The Walt Disney Company reports a 26% drop in profits
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-f...,6371914.story

Quote:

Parks and resorts, which tend to be slower to respond to and recover from dips in the economy, saw a 9% drop in revenue to $2.7 billion and a 19% decline in operating income to $521 million, as more visitors streamed into Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and Disneyland Resort in Anaheim but spent less. Domestic park attendance rose 3%, helped in part by the timing of Easter vacation. But hotel, ticket and meal promotions used to lure visitors, while moving the turnstiles, also undercut operating margins.
Changes to the NON-Celebration Barbeque

The former "Celebration Roundup and Barbeque" has been renamed the "Big Thunder Ranch Barbeque" and has a new menu. There are now two different menus, one for Lunch and and expanded one for dinner.

There are no longer the Toy Story Characters, and now Dessert and Sodas (For adults) are extra. The changes have supposedly helped and Disney is seeing increased attendance for the venue.

Could Anaheim build a Monorail or PeopleMover?

The City of Anaheim is looking to find a way to get folks from the proposed ARTIC Transporation station next to the Honda Center to the Disneyland Resort area, and is looking at a few choices to help get guests to the parks.

If Anaheim gets new monorails (and that would be awesome!), I hope the city has better luck than Disneyland has had with its new monorails! And, don't forget the air conditioning!

Interesting that Anaheim is opting for a transportation system. Wasn't that one of the major plans for the 'resort' back in the 90's? Eisner and Co. wanted to link the Ducks and Angels and that horrible Tinseltown thing with a monorail as I recall. It was a huge part of the whole Westcot plan... as I recall, anyway.

From the article about the KLOS "sleep at the haunted mansion" contest:

    Quote:
“The Haunted Mansion is 40 years old and, like any building its age, it may be full of creaks and other eerie noises throughout the night,” according to Himmelberg. “The guests may also be visited by the ‘occupants’ of the Haunted Mansion.”
I hope there is a follow-up article describing this after it's over! Sounds like a blast!

    Excellent update David, thank you!

I really hope that Anaheim looks beyond the cheap transportation solution and builds something which really enhances the whole resort area and becomes a beloved thematic element of the city. Buses won't cut it! Light rail, elevated rail, people movers, and monorails are all preferred options from a guest and visitor standpoint, even if they may not be as easy to maintain or as cheap as buses.

I'm actually glad the Golden Dreams building is gone. I was concerned for awhile that they'd go out of their way to reuse it, as they did with the Winnie the Pooh thing across the Esplanade. Good to know they'll be constructing a building for the attraction, rather than the other way around.

Regarding the Spurs Steakhouse at Knott's, I find it funny that the new furniture doesn't look that different from the temporary stuff. I do wish them well (as I think an upscale option is great), but still think they need to improve the restaurant's atmosphere and open it up to outside guests. The crowd inside, based on a recent visit, seems more interested in buying self-service Icees by the "yard."

10 participants for the Iran protest? What a shame.

Anyways, the haunted mansion sleep-over looks like an amazing experience! How I would love to be spooked in the middle of the night by creeks and cracks of a 40 year old building .

Isn't it ironic that the Knott's Steakhouse WAS originally open to outside guests? Maybe they'll offer a pass just to go there eventually, like the shopper's pass.

People are spending less because the economy is in shambles. Businesses, Disney being the BIGGEST offender, keep raising prices in a bad economy, then wonder why their sales are slumping.

We are Premium APs from Northern California and only go 3-4 times a year. With this next round of increases, we'll drop down to Deluxe. So, in their effort to extract $80 more from our family, we'll, instead, buy a cheaper passes. Thus Disney actually loses $200 from this household, in ticket costs alone. The lower pass means blockout days, which we didn't have before. Blockout day means fewer trips. Fewer trips translate into even more LOST revenue from hotel stays to restaurant meals to souvenirs.

The accountants at Disney really are MORONS!

Kinda of a minor bummer that the Pace of Fine Arts bldg is closed off for now. I really do hope it doesn't become "private property" after the TLM ride is done. What I mean by that is it no longer being open to general [???] and instead being exclusively part of an attraction queue, etc.

WHY does Premium go up twice as much as the other passes? If they really want to cut down on the AP crowding, they should raise the lower cost passes up just as much, or more, as I expect they are more popular!

For me, buying an AP is a great priveledge, and I'm saving up for my next Premium to buy it with cash. It's still worth it to me, what with the number of individual days I spend in the park. Just think: Nearly unlimited access to Disneyland for a whole year? If APs never existed and I was asked to put a price on that, it would be much higher than the new $430. What bothers me more is the disparity between the different APs.. the So Cal ones ought to have topped 200 by now, and the Deluxe should be nearer 300! I'm currently on the monthly payments, and while it was a good option for me, I see the crowd problems it's causing and enough is enough. I myself certainly can drum up the discipline to save up ahead of time for a pass. Since not everyone will do that, I agree that cutting the monthlies would help a lot.

Is is bad that I feel a little smug about the name change for the BBQ Roundup?

If the proposed Walgreens is a full on Walgreens and not just the little pharmacy kind, that would be fairly convenient for all those people who keep asking if there's stores with in walking distance of the DLR... It's a longer walk, but would still be fine for good prices on essentials.
