boutique shops.

Overlooking the terminal atrium the mezzanine will feature an expansive terrace located directly beneath the enormous, revolving Wheel. Guests will sip drinks and dine al fresco, while taking in spectacular views of the Wheel before stepping onto the boarding platform for liftoff.

The Great Orlando Wheel will turn slowly, enabling passengers to board without the Wheel stopping. They will take this journey of discovery from the comfort of fully enclosed, glass flight capsules. Twenty-four of these climate-controlled, rotating capsules will be affixed to the Wheel’s outer rim to provide unobstructed views.

Measuring 38 by 16 feet, each capsule will be larger than many living rooms and will accommodate up to 40 people. Capsules will be reserved for individuals as well as for business meetings, birthdays, weddings and other special occasions. For passenger entertainment, each capsule will have its own audio and video system.

Traveling at a leisurely nine inches per second, the wheel will take 30 minutes to make a full rotation. Each capsule will turn 360 degrees in one direction, while the rim will rotate a full revolution in the other to keep the floors horizontal. Passengers will move freely about the glass cabins or relax in a central seating area. Either way, they will enjoy unsurpassed views of the ever-changing landscape.

“To travel on such a wheel is a wonderful experience because you’re very slowly being moved out of your daily life,” Bollen explains. “You have constantly changing perspectives until you finally reach the top of the world. That is the kind of feeling you will get when you’re standing in this capsule and have an uninterrupted, 360-degree overview of the city.”

Passengers will take in all of Central Florida, from its sparkling lakes, labyrinth of roads and bustling downtown business district to luxury resorts, attractions and world-leading theme parks. The Great Orlando Wheel will provide unique vantage points for watching launches from NASA Kennedy Space Center. During evening flights, subtle changes in the wheel’s lighting will create an ever-changing ambience. Guests will enjoy unrivalled views of bright city lights and firework displays lighting up the sky.

Providing the feeling of being on top of the world, the Great Orlando Wheel will reach out to locals and travelers far and wide and showcase one of the world’s premier tourist destinations from a completely new perspective.
MickeyMaxx treats us to a photo essay on the the signs of Universal Studios in Orlando.

Universal Studios Resort
Orlando, Florida

Nearly every visit we've made to Orlando has included not only all the Disney parks but the Universal parks, too. Over the years we've come to appreciate their attention to detail that rivals Disney's in so many instances. One of my favorite things is the creativity that goes into the signs in these two parks. Always beautifully executed and completely unique, each one does an excellent job of doing what a sign should do. They catch your eye, they tell you what you need to know, and often they entice you to enter the establishment or attraction.

The sign experience begins while you are on the moving sidewalks that take you from your parking space to the parks. They continue through the CityWalk shopping area.

Once inside Islands of Adventure, there is no question that much of the theming is set through the use of signs and architecture.

Shops are signed for maximum sales to a hungry public. Note the sign outside this candy shop.

Next door at the Studios park, there is some wonderful atmosphere created in the different themed neighborhoods. I'm especially fond of the New York section which has some signs which for some reason I'm attracted to.

And, in what was one of the most delightful surprises to explore, a detailed alley exists . . . just because. No shops, no pitch to buy, just a place for guests to take in the talents of the Universal creative folks.

The AP billboard at the security checkpoint has gotten an AP ad to match the holiday marketing campaign.

New park maps

The inside flap of the map lists the major holiday attractions at Disneyland (nothing is going on at California Adventure) and teases the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough.

It's definitely the holidays inside Disneyland.

The Sleeping Beauty's Winter Castle overlay has gotten plussed this year, with new "ice" finials, and an extended lighting package on the back of the Castle.

Last year, the back of the Castle looked incomplete and the missing areas of snow and lights broke any effective illusion of magical snowfall that Disney was attempting to create. The new snowdrifts on the back of the Castle and the extended lighting effects really make the overall product work better. Hopefully next year a better solution for the icicles can be implemented, but until then kudos to Disney for fixing up the back of the Castle!
WALKING THROUGH
A LOOK AT THE SLEEPING BEAUTY CASTLE WALKTHROUGH
Speaking of the Castle, after being closed for seven years, the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough reopened Wednesday evening at around 5:30 p.m. Imagineers including Tony Baxter could be seen in the area for a while after opening as Disneyland fans in the know lined up for hours ahead of time for the A-Ticket attraction's re-opening.
The Corridor of Goons is a dark, narrow hallway of doors. A couple of them have windows that feature touch-sensitive interactive effects similar in idea to the ones in Dead Man's Grotto on Tom Sawyer Island.
Countless spinning wheels fly around a seemingly endless corridor. In photos, the wheels are moving so fast that they appear only as blurs.

