Signs of the Times

Image: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NB7Bwdam9SY/SohoKL1NOXI/AAAAAAAAC1E/q8hqgFHU65A/s200/adv+outpost.jpg ...

After our last trip to Walt Disney World in February, I returned with some surprising revelations: Disney's Hollywood Studios was wonderfully themed, and my once beloved Animal Kingdom was actually now at the bottom of my Florida park list.

Most every visit after the opening of the Studios in 1989, left me with the strong impression that the park was just a jumbled mess of structures without reason for placement, thus breaking the beautiful functionality at layout that was initially designed.

Certainly in its purest form, both the Magic Kingdom and Epcot reamined true to their design roots. Disney's Hollywood Studios, however, had fallen prey to lack of a master plan and a true visionary to guide its development and growth.

As I discovered. these facts did not change the park from having an abundance of beautiful detail- if you looked for it. One of the more obvious places was in the signage found everywhere I looked.

So, here's part two of my gallery of sign photos.
The small Indiana Jones Adventure Outpost sign(top) effectively captures the nature of the film's excitement. Although somewhat predictable, the play on the compass background, stylized airplane, and iconic logo all come together quite well.
The most imposing and attention grabbing building in the park, The Hollywood Tower Hotel, home of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, has signage high above which quickly identifies the mood of the attraction. Or is it the lightning scarred remains behind it and the sounds of screaming from the inside the long abandoned elevator shaft that give the tower its powerful drawing power?
Just down the way, a giant guitar announces we've reached the G-Force Records studio and Rock and Rollercoaster starring Aerosmith. The less noticed and much smaller sign for the shop around the corner, Rock Around the Shop, is no less effective in capturing our attention.
Not every sign is at eye level or higher. Just outside the shop, a drainage cover in the street also announces the building owned by G-Force, its circular shape mirroring the compact disc- or record, for those of you still familiar with the old school method of playing music.

Herein lies a lesson for us Disney park lovers and those who are newbies to them: Look everywhere for detail! The Imagineers love to place layer upon layer to acheive the ultimate effect in transporting guests from the everyday world. Even in the rightfully criticized California Adventure and Walt Disney Studios Paris, there is detail to be found and signage worth noting-and soon enough, more attactions that are truly Disney quality! Watch for the signs- they are everywhere!

Image: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NB7Bwdam9SY/SlkgAux_ygI/AAAAAAAACso/3A3j5e02eDs/s200/100_2907.JPG ...

It was the opportunity of a lifetime. Yet, it was one I wasn't really sure I'd ever take.

My previous trip to Asia was well over a couple of decades ago. I was much younger, much more innocent, and much more hopeful about the world we live in. Flying did not have the security issues that are now in place. However, the opportunity was there, and I knew I had to go.
Prior expectations had made me think this trip would fulfill a long growing desire to go to Tokyo Disney Sea and experience the gorgeousness of this first class and best Imagineered Disney Resort. I even thought I might throw in a day at Hong Kong Disneyland as well as tour that magnificent city. But God had other plans.

Through some mutual friends, I was encouraged to take a group of folks to Central Asia. Our purpose there would be to care for the children of Christian leaders and pastors from five nations gathered for a time of rest, refreshment, and training. We would be gone for two weeks. I didn't want to go without my wife, who could not get the time off. Deep inside, I knew I was being selfish. All my talk about making a difference in the world, and now was another opportunity to do it, and I was ready to pass it by. What a hypocrite! I decided to go and put my money where my mouth had been- and in a whole new way.

We would take a group of fourteen: two young adults, one being my youngest daughter, and I would lead the trip. After many more applications than we ever thought we would see, me and our church leaders carefully prayed and sorted through them, ultimately choosing five teen girls, one more young adult, and four women and one man to join us. These were seasoned veterans in working with kids. The schedule with taking care of 60 kids- with only a couple of English speakers- would be demanding: two weeks at two sessions each day, 9am to 1pm and again from 7pm to 9pm.

The expense would be astronomical for all of us- about $3700 each, but we were committed to going. And we wanted to send money to these leaders to help them get to the conference as well. We each had to commit to paying our own way in full if no money came in. Big dreams, seemingly few resources.

The leaders of our church had decided that we had to fundraise outside the church. We would be doing a one-time all church offering, so they didn't want us to also approach our small congregation personally. We agreed and began doing our personal fundraising from family and friends.

