NEWS UPDATE - FRIDAY, JANUARY 2nd, 2 PM PST

Legoland California Names New GM

San Diego Business Journal Online - business news for San Diego, California

Quote:

Legoland California’s longtime general manager, John Jakobsen, was promoted to managing director of Legoland Parks and will be based out of Merlin Entertainments Group’s headquarters in England. Peter Ronchetti, formerly the GM of Thorpe Park in England, succeeds Jakobsen as GM at the Carlsbad theme park.
Legoland California made the announcement Jan. 1, but Jakobsen had been splitting his time recently as general manager of the Carlsbad park and the company’s other three Legoland parks, in Denmark, Germany and London, as well as two others that are on the drawing board for Dubai and Malaysia.
End of Breaking News....

First off, here is hoping everyone has a GREAT 2009!

Not much news this week, so we will be looking at some of the plans for parks in 2009, plus a trip back in history....

First off, a special New Years Gift.

Pirate's Dinner Adventure in Buena Park - Selected Shows for just $20.09

Pirate's Dinner Adventure on Beach Blvd, near Knott's Berry Farm has a great offer if you can make the dates.

From January 5th through the 28th, they are offering tickets to the show for Monday through Wednesday showings (Not Valid January 7th and 14th) for just $20.09 in honor of the new year. (Tax and Tip are not included).

You must reserve in advance, maximum party of 8, and the reservation for all guests must be made at the same time for the same show under one reservation.

Clarification of the Disneyland Resort 2009 Entertainment Offerings.

Disneyland.com has still not be updated with correct information, and a notice has been sent to Cast Members clarifying what will be offered in early 2009.

Both Fantasmic! and Aladdin Musical will be offered (but not mentioned at Disneyland.com's Entertainment Schedule).

Here is the breakdown for the period starting Monday, January 5th. (Disneyland and Knott's both end the Christmas season on Sunday, January 4th).

First off, Disneyland.

As I first mentioned on December 15th, the non-revenue portion of Princess Fantasy Faire will no longer be offered (Royal Coronation Ceremony and Disney Princess Storytelling), but the area and the meet and greet will remain available to guests on a daily basis.

Disney also officially admitted that the Parade of Dreams will not return to Disneyland (Rumored to be going to WDW). The new Celebrate! - A Street Party will premiere on March 27th, 2009 as a replacement, though note it is not being called a "parade" (Of course, all dates subject to change).

The Remember... Dreams Come True Fireworks will only be offered on January 17th through 19th and February 14th through 16th for the holiday weekends. Fireworks are expected to return on a regular basis in March of 2009 (More than likely, late March).

Fantasmic! will be offered daily as a substitute for the lack of a parade "through most of January and February", and the memo recommends checking back for regular updates.

At DCA...

Disney's Electrical Parade will go on Hiatus and is expected to return on June 12th, 2009.

Pixar Play Parade will go to a 5 day a week schedule, dark normally Monday and Tuesday, expected to be expanded for Peak Easter Break in early April.

Disney's Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular will remain open, with its normal 5 days a week schedule, dark normally on Wednesday and Thursday.

High School Musical 3 will go to 3 days a week, Friday through Sunday.

Of course, schedules are subject to change, especially at DCA due to Private Events, such as when the NAMM Convention is held later this month, and due to Holidays and Dance/Cheer competitions.

No mention of Drawn to the Magic, which is supposedly going on Hiatus, not sure of a return date.

CORN DOGS RULE

Well, last week we picked on the high price for an ear of Corn at DCA, this week we will talk about Corn Dogs, which are about the same price, and a much better deal.

Disneyland + corn dog + horse-drawn streetcar = happiness - Travel - LATimes.com

Brady MacDonald at the Los Angeles Times says...

Quote:

I’d often heard that the Corn Dog Wagon next to Carnation Café served a legendary version of the classic county fair food. I’d even read that the L.A. Weekly’s Pulitzer Prize-winning restaurant critic Jonathan Gold had claimed he’d never tasted a better corn dog in his life. The foodies on Chowhound called it “the best corn dog you will ever eat.”

Needless to say, I approached the wagon with mixed emotions. On the one hand, I had high expectations. At the same time I wondered, how good could a corn dog possibly be?

I’ve eaten very few corn dogs in my life and will certainly never eat another that compares. The business end bulged like a barnacle. The deep-fried cornmeal tasted of chewy sweetness. The slightly spicy hot dog snapped with juicy goodness. Quite simply, it was heaven on a stick.

I still am a big "Hot Dog on a Stick" fan, maybe just for the outfits... (But I am also a big fan of the Corn Dogs, Cheese on a Stick and the Lemonade!)