The final battle scene between Maleficent and Prince Philip is pretty spectacular. The animated transformation of Maleficent into the dragon is one of the coolest special effects I've seen from Disneyland in recent years.

The animation in this scene is spectacular; these photos really don't do it justice. You have to see it for yourself.

Next to the Walkthrough exit, in the former Three Fairies Magic Crystals Shop is the Accessible Experience where guests unable or unwilling to navigate the narrow passages and stairs of the traditional walkthrough can watch the CGI Walkthrough bonus feature from the Sleeping Beauty 50th Anniversary Platinum Edition DVD. The CGI Walkthrough is presented on a large, high-definition television.

Be aware that the a couple scenes in the Accessible Experience do differ from the actual walkthrough attraction.

All-in-all, the Walkthrough is a tremendous achievement in classic Disney artistry and showmanship. It's a great experience, especially for Disneyland geeks. The lighting, sound, and visuals are all perfect and the special effects woven throughout are subtle, but dripping with Disney magic. Kudos to everybody at Imagineering who was involved in the project - it's a beautiful job well done.

As for the Accessible Experience, I highly recommend going through the Castle if you can. Experiencing it in person cannot be beat, however, I do warn that if you are wary of narrow spaces and/or are affected by the heat in small spaces, then you may want to wait until crowds die down for this attraction and there's more room to breathe with less people going through. It can get warm in the walkthrough, as many experienced in the cool fall temperatures when the attraction opened Wednesday night.

HAPPIEST TURKEYS ON EARTH
The National Thanksgiving Turkeys, Pumpkin and Pecan, pardoned by President Bush this week flew first class to Disneyland and will now call Big Thunder Ranch home for the rest of their lives.

SNOW SHOW
The "Wintertime Enchantment" snow lighting effects have extended down Main Street to the Christmas tree this year. Thousands of LED lights light up the trees in the Central Plaza, the garlands down Main Street, and Christmas tree.

The bigger and better lighting show is pretty remarkable. It's a great effect and the "Wintertime Enchantment" offering with the Castle snow and lighting is really nicely improved from last year with the inclusion of the hub and Main Street in the show.

I finished my Nano novel. I need to brag about my awesomeness right now. 4 days early and I actually life this story. Basically it tells the tale of a 20 something we all wish we could be (sexy, English degrees, getting her PhD, etc) who gets engaged to this Scottish guy. Within 10 pages he dies. So it's then about how 5 years later she can't get over him, changed her life around to be where he was before he died, and has all these issues (seriously dark and depressing). And oh yeah, the fiance? Now a ghost! Then she meets a guy, who basically had his world turned upside down and is making the best of it. So she started to shake her life up, and living again, with the ghost of the fiance watching. Kinda' love-triangle with a dead guy. And then the guy was actually the guy that rescued her the night of the accident. I have a formal 1 sentence fancy version of the plot. But it's like what happens if the ideal chick lit character gets into a car accident with the ideal chick lit male, gets totally depressed, sees a ghost, and has to get over her life. Lots of fun. Need to brag.

Now I must knit like my life depended on it (the scarf is almost done, giving that to Grandma. The blanket... I'm thinking of making it a blanket/wrap thing because I didn't cast on enough. It's like 2 feet/18 inches wide.).

Wednesday. 6:11pm. I'm still at work. Why?

My car will not start. What a great way to start the weekend. Never had a problem with her before and now this? Low miles and treated great... so why this?

Mechanic down the street came over to take a look. It's the starter. So instead of sleeping in on Friday, I'll be making my way back down here to tow the car from my garage to theirs... half a block away. Yeah. Hopefully I will have the car by Saturday morning.

I girl can hope.

I'm just sad because I haven't had a life in two weeks since the car was in the shop from it's accident (Dad got in to a fender bender the day I left for Disneyland). Social life on hold until this gets fixed. Living far away means that most people don't want to drive out to do a pick up and the buses don't like running on a normal schedule.

Yes, I'm bitching. Blah.

When a bad accident happens and the person survives has horrible injuries someone will say 'They were lucky'. If they were lucky they would not have been in the accident in the first place.

"It was in the last place I looked". Well duh, why would you keep looking if you found it. Of course you are going to stop looking once you find it.

Need versus Want. I am tired of people who confuse need vs. want. You need food, water, shelter. You want a nice house, toys, cars, etc.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Yes, I know, it is not even Thanksgiving, but Christmas has arrived (or will arrive shortly) at the Southern California Theme Parks.

