Short-term decisions versus Long-term decisions - COMMENTARY
Quite a few recent news articles have gotten my attention, and many different folks are asking "Why did Disney make this decision?"
Disney is in the business, as is any other "for profit" company, to make a profit, but sometimes folks will ask, WHY?
The latest Disney decision in the news is the shutting down of the Virtual Magic Kingdom (VMK) website. John Frost over at The Disney Blog wrote a nice summary of events, and brings up the fact that Disney might have had to make a decision to renew a third party contract to keep the game going.
http://thedisneyblog.com/2008/04/15/...magic-kingdom/
When Disney Parks (I still hate that name for the division — could it be any less magical) wanted an online promotion as part of the world wide celebration of Disneyland’s 50th Anniversary, they paid Disney Online to set it up for them. Disney Online then went and licensed the software from Sulake Corporation to build the Virtual Magic Kingdom. I understand that Disney Online also did some additional programming work on top of what Sulake provided.
There have been some discussions recently that VMK is closing due to the original licensing agreement with Sulake coming to an end. Sulake did just sign an "exclusive agreement" with Paramount Studios to provide virtual worlds for their film properties. That may have had something to do with it, but I haven’t been able to confirm that one way or another.
And Rick Aristotle Munarriz at the Motley Fool makes a very good point in regards to VMK.
http://www.fool.com/investing/genera...s-kingdom.aspx
So why kill VMK, especially when it would have been the ideal gateway drug for families to get hooked on Disney's new line of premium membership communities?
That's what I don't get. The site's public rationale is that the community was never supposed to last forever. It was just a Disneyland milestone promotion. That's hogwash. You don't spend years shoving codes in cereal boxes and selling cards and pins in the actual parks for virtual goodies that will be deemed worthless in a few weeks. More importantly, if you want consumers to devote time to the new communities, you're setting a terrible loyalty precedent by dismantling the one that started it all. Do you think any of the ex-VMK users will trust the new vibrant worlds Disney creates if they know they can all vanish under the guise of an anniversary promotion?
And that is a key point, EVERY decision that ANY company makes creates both good will and bad will. To be honest, I played around with VMK at the beginning, but found out it wasn't my thing, but it was very creative and had a lot of fans and regular users. A lot of folks put time and money into the game, and then to be told that it is just "over" has left a bitter taste in many mouths. As I understand it, there is no real chance of the website staying open after May 21st of this year.

VMK is still featured at Innoventions

And they are advertising "new" sign-ups, even though that is no longer being offered at the website
There have been other recent instances of "fans" speaking out. The most well known item is Disney's California Adventure Park, and many changes have been made to the park since opening due to what guests have complained about, including the additions of "Flik's Fun Fair" for kids, Tower of Terror for themeing, and the upcoming Toy Story Mania! opening June 17th. Plus the announcement of about $1.1 Billion to improve the park in other ways. But still, as shown in an Editorial from the Los Angeles Times this month, the complaints are kept in the spotlight.
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/...0,732586.story

Current progress for the Toy Story Mania! area.
This is a clear example where Disney decided to go "cheap" and is paying for it today.
But also in this case, Disney did listen and is trying to improve its product.
Now the most recent story, that Al Lutz first reported in late February is the "small world" possible changes.
There has been a lot of attention on this, with many viewpoints coming out, with websites, Main Stream Media and Disney speaking out about the changes.

Work on the "iasw" facade has started
This week, Disney had the WDI executive in charge of the "small world" project speak on one of the local NPR station, KCRW.
http://savethesmallworld08.blogspot....adictions.html
Ms. Irvine is now the third senior Disney official, along with Marty Sklar and Dave Smith, to go on the record to try and address the worries of many fans that the changes might be "too drastic" for a classic attraction.
In this case, we won't know the final outcome until the ride reopens, but it is clear that Disney does pay attention to the Internet, and other sources, such as e-mail and snail mail.
There is nothing wrong with letting folks know your opinion, whether it is the closing of VMK, the possible changes of "small world", or the disappointing park that DCA was when it opened.
Sites such as MiceAge are around because there are fans of Disneyland and other Theme/Amusement Parks, plus many other related products, such as Disney entertainment offerings. We all appreciate the hard work employees do to try and provide their best, but sometimes, you just have to ask "What were they thinking?" And that is not just for Disney, but for any company.

Current progress on the Grand Californian Hotel/DVC expansion

I think the LA Times did a good job at stating the obvious. I have never been to DCA and why should I when for the SAME PRICE I can spend my day at DL?
I am glad to see some major upgrades to the park and I can hope they bring the value up to their ticket price.
I live 2,500 miles away from DL so when I do get out that way, I have to make it count.Posted 04-21-2008 at 05:26 AM by JBodine

You guys missed some great stuff Saturday, and I'm sorry I had no camera.
We were leaving the park early Saturday night just as the 6:30 parade was winding up. As we were heading up Main Street, Cast Members directed (herded) us through the backstage gate and had us march from behind Carferee Corner all the way up Mauin Street to the gate between the firehouse and The Emporium. We saw lots of neat backstage stuff. The staging and mantainance area for the Jungle cruise boats, the sheds for the Main Street streetcars, Cast Member lockers, lunch rooms and payphones, tons of stuff I had never seen before.
there were a few advertisong barricades in place to hide some of it, but most was wide open for viewing.
My 7 year old's comment was "I thought this was against the rules!"
It was absolutely a 'side' of Disneyland I had never seen before.Posted 04-21-2008 at 07:43 AM by ttrocc7007

My sense is that there is a set of Small World Disney characters being made for Anaheim, but the reactions this is getting are being assessed before any get installed. (Worse case, they end up as duplicates in HK or offered to another Disney Park) I think there's a lot of things that are being strategically leaked out to get a sense of the potential reactions- whether it's Night Kingdom, this Small World addition or even Condi being the running mate to McCain. And honestly, it's still of more concern when an editorial against it shows up in the likes of the LA Times as opposed to a known haven of Disneyoids. But still, the fact is that the internet has made all sorts of niche opinions and news more visible and fodder for traditional media.Posted 04-21-2008 at 08:44 AM by Kiba

I think Disney should have asked the fans and visitors of Disneyland what they should do with Its A Small World because I'm pretty sure that about 95% of everybody out there doesn't want the ride to change and add new characters. I mean whats up with that, its fine, its perfect, go change the Disney World Its A Small World NOT Disneyland's.

I was at Disneyland last night. They were doing testing of the new monorail at about 9:00pm. The new monorail looks really neat. I especially liked the lights inside the cabin, it looked like they were black lights. All the windows glowed this cool purple color. I can't wait till they start letting guests in it.Posted 04-22-2008 at 07:51 AM by pwilkes

Saw Monorail Red yesterday afternoon. Was standing over in the former motorboat lagoon when this beautiful red train came around the bend from out of the trees. This thing is sleek and classy, and most surprisingly, quiet... It makes the Mark V sound like a big rig... I honestly can't wait to see the entire fleet up and running! What an upgrade!
I was kicking myself for not bringing a camera! Thanks for the pics Darkbeer! They look great!Posted 04-22-2008 at 01:19 PM by headkaes
