Once again, more crowds this week at the Disneyland Resort
Posted 11-06-2009 at 04:03 AM by In the Parks
Crowds, crowds, crowds - and Christmas, construction, and more crowds. OK, should we talk about sports, including the Super Clasico Playoff game this Sunday when the LA Galaxy hosts CD Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. - or should we talk about the Theme Parks and the expected large crowds (again)? Let's take a look at the parks! But first . . . Go Galaxy!

The only person saying the problem was addressed is you. MrToadie has a right to say it's ugly if he wants and no, it's not a fact that the problem has been addressed. You think that everything in this refurbishment is going to be good? That's your opinion.Quote:
I totally agree, that red topper looks no better than anything they did pre refurbishment. It doesn't take a genious to figure out a gaudy red metal lattice is not going to look good, completed or not.Quote:Is it just me or is the new fountain (toper metal thing) the ugliest thing on the face of the planet and it looks like from the photos its leaning out of level. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING??? I was expecting a beautiful tile ceramic bowl topper for the fountain to be poring down fountains of spectacular water, which would be correct for a park in the 1920’s LA not the golden Zeffer monstrosity!!
Totally out of place and BAD SHOW!!
Thank you Darkbeer for the wonderful photos, the areas finally looks like its coming together and the rest of the area is going to be magnificent.Posted 11-06-2009 at 12:47 PM by Seawolf

With 10,000 gamers in town, Disneyland is going to be packed, especially at night, after the convention closes down for the day.Posted 11-06-2009 at 01:42 PM by whamo

So, were you with the little girl in the Southern Belle dress, or did you accidentally stalk her a little bit?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that was baffled by the topper thingy. That structure has been getting more and more beautiful with each passing update, but then the plop that topper on it and now it looks corny. I'm really hoping that it's incomplete because if that's the way it's going to look, it's going to be very out of place.
And as for authenticity, I couldn't care less how things looked back in the day. What I care about is does it look good. Disneyland, and by extension DCA, was never supposed to be about pure authenticity. It's about reality passed through the filter of fantasy. Nothing in Disneyland is completely authentic, Frontierland doesn't even look close to Knotts' authentic ghost town. It's about taking reality and shifting it slightly to make it aesthetic and beautiful, moreso than it could ever be in real life.
Excellent update Darkbeer, I love your column every week! It the perfect cap to the week.Posted 11-06-2009 at 05:40 PM by Athlonacon

Well I put my vote in NOW!
And this my opinion...................
I think this tower thing is Pretty.
I think this tower thing is Ugly.
I think this tower thing is pretty ugly!
It's look like Disney doing a 3 step dance ,
2 step forward to fix thing up ....
1 step backward going back to UGLY!
I feel sorry for Grizzly Peak in the background!Posted 11-06-2009 at 06:30 PM by Eagleman

Using some photo editing tools, I've determined that that topper thing is level, its just the curved vertical stringers give the optical illusion that it is not. It's so fancy compared to the base which gets me. Maybe once they've finished the area it will not seem so bad.
Darkbeer, your photos astound. Keep up the good work. I love reading (and viewing) your reports.Posted 11-06-2009 at 08:11 PM by kcknebel

Payment plans no more, please. DL must be posting record numbers this year. Everytime we go the place is packed. I keep looking for that slow period between the busy seasons and I haven't found it. We are seriously considering taking a year (or longer) off from DL.Posted 11-06-2009 at 08:46 PM by toemblem

How many ducks are going to be at Disneyland? Seems like ducks and humans get along fine.Posted 11-06-2009 at 09:33 PM by bayouguy

Toemblem,
Without a slow season, the annual pass loses a lot of its appeal. But, there's still the rainy days and weekday mornings, even with today's crowds.Posted 11-06-2009 at 10:28 PM by whamo

Walt (and many others) were always more concerned about having an authentic look than "just looking good." Authenticity allows for longevity; accuracy has a longer shelf-life.Quote:Originally Posted by Athlonacon

If the final structure truly is what it looked like back in that time period then it will look appropriate for that part of the park. However, if it's seen in other parts of the park then the Imagineers are going to have to figure out how to make it multi-functional and work with the other lands as well.Posted 11-07-2009 at 12:11 AM by Orcatime

Just a few last comments on this subject and I will let it GO.
I was there for the opening of California Adventure on Annual Pass holders pre-view. I was not as critical of the park as most were, I always said I was glad to have something new and always believed it would be upgraded as time went on, which is exactly what has taken place!! They went right to work with Bugs land, Tower and now the whole 2 Billion dollar redo. Of coarse we are all here on these sites because we are more than passionate, we border on fanatical when it comes to our Disney theme parks
(Which is a GOOD THING), in short we love and care deeply about our Disneyland.
As my fellow Miceage members have stated and I AGREE, let’s let them finish the Bay redo, its going to be alright and what a great show and new area we will have to frolic in.
I still think the big red Fountain thingiee is UGLY!!
Darkbeer and Andy, keep those photos coming, can’t tell you how much I appreciate all of you in are fun and quirky community, keeping us up to date.
Cheers to all.Posted 11-07-2009 at 07:06 AM by MrToadie