A quick Fire Update, the Southern California Fires have been contained, and while a lot of homes were lost, at least there were no fatalities. The smoke and ash has cleared and not affecting the air quality. Alas, this week has rain in the forecast in Southern California, and that is not good for the burned areas, since the barren land can turn into mudslides if it rains enough.

Knott's and Universal Studios Hollywood offer Free admission to Firefighters.

While Knott's had already planned its annual Fire and Police Salute, they decided to start a week early as a Thank You in regards to the recent fires. The ending date remains December 21st.

Also, this is the last few days for Veteran's to get into Knott's for Free, as that offer expires Thanksgiving Day.

Full details can be found here.

Knott's

Universal Studios Hollywood also has offered Firefighters free admission as of last Friday.
Universal Studios Hollywood will offer free one- day admission for firefighters beginning today and continuing through Christmas Eve.

The offer extends to all badged California firefighting personnel. In addition to the free admission offer for firefighters, up to six family members or friends can receive $25 off a one-day admission.

Larry Kurzweil, president and chief operating officer of Universal Studios Hollywood, said the tribute, timed to start the week of Thanksgiving, is designed to salute firefighters called into action during the recent wildfires in Southern California.

"All of us were moved by the hard work and dedication shown by firefighters during this recent crisis," he said.

"What better way to mark Thanksgiving and the holiday season than to offer our sincere thanks and appreciation to the men and women who are working so tirelessly to protect us."

The free one-day admission is good for one-time use any time from today through Dec. 24 and cannot be combined with any other offer. Firefighters must present an official ID and a badge at the box office.

Friends and family members must come to the park on the same day as the eligible emergency personnel to receive $25 off one-day admission.

Universal Studios Hollywood, for the first time, will remain open on Thanksgiving and Christmas day.
Lots of happenings at the Disneyland Resort this week.

The big event this week is the Jonas Brothers Book signing. Brady MacDonald at the Los Angeles Times wrote about all the special rules for the event being held Tuesday, November 25th.

Jonas Brothers to sign new ‘Burning Up’ book at Disney’s California Adventure - Travel - LATimes.com
The Jonas Brothers will be signing their new book, “Burning Up: On Tour With the Jonas Brothers,” on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008 at Disney’s California Adventure — but be prepared to wait up to 10 hours for the privilege of being in their presence.

Anticipating big crowds and a tight schedule, Disney has taken the unusual step of warning fans not to line up for the 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. book signing before 1 a.m. on Tuesday. Anybody showing up before then will be turned away and asked to leave. A limited number of wristbands (Disney won’t say how many) will be distributed from 7 a.m. until noon on Tuesday.

So just how many books can Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas sign in 90 minutes? Nobody can say for sure. But Disney does promise that everyone who waits in line will get an autographed book (just maybe not autographed personally for you while you gaze longingly at the JoBros). The 90-minute autograph session will take place inside the former Golden Dreams Theater.
Naturally, there are a few more rules (this is Disney after all):

* Theme park admission required.
* Books must be purchased at the park.
* Limit one book per person.
* No place-holding in line.
* No personal items will be signed.
Wednesday, November 26th brings the opening of Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough. Both the Traditional Walkthrough and the Alternative Experience should be ready to go.

FYI, the Alternative Experience is very similar to the Marine Observation Outpost at the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. This room, next to the exit of the castle walkthrough will accommodate Wheelchairs and others who cannot handle walking up and down the stairs. It is basically a video of the walkthrough, in the area that used to host the Crystal Shop.
Thursday is Thanksgiving, and after a year's absence, the National Pardoned Turkeys are returning to Disneyland. After President Bush officially pardons the Turkey (and his Alternative) on Tuesday, they both will fly First Class from Washington, DC to Anaheim.

Thursday morning, Disneyland will have a small Thanksgiving Day Parade down Main Street at 10 AM, featuring the 2 turkeys. Then they will be taken to their new home, the Big Thunder Ranch. By Noon, they should be on public display, where they will remain for the rest of their natural lives.

Well, at least the recorded Turkey Gobbles will make sense again. This is the future home for the lucky two turkeys.

Of course, the regular Christmas Fantasy Parade will be offered later on Thanksgiving Day at their regular times.

Once again, the Candlelight Dinner Reservation system was a Major Fiasco

Due to popular demand, and only a very limited number of seats available, the Disneyland Candlelight online purchasing crashed.

Every year since they switched the booking system to online, it has not worked on its first try.