The "27 Months of over 2.25 Million Prizes" is finally over, now "What will you celebrate?"

Well, Disney has started to honor the free admission on your Birthday offer as part of the new 2009 marketing campaign.

Quick recap of the rules, you MUST show up on your actual Birthday (folks born on February 29th can show up either February 28th or March 1st, since there is no leap year in 2009). You must have an official ID, for most adults, that is a Driver's License or State Issued ID card or a Passport. For Children, it is an OFFICIAL Birth Certificate or certified copy. (NO copies that are not certified by the county) Anybody worldwide is eligible to attend on their birthday, of course, they have to pay for the transportation themselves

Pre-Registration at the website is preferred (it will speed up the process at the Ticket Booths), but NOT required.

https://secure-disneyland.disney.go....OYBLandingPage

One piece of interesting news that was posted at the MiceChat Discussion Boards Thursday evening, the Birthday Fun Card, which is an alternative gift to the free admission for many Annual Passholders and folks who bought a multi-day vacation package, will not expire. The original information stated that it had to be fully used on your birthday. It is still restricted to Merchandise and Guided Tours, and not valid for Food or Park Admission Media (aka tickets/vacation packages).

What special offers will be offered to Southern California residents in early 2009?

Last week, I mentioned the new Universal Studios Hollywood offer, which is the new All Access Annual Pass at $72, and that Knott's will be having a Food Drive that allows everyone to enter at the kid's price of $22.99 for most of January 2009.

Now the big question is what will the Disneyland Resort do? We already know the multi-day offers that are designed for out-of-town guests (Everyone at the Kid's Price for 3 day or longer ParkHoppers if purchased in advance), but what will the local residents get?

Lately, it has been the "Pay for Disneyland, get DCA for FREE!" offer, aka the 2fer, but that does require a purchase of $69 for adults, and $59 for kids 3 through 9 (if Single Day Ticket Prices don't go up on Monday, January 5th). One option is to go back in history and do a Disneyland only discount, which would drop the $69 price by a few dollars. In the current economy, this is an option that might bring more guests to the park than the higher priced 2fer deal.

In case you don't know the history of the Southern California offers, prior to DCA opening in 2001, it was a basic dollars off a one day Disneyland ticket, usually tied into a Supermarket promotion.

In 2001, Disney decided it wanted to focus on the opening of DCA and did not offer a SoCal offer in early 2001. Disney normally offered a discount in the early months of the year (January through April) since it is the slow off-season and they want to help drive additional visits to the park.

But with the failure of DCA to attract crowds, Disney did have a special offer in the summer of 2001 for local residents. They "borrowed" the offer that Universal Studios Hollywood was offering for the early 2001 season (Adults get in at the Kids Price, and a free Kids Ticket with purchase of the Adult ticket). This summer offer basically was 2 tickets for $33.

The next major change was in November of 2001, when Disney made major changes to the current Annual Passports, basically eliminating the Disneyland Only AP and dropping the prices of the 2-park AP's to the Disneyland Only prices (In early 2001, it costs an extra $50 to $100 to add DCA and make your AP a 2-park AP).

November, 2001 was the birth of what is now called the "Pay for Disneyland, get DCA for FREE!" ticket, aka the 2fer.

The original ticket was a 2 day Ticket, with each day valid for just one park, you could go to Disneyland on both days if you decided to (no forced visit to DCA).

It was also more expensive than a one day ParkHopper ($6 more), $49 for adults, and $39 for kids.

Early 2002 had Disney basically repeat the Summer 2001 offer for DCA, but tied to the Albertsons Grocery Store chain.

Summer of 2002 had these SoCal offers...

1) A Two-Park Hopper Pass for $79 per adult and $59 per child.

2) The return of the Adult at Kids price, and a free Kid Ticket, for summer of 2002, it was $35 for two tickets.

November of 2002 had the return of the 2fer, this time though, you had to use one day to go to DCA, but since it was more expensive that an one day ticket to Disneyland, it didn't sell well. $54 for an adult vs $45 for a Disneyland only ticket, so $9 more to visit DCA if you opted for the SoCal special.

The 2005 version of the "Pay for Disneyland, get DCA for FREE!" tickets.

January of 2003 had the offer changed to the "Pay for Disneyland, get DCA for FREE!" current offer, being the same price as a one day, one park ticket ($47). This way, the ticket sellers could easily sell these tickets to locals who came up to the window planning to buy just a one day ticket to Disneyland.