After going down my Christmas card list, I thought of a man I knew who was fairly well off and very generous to causes which benefited children and furthered the cause of Jesus to reach the world. The problem was we hadn't crossed paths in eight years, and I didn't even know if he still lived in the state. I decided I couldn't contact him just for money as I did not want to take advantage of him. The good relationship we had in the past was more important. But I promised God if I ran into him, I would talk to him about the trip and the funds we needed. My daughter and I decided we would fundraise together and sent our letters out.

Two months went by. My daughter and I each paid for some of our expenses out of pocket. Family sent us most of the money that came in, but Lauren and I needed an additional $5000 between the two of us. Time was short, and our entire team was experiencing the same thing. One of our team members had received only one hundred dollars. What were we thinking?

About six weeks prior to our departure in June, I was busy in a meeting at my local coffeehouse. Who walked up to my table? My very generous friend I had not sent the letter to! His words: "I have been thinking about you the last few weeks and couldn't get you out of my mind!" I replied I had been thinking about him as well. If he only knew! We set up some time to meet the following week.

When we met, he shared some thoughts as to why had been thinking about me. Then he asked why I had been thinking about him. Before I answered, we realized he lived on the far west side of town, and I was on the far east side. He rarely came to my end of town, yet there he was for a business meeting at my coffeehouse at the same time and exact same day as my meeting. Wow!

He asked again why I had thought of him. Drawing on his good sense of humor, I said, "I'm going to ask you to give me money!" He smiled and asked for the story. His eyes lit up. He wrote me a check for $5000! I about passed out, but thanked God for him being so faithful.

Our church finally took its special offering, another $14,000. You must understand that we are a small church of less than one hundred families and are very "middle class" at best. This was a huge sacrifice. At the end of the week, another surprise. An anonymous donor gave us another $11,000! By the time we left, our entire team's way was paid for, and we were able to send almost $20,000 to the overseas pastors and leaders and their families!

Our departure day finally arrived, almost 7 months since the trip first came into our minds for consideration. Our flights took us from Denver to Frankfurt to Istanbul to our destination in Central Asia. From there, just another four hour or so bus ride to our final location. Nine thousand miles each way and over 20 hours of flight time. This would be home for my daughter Lauren and I and our team of 11 more for the next two weeks. (One man had to drop out at the last minute.)

The long bus ride gave us a chance to survey the landscape. The local people live in various types of homes. Some were the traditional yurt, some cinder block buildings and others more common shantys as would be found in Tijuana or Juarez, Mexico. Just the trip revealed much about the country and its people. Farming was rarely done by modern machinery. More often, we would see people in the fields using the traditional tools of sickles and rakes.

The region was mountainous and beautiful. The lengthy drive up the bumpy old road passed by many, many strands of cottonwood trees, red poppies, and fields of lavender.

A few other images are stuck in my mind. People riding donkeys. Children in colorful outfits with beautiful faces. Abandoned government projects. The gravesites and the small mosques with tin roofs and spires. There were no Christian churches or symbols to be found as almost all of the population is Muslim, and Christians are less than 2%. There is a segment that is viewed as being the old “state church”, where the message of Jesus' redemptive work on the cross and His resurrection is not taught, only the message of treating others well. A social gospel without its power or primary message! Yet even these small gatherings meet quietly in homes.

Above- Muslim gravesites of the wealthy

The purpose of our trip became multifaceted about two weeks before we departed. Yes, we brought a team to care for the children of these leaders, but our Senior Pastor’s wife and I were both asked to do intensive coaching for several of these young leaders and pastors. I was disappointed to not work with my team and particularly my daughter, but little did I know this would become the highlight of the trip for me.

Additionally, our two young adults, Lauren included, and a slightly older but young at heart woman, would be doing evening training time for the many teens in attendance. This was in addition to doing the ministry to the kids. Topics would include worship, discipleship, spiritual warfare, and living a life of holiness. They would get terrific feedback from the teens as each person taught once each week. All of us would have one day off, a Saturday in between the two weeks worth of the conference sessions. (This ended up being a great day, with a visit to the local market and a busride through town.)

We were to serve in an area that was considered closed to Christians with new laws in effect, so even teaching the kids about Jesus was illegal. We were all closely watched by security who patrolled the area, our unattended bags were searched, and our email was read by the authorities before it was sent out.