This year, the original date was Tuesday, November 18th at 6 PM PST. Well, nobody could get through, and after about 2 and 1/2 hours, Disney posted a message that the bookings will be rescheduled and offered on Wednesday, November 19th.

Well, on Wednesday, the system had the same issues, and around 8 PM, Disney started to post some information about the issue, when finally the system started to take orders. A lot of confusion was happening at the time, some folks thinking it was going to be rescheduled again, others thinking somehow it got sold out, etc.

Within a few hours, all the packages sold out. Hopefully Disney will once again look into the issue and try and find a way to make the system work more smoothly in 2009.

For those who didn't get a package, you can still see the Candlelight Processional on Saturday, December 6th and Sunday, December 7th at 5:30 and 8 PM. A limited number of obstructive view seats, and plenty of standing room viewing is available at no charge on a first come, first serve basis.

Disney has addressed the problem with the indoor queue area just before you pick up your 3-D glasses. Disney closed down the area to install an Air Conditioning system in the area, and now, the entire queue area can be used, which should help out in keeping guests cool in the queue and out of the main pathway.
I have your attention now, don’t I?

I must admit, I think about sex often. I bet you do, too. Sometimes, I wonder if that is godly. I love that private time with my wife. Then I realize God created and blesses marital sex, and He calls it good. In the New Testament, Paul exhorts believers to remember that in marriage, the body of the husband also belongs to his wife, and the wife’s body also belongs to her husband (I Corinthians 7:3-4). I like that. Sounds like an abundance of love on command.

As with most things, Scripture challenges us with another level of application- the commandment to love our wives. Reading I Corinthians 13 reminded me that Biblical love is an action, not just a feeling. One section hit me square between the eyes: “Love… is not self-seeking” (vs. 5).

Sex.
(I just wanted to say it again to make sure I didn’t lose you for this next part!)

How many times I am selfish and self-seeking all day long! It’s a matter of what I want when I want it. Especially when I get home from the demands of the day. Occasionally, glimpses of change shine through. Maybe it is the same for you.

Our attention seems to be naturally tuned in to our careers, our pleasure, and our recreation. The culture we live in also reinforces our sin nature. You know- be all that you can be; go for the gusto; win at all costs; be the master of your universe; ad nauseum. Everything from computers to sports, captivates our hearts and occupies our time. We willingly spend our lives pursuing recognition, more money, more toys, and better bodies.

So what about loving our wives and giving ourselves up for them? (Ephesians 5). That is part of this marriage thing. We are called to love and serve our wives- to lay our lives down for them. What speaks sacrificial love to your wife? It is a dinner out, kind words, a cup of coffee and conversation, letting her have a night out while you watch the kids, or taking her to that “chick flick” she’s dying to see? The answers are endless, but only you know what those things are that speak of your preference for her over yourself and what you want.

Want more and better sex? Learn to love on your wife. Use your body, your whole body, to love her. Use your ears to listen to her about her day; your mouth to praise and encourage her; your hands to help her; your heart to understand how she feels; your feet to take her places she enjoys. Use your mind to choose her, instead of doing what just pleases you.

Put her above all others. Then she will be free to be who she really is- the woman of your dreams, the love of your life, the one you married. And your heart will be free to enjoy her. Lastly, seek the Lord with all you’ve got. Nothing is more attractive to a godly wife than a man who loves his Lord. A bulging wallet or bulging biceps can’t even come close.

Sex.
It’s a wonderful thing that God desires to make even better by laying down our lives for our wives. Don’t just believe me about what I’ve written- ask your wife.

Welcome again to Dateline Disneyland. Many, many thanks to our photographers this week who came to the rescue once again and provided the great photos in this update: David "Darkbeer" Michael and Matt "2DieFR" Gottula. Without their help, we wouldn't have an update at all this week, so thanks very much for coming to the rescue.

Feel free to click on any of the Project Tracker photos to be taken to their respective threads on MiceChat, and be sure to check out Dateline Disneyland on Twitter, where you can get mini-updates and links to Disneyland news throughout the week - Twitter.com/DatelineDisney.

Let's get to it, shall we?

WELCOME TO DISNEYLAND!
The 2008 holiday season officially starts today at the Disneyland Resort. Today will mark the first day that everything comes together - Santa's Reindeer Round-Up opens in Frontierland, "it's a small world" is officially open, and the "Believe... in Holiday Magic" fireworks spectacular begins its nightly performances, complete with the fancy Castle snow lighting effects.

The new snowflake sculptures atop the Disneyland main gate turnstiles are the first sign of the holidays upon entering the park.

