One-Disney, Plenty of Mr. Six's and Civil War recreations
First off, while we have plenty of news to get to, this is also a personal "shock" test, as I am officially 49 years old today, and currently watching the Late Night with Conan O'Brien show, which is the second to last show from New York. We will get to that in a minute, after I mention the fact I am still in shock about getting Married.....
It seems like yesterday that I attended David Letterman's Late Night 7th Anniversary special at Universal Studios Hollywood (back when he was on NBC). The best memory of the event was Paul Shaffer and the band performing during the commercial breaks (and I got to attend both tapings), they really were the crowd favorites. Alas, it was filmed back in 1989...
Sticking with the "personal" memories, my father is well known and is in international business, which created a lot of opportunities to visit Theme/Amusement Parks as a kid. Heck, I grew up with SeaWorld, which is 4 years younger than I am.... But I can still remember the Charlie the Tuna AA that introduced the Mermaids, and seeing Shamu in a VERY small pool swimming to the William Tell Overture.
As a Coaster Enthusiast, I still list my "home" park as Belmont Park in San Diego. I am proudly a native San Diegan, actually my parents lived in Ocean Beach when I was born.
History Of San Diego's Giant Dipper
I could spend a lot of time listing all the unique things at Belmont Park, SeaWorld San Diego, or even the Miniature Golf course in Pacific Beach offered... But these are great memories, and if you are interested, maybe I will share a few of them tonight at the Cove Bar at 6 PM.
But we need to get to the "news" and "One-Disney"... and guess what, this won't be a "happy" column this week...
Jay Rasulo gets his wish, "One-Disney"
While Al Lutz will have a great "insider" article here at MiceAge next week, we need to bring up the news story here. Disney announced some major restructuring and elimination of jobs "behind the scenes"

Alas, there are some major differences between the two resorts in the US, Disneyland is a "locals" park, with the majority of attendance coming from guests that can drive to the park and return home on the same day, while in Orlando, Walt Disney World is mostly folks that stay for multiple days and requires a much different strategy to bring folks to the parks.
We have already seen things like Merchandise being "merged" with a single label for both parks on things like plush... What will be next?
Alas, a lot of folks will lose their jobs, which is a shame, but what will it mean to The Disneyland Resort... Time will tell, but I am worried about the possible changes.
Mr. Six to return to Six Flags
OK, do I have to admit I have a Snow Globe that features Mr. Six and plays the We Like to Party song... (Could that be my first dance at my wedding next January
Oops, Lisa says NO!
But the LA Times is reporting that he will be returning to entertain folks at Six Flags parks...

Running out of Beer, a major crime at the Anaheim GardenWalk...

Cinema Fusion, the only Orange County movie theater that serves beer and wine, does no advertising and has yet to put up a sign outside of the mall, so some people don't know it's there, said David Moranville, the assistant manager. Still, the over-21 screening rooms sometimes are so crowded that they run out of beer,
"I think they probably thought, we will build it, they will come," Stone said.
Across the courtyard, club-goers line up regularly to pay around $20 cover for the Heat Ultra Lounge, which sometimes draws celebrities, including Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee.
On the bottom level, the upscale 300 Anaheim bowling alley routinely has weekend waits for lanes, said Tristan Stone, general manager. But he had hoped for more business and that restaurant-goers along Katella would head deeper into the mall.
I am a big AGW fan, and think it is a great addition to the Anaheim Resort Area, and I think this article written by Sarah Tully shows that it is doing well in a tough economy.
Sally May wants YOU!

Had a chance to check out the new Laughing Stock Show held INSIDE the Golden Horseshoe as a replacement for Billy Hill and the Hillbillies on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The show is "plussed" by adding Michael, one of the Coke Corner Pianists.
And the show starts and ends with the classic Golden Horseshoe Revue Theme song, a great blast from the past...
But the vast majority of the show is still the traditional Laughing Stock schtick..... and as always, TOO Much Sally May

Thanks for the link on the Civil War Encampment. The group my daughter reenacts with, Oak Street, canceled due to concerns about the weather. There is a another reenactment coming up in the area, though. May 29-31 at El Dorado Park in Long Beach. This one will have actual battles with cannons and horses and stuff.

I am so happy Mr. Six is coming back! I just started getting nostalgic over his commercials recently and now is the perfect time to bring him back. And I know this is an unpopular notion, but I just haven't liked the entertainment in the Golden Horseshow since 1994. I miss the Jamboree and Revue and the acts they have in there just seem like "filler" to me. They are not bad, but they just aren't enough for such a long and proud tradition in that place.Posted 02-20-2009 at 08:02 AM by Athlonacon

I can't believe it's Conan's last Late Night show tonight! I also can't believe I never made it out to New York to see him in his little studio 6A. It was a dream of mine since I first fell in love back in '98, so tonight is going to be pretty rough. At least I'll have the soothing sounds of the White Stripes to comfort me.
Anyone gonna camp out for tickets to his first show in LA on June 1st? That might be something I could actually swing...Posted 02-20-2009 at 09:34 AM by PhantomBlot

More attempts to "Florida-ize" DL will probably be forthcoming. Pity.
I sometimes think FL thinks guests have no taste - have you seen the atrocities hanging from the lampposts along Main Street lately? Maybe that kind of junk flies in Florida, I don't know. Reminds me of the stuff they tried to put around the entry tunnels at DL a couple years ago, and we all know how well that went over.
What FL doesn't seem to get is that the immersive environments of the park are special enough, and do not need the architectural equivalent of marketing-designed product packaging on top of them.
I hope this reorg moves the central decision-making back to California, who's been doing it longer. But I doubt it will.Posted 02-20-2009 at 01:29 PM by Morrigoon