Due to the division of labor, I would not see too much of my daughter, as I would spend most of my time in the conference itself, leading discussion groups and later doing much one on one coaching. In addition to the conference times and discussion groups, my assignment was to meet with each man in my group at least 3 times for two hours each session. This meant many hours of personal coaching, but almost all of the men wanted more time with me than that, and I was happy to oblige these amazing guys. I also met two other men with whom I struck up a friendship and spent many meals and off hours with them as well.

In essence, our journey really is a story about the people.

The men I coached are really amazing. These are incredible young men, each with stories and ministries varied and impressive. All but one of my six new friends, were deserted by their fathers when they were small children. All are first generation Christians, converting from Islam. I would like to tell you a bit of their stories as the best way to share what the Lord is doing in Central Asia.

One young man and his family live in another closed country. He came to know Jesus at college age because of the local “English Club”. At 21, he planted his first church. In a country where the average church size is 40, his church plant grew to 300. He is also a worship leader and has recorded 5 discs, including the first local language worship Christmas season CD. They must meet fairly in secret and have to close windows and doors so the worship music doesn’t leak outside. On the way to the conference, he and his family had to reroute as bombings had closed the border, killing many. “Such is life" he told me.

Another young man was the first man I met and one that I would also spend much coaching time and off time with. He came to Christ at 16, then shared the gospel with his three best friends, all Muslim as well. They also believed. When the four of them entered university a year later, they prayed God would use them to reach the freshmen class- and He did- everyone of them in his division became committed to Christ. He is quite the evangelist!

Currently, at 26, he is head of a local ministry in a major central asian city. Two months ago, he started a website to reach Muslim students. In two months, ten thousand visits yielded 600 conversions. He is busy following up with them and connecting them to mostly underground Christian churches. He is currently praying about opening a student center to build more relationships as the universities are now closed to religious activity. In my heart of hearts, I believe God is going to use him powerfully to change the face of Central Asia.

Our evangelist spent an evening with our team, sharing his story and then praying for us. We, in turn, prayed for him. Our teens were visibly impacted- and our prayer time afterward birthed a few new missionaries, I believe.

Our larger group sessions were full of questions- mostly mine, actually- as I wanted to learn more about life as a Christian in an area of the world where real persecution happened. I learned much about simplicity and joy- and the willingness to truly believe that to live is Christ and to die is gain, as the Apostle Paul wrote. I listened, I prayed, I cried, I hugged and supported- but I gained so much more than I gave during those long hours each day!

Another young man is equally gifted and impressive. In common language, before his conversion, he would be best described as a big thug- a troublemaker, someone who you wouldn’t want to meet! With a degree from the local sports academy, he is in charge of communications for a different outreach in Central Asia.

His group is in charge of distribution of pamphlets, Bibles, videos, newsletters, websites and blogs, and an interactive ministry where he and his team of eight personally correspond to thousands of Muslims by mail, those who have questions about the Christian faith but without acess to the internet. Just a great guy!

He is one smart guy- with deep insights into the Scripture. I learned more about the parable of the prodigal son from him than anyone else in over thirty years of studying the Bible. He and his wife and two sons have a desire to open an internet café to build relationships and share the gospel. Oh yeah, this is only his day job, as he is also the pastor of a growing church!

Here's another story. This guy was a professional sports figure. Once he converted to Christ, the men of his village pulled him out of his home and beat him to a pulp because he would not recant his faith. Then, they stripped him of his papers, forcing him to begin a new career. This occurred in an “open” country, one supposedly friendly to Christianity! He and his wife and five children work together in a ministry to young professionals.

Above- "God loved the world He created and when men walked away, He sent His only Son Jesus to die on the cross; when our trust is put in Him, we are at peace for eternity as all the questions about who we are and the wonders of life are only answered in Him."

Interestingly, there was a common theme among a few of these men when the subject of Islam came up. Almost all of them spoke of their upbringing, the hopelessness of that faith. The message of Jesus, God in the flesh reaching down to humanity out of love and dying for our sins on the cross had such a powerful impact versus the god of Islam who demands perfection to be good enough to reach him. They shared how the Muslim world intends to take over by sheer population growth. Islamic missionaries are very active in Central Asia, and there is a rising and open persecution of those Muslims who convert to Christianity. Yet, in spite of threats both spoken and acted upon, these young men choose Christ and live to share his redemptive message!