Of course, we've been seeing holiday decorations slowly going up around the parks since before HalloweenTime ended on November 2.

But the parks is now dressed head to toe in its holiday finest and it's officially the holiday season at Disneyland.

The Sleeping Beauty Winter Castle overlay is now complete and ready to sparkle in the evening.

The overlay is a great feature for the holidays, despite its cluttered and somewhat tacky aesthetics which can be attributed to the unfortunate design of the icicles.

Nevertheless, the Castle overlay has been improved this year, most notably on the back of the Castle, where there is now snow where it just sort of ended last year. Not only that, but it appears the back of the Castle will be lit this year as much of the snow on the back of the Castle has embedded LEDs when there weren't any last year. Nice!

ALMOST READY...
We've been tracking the Sleeping Beauty Castle walkthrough progress for months now since construction walls first appeared. From the outside there's been very little in the way of visible progress on the project, but finally, as we get closer to a still unconfirmed opening date, signage for the attraction has appeared.

Construction walls were still up around the area as of 11/19 when these photos were taken, however, rumor still suggests that Disney is hopeful for an opening today. Still, it's very possible that the attraction may still need a couple more weeks to be ready for its first guests.

We'll keep you posted both here and via Twitter when the attraction finally opens.

"it's a small world" holiday
After an 11-month refurbishment, "it's a small world" officially re-opens today in its holiday version. The attraction soft-opened to park guests on Wednesday.

While much of the show remains the same from previous years, there are a couple significant changes. When the attraction first closed early this year for refurbishment it was reported by MiceAge's Al Lutz that the Papua New Guinea rainforest scene would be removed entirely to be replaced by an American-themed scene.

As the rumors spread, Walt Disney Imagineering came out to various media outlets to try to silence the murmurs. Imagineering both confirmed and denied various aspects of the reports, including the addition of various Disney characters to the show. What is now very clear is that the Rainforest has been moved rather than completely removed. It has now been added to the end of the Polynesia room, which has resulted in some parts of Polynesia to be moved or removed to make room for the abbreviated rainforest scene. Personally, I think the rainforest is too bright now and seems sort of out of place, but after over four decades of being in the same place it's probably safe to say that the rainforest's re-staging will seem awkward to most fans.

Despite its awkwardness, it's good to see the show scene remains in some capacity. As for the Disney characters and the America-themed show scene, we'll see them make their debut when the traditional version of the attraction returns after the holiday season.

The other notable addition to "it's a small world" is the large new sun prop near the end of the finale "white" room. Interestingly, this sun isn't really all that new and is really a part of the original show returning after being gone for some time, possibly even since the show's end at the 1964 World's Fair. 2DieFR talks about the returning icon in his discussion on the MiceChat boards: New Sun Prop in small world "White" room - Recreated or Original?
Back inside Disneyland, the "Celebration Custom Printers" has taken over the Disney Showcase annex, which has been doing custom printing on hats and other items for some time now. The new name for the store is not only for better visibility, but also for the upcoming "What will you celebrate?" marketing campaign which will focus heavily on custom celebration vacations which will of course need custom celebration vacation souvenirs.
Also, the National Thanksgiving Turkeys that President Bush will pardon on Thanksgiving will soon call Disneyland home. Past turkeys have called this pen home during park hours. You can even vote for the names President Bush will give the turkeys when he pardons them at the White House's 2008 Thanksgiving web site: whitehouse.gov/holiday/thanksgiving/2008/

Who says we don't do Disney in the Weekend Update? We have a super duper dose of Disney for you this week. The Christmas holiday seems to capture the imaginations of our photographers because we have a bumper crop of photos from the U.S. Disney parks. Two, count 'em, two reports from Florida, courtesy of SummerInFL and TDLFAN. Then we're off to Disneyland for a triple header from Brenden Delzer, PhotoMatt and Fishbulb. We even have a fond look at Disney's California Adventure from MickeyMaxx. dsnylndmom gives us an inside look at a luxury box at a sports stadium followed by a new segment by darkfairycthulu that features vintage postcard images.

Our image count is pretty high this week, so take a break while the photos load. When you return you'll find another crazy trip around the world with Weekend Update!
They light up the castle following a short show called "Cinderella's Holiday Wish." The basic premise of the show is the Fab 4 (No Pluto) are talking over how they want to decorate the castle, when the Fairy Godmother shows up and says it should be Cinderella's choice as she does live there, naturally. Cinderella then comes out and tells her she would like to drape it with icicles and as the music swells the Fairy Godmother covers the castle in a dazzling array of twinkling lights, I mean icicles. ;)
