With the parks closed, we’re all trying to find our Disney fix. While some have built their own attractions at home, we’re turning our attention to fan-made Disneyland in popular video games.
We have three games for you today, along with Disney modifications. Let’s start with one of the most popular games ever made, Minecraft.
Minecraft
Mojang’s plucky little block game is a strange phenomenon. This thing is super flexible, and some creative players have built some amazing recreations of Disney Parks. All you need is a copy of Minecraft to enjoy them for yourself.
What really makes Minecraft shine is working attractions and park audio. For example, the server “Imagineering Fun,” has a great Haunted Mansion (it’s also where my screenshots are from).
When you enter the Haunted Mansion, the foyer music comes on. The doors open automatically and seal behind you. When you enter the stretching room, the Ghost Host plays and the portraits actually stretch.
Everything about making all this work is a clever use of the restrictions of the game. We love it.
Minecraft Disney Parks Servers:
Servers are a one-click ticket to the parks. Here are a couple of our favorite servers you can join:
Imagineering Fun – Disneyland. We like the level of detail despite it being unfinished.
MCParks – Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa.
Palace Network – Formerly McMagic. Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando.
Yours! – This is Minecraft, you can make your own! Share any of your Disney creations with us in the comments below!
Unfortunately, it seems like to get the best experience, all these servers only work on the Java version of Minecraft. That means the mobile, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch versions won’t work, you’ll need to play on a PC.
How can we make this even better? How about virtual reality?
It’s still Minecraft, mind you, but VR Minecraft is pretty immersive and VR Minecraft Disneyland is even better. I certainly feel like the attractions experience is significantly better because of the way the game handles your view. It’s hard to explain, it’s better if you try it yourself, but it feels closer to riding the real thing.
The Vivecraft website has all the info for setting up the VR if you’re interested.
Left 4 Dead 2
Probably the most violent inclusion on this list, Left 4 Dead 2 has an infamously creative mod community. Truly, the gem of the community is Journey to Splash Mountain.
If you don’t play with anything else in this article, this one campaign is worth downloading. The amount of effort put into the custom assets that this campaign uses makes it one of the most accurate fan-made recreations of Disneyland I’ve seen.
This particular campaign takes you from the Disneyland turnstile along the west side of the park, crisscrossing attractions and backstage areas on your way to Critter Country. All the while, you’re defending yourself from hordes of the undead.
Surprisingly, blowing brains out and Disneyland go together pretty well.
Left 4 Dead 2 Workshop Disney Mods:
Custom campaigns can be installed via the Steam Workshop. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Journey to Splash Mountain
- Night Terror (This is a pack, but the Orlando Haunted Mansion is included)
- Zombies of the Caribbean
- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Zombies (This one requires manual installation)
While we’re at it, here are two audio mods we like:
I should make note that these mods require the PC version of the game. The Xbox and PlayStation versions of the game don’t support mods.
Garry’s Mod
Garry’s Mod is one of the most tremendously impressive sandbox games ever. It has one of the largest thriving communities that continually add new things to play with, essentially making Garry’s Mod into any game you want it to be. How about plugging in a little Disneyland?
There are a few maps on the Steam Workshop based on Disney Parks, mostly Walt Disney World. I was only able to find one map based on Disneyland, and it is of the Tower of Terror. In fact, there are four versions of Tower in the workshop!
The two best maps I found in the workshop were Orlando’s Haunted Mansion and Pleasure Island’s Adventurer’s Club. Adventurer’s Club is actually pretty well detailed and includes quite a few elements you can interact with.
Disney Parks for Garry’s Mod Workshop:
With the flexibility of the sandbox, you can choose to play any way you wish. Each of these modes is essentially a whole new game. Try one of these on your favorite map:
- Prop Hunt – Hide and Seek but the ones hiding disguise themselves as objects
- Murder – One player is the murderer, everyone else has to figure out who it is before he kills them.
- Hide and Seek – Classic tag hide and seek game
- Trouble in Terrorist Town (built-in) – One player is the traitor, the rest have to figure out who he is.
- Roleplaying (or make your own). This is a sandbox, you can do whatever you want! Let us know in the comments what you’ve created.
Here are a few Disney Parks maps designed for Garry’s Mod:
- Tower of Terror – Hollywood Studios (I felt this was the best one)
- Tower of Terror – Disney California Adventure at night
- Haunted Mansion – Magic Kingdom
- Adventurer’s Club – WDW Pleasure Island
Just a note, Garry’s mod requires you to mount other Source games to work. You’ll likely need Counter-Strike: Source installed to play. And yes, Garry’s Mod is PC-only.
Let’s make this a little better with virtual reality:
Being able to virtually inhabit some of these spaces has helped the isolation a little bit, VR has made that even better. It’s (probably) a scientific fact that taking a ride on the Haunted Mansion and waving to Leota helps relieve stress.
This one’s a bit tricky to set up. If you’re willing to give it a try, this workshop collection should get you started. You’ll want to read through the VRMod page as well.
Those are just a few of the fan-made Disney creations we’ve found, but we’re sure there are a lot more. Have you tried any of these before? What else can we look at? Let us know in the comments below.