The one thing that Disney failed to plan for was the fact that vast majority of folks went to Disneyland for the first visit, and then put the ticket on the Refrigerator until it was about ready to expire . So when the tickets expired in May, they had to add additional entertainment and hours to just DCA due to the demand. In fact, the last weekend, they had Management working the DCA turnstiles, offering guests to use the second day at Disneyland instead, to try and keep DCA for hitting capacity due to the "free" tickets, many of which were handed out as gifts to others after using the Disneyland part. Disney changed the rules to make all tickets expire 30 days after use of the first day to prevent the problem from happening again.

By the end of 2003, Disney was relying on the "Pay for Disneyland, get DCA for FREE!" tickets so much, they had it available for 9 months out of the year, including August (peak Summer season).

And of course, January of 2004 also had the 2fer ticket offered again to Southern California Residents. (The ticket is great for getting attendance turnstile clicks at DCA, since it basically forces the guest to enter DCA one day).

And it has been offered for the January through April period every year since 2003.

So will we have the "Pay for Disneyland, get DCA for FREE!" deal again in early 2009, or will Disney come up with something new to try and simulate more ticket sells? We should know in a few days...

New Years Eve around 4 PM, Disney stopped selling single day tickets, though by 8 PM, they removed the restriction and sold all tickets for the rest of the evening.

DCA on the other hand was very light in the crowd department, with many rides being walk ons.

Disney did close down the Timon Parking Lot entrance, but never did open the Buzz Lightyear(Strawberry Field) lot.

Well, while they were placed up in early October, finally the Anaheim signs make sense!

Anaheim Police was showing its presence at the Harbor Boulevard Pedestrian Entrance

Disney should pay for the horses to be there more often, they were a hit with guests. Amazing Mellow Horses, and great looking! This is Doc, the other two horses were Cody and Chico.

This photo is of the kids picked for the last Flag Retreat in 2008, along with many members of the Disneyland Resort Dream Squad, which was their last official duty before being retired. The CM's will be reassigned, more than likely going back to their former position prior to being named to the Dream Squad.

Folks camping out for Fireworks views for the 9:25 PM and Midnight shows at 5 PM, too bad the fog pretty much blocked most of the fireworks for both shows.

Something still is missing, hopefully will be fixed prior to the reopening in February.

One of the DCA DJ stages, this one in Pacific Wharf. Crowds were very light at DCA all day.

Note that they have removed some of the "face" on the Sun Wheel.

Just a lucky shot

Interesting to see that the High School Musical 3/Hannah Montana Pins are on sale, and this was the second Pin Shop I noticed it at.

Well, that should do it for this week, make sure and keep track of the News Section on the MiceAge front page, any Ticket Deals will be posted there when announced.

Once again, Happy New Year and Go Chargers!!! (Wow, still a bit shocked we made the playoffs

When will the rumor be confirmed that the Parade of Dreams will be heading to Walt Disney World? Would the floats fit along the narrow paths? I was a bit disappointed that WDW limited the number of floats in their version of Block Party Bash.

Excellent update, DB. It was my perception from my visits last week that the parks wouldn't be as crowded as they've been in the past over the holidays. Seems that this prediction came true!

One question - the L.A. Times article referenced "...the Corn Dog Wagon next to Carnation Café...". Am I wrong, or is this corn dog wagon actually next to the Plaza Inn? Not your error, but the Times' error, if I'm right. Thanks.

To correct here, Disneyland has not admitted that Parade of Dreams is not coming back. All they stated in those CM postings was there would be no parades through March due to track work. That has been known for several months already.

Good to see your update again. Thanks for all the information.

I too would like to know when/if Parade of Dreams is scheduled at WDW. It would be funny if it was back there by Spring Break as that is when I'm going.

I also question the Corn Dog Stand. I don't remember seeing one by Carnation Cafe. I've never had one but now I'm tempted.

Let me quote the memo to CM's...

    Quote:

Walt Disney's Parade of Dreams will not return to Disneyland® Park after the holidays.
    Pretty clear to me.

And yes, Brady got the location wrong.. The Corn Dog Stand is between the Plaza Inn, and the Photo Supply/Baby Care Center, basicallly on a "side street" that leads to First Aid.

Well I loved Being there for New Years Eve but the fog wasn't a problem for the Believe in Holiday Magic the view was excellent (I broke out in song and decided not to post the vid on you tube) but the most special thing happen after the fireworks during white Christmas someone proposed and people cheered and Disney Tech people put spotlight on them it was so nice to see that happen but the NYE Fantasy in the Sky Fireworks were affected by the fog but it was still fun to here and see the effects on the castle. Traffic on the way home was a nightmare and the trams were even worse I walked all the way to the Mickeys Parking Lot I got there at 7am so i was parked outside the the garage so we didnt have to walk all the way to the end