We shared "heart" stories as well, speaking about our marriages and our families, our struggles as men to live lives that would be pleasing to God- not because we had to but because we wanted to. One day, I was finally asked about what it is like to be a Christian in America. Instantly humbled and more than a little embarrassed, I explained we were spoiled by our freedoms and the abundance of material wealth. One of my new friends, sensing my growing shame, reminded me that those from the United States bring 93% of their support and how grateful they were for us!

This mindset was evident everywhere I went and with everyone I spoke. In fact, when I departed after two weeks, my suitcase was filled with gifts for me and my wife (for letting me go for two weeks!)

These guys humbled me by their love, generosity, and their willingness to really suffer for the sake of Jesus and his message. Some of them live on as little as $400 per month for a family of four, but in other regions, it is as expensive as living in the United States! As newer local missionaries, they are still building support- and simple needs such as a car, are still on their prayer list.

One more amazing story to give you a flavor for the life of a Christian here.

It is of my encounter with a young man who captured my heart. His first and middle name actually means Genghis Khan! And even though he is a gentle and kind man, he is a mighty warrior like his namesake. Now 28, he also came to Christ through English Club as a very young man. With a degree in engineering, he gave it up and now works with a ministry in the southern regions trying to reach students. But his heart is for the people of Afghanistan. He takes his missions trips to war zone areas there. He plans to one day bring his family of a willing wife and three sons to live there full time, sharing Jesus in this closed country. Explaining he knew he may lose his life for the sake of Christ, his reply was it was no longer his life to live but Christ's in him. No bravado, just simple humility. To this day, I get choked up when I think of him and his tender, tender heart.

My friend told me Americans- and American soldiers- are really liked in Afghanistan. Since they are a draw, he’d like to see someone come to help him there. So, one of our team members is planning to return in the fall to Afghanistan to help him spread the gospel.

My brave young friend was one of the men I met the first night of the conference. We were at a table together and hit off immediately. Although he was not in my group to coach, we spent many hours together discussing the Lord, praying a lot and crying- mostly me- as I was so touched by his willingness to risk his life for the sake of Jesus. Our last night in our departure city before we returned home, he gave us a tour of the city and spent the entire day and evening with us until our flight departed in the wee hours of the morning. He also shared his story with the team, and they fell in love with him as well.

These are only stories of the men I have mentioned! There are many more.

As for the conference itself, the speakers were no less impressive: a four degree professor from one of the most prestigious east coast universities who gave it up to serve the cause of Jesus in full time ministry, and a professor from a European university who shares Christ with his students off hours. Both are passionate men for Christ, with a heart to bring the truth to men and women of university age. And to worship in multiple languages to the songs of Chris Tomlin and David Crowder was quite the experience! Christians truly are one in the Lord.

Let me conclude by telling you that I am so thankful and humbled. The experience has made me rethink what it means to be a believer in Jesus and how seriously I live out my faith. Questions fill my head: How much of what I have and do really has eternal value? Am I also willing to give my life in exchange for eternal life in Jesus? What does it mean to really believe in America? And on and on. I do know obedience is the key regardless of what situation any of us find ourselves in.

I do not know what this experience means for my life going forward, although I do know I have many new lifelong friends! (I did text my wife this message: “Love the people, glad to be here. No, I do not want to move!”) I have already received multiple emails from these guys, asking to stay in touch and to pray for me! And I do pray for them.

What a gift to be able to have this experience and to watch the hand of God work through such devoted and compassionate young men. Kind of reminds me of the disciples Jesus left behind after his resurrection.

The trip I never expected down a road less traveled has brought me to a crossroads on my journey with Jesus. May it bring good fruit.
"The Happiest Place on Earth" had a bit of a glaring problem. At least it was obvious to the suits watching the park and its traffic patterns. Marc Davis' sweet but amusing Country Bear Jamboree seemed to have run its course with park visitors. Numbers continued to decline.

The attraction occupied a big and beautiful wooded piece of real estate at Disneyland, just around the bend from the Haunted Mansion. It wasn't front and center as in the case of the attraction's location at Walt Disney World's Frontierland, but it was still a substantial chunk of the very small original kingdom. What to do?

The Imagineers with a soft spot for the attraction began coming up with some new concepts to save the Hillbilly bruins. Among the considerations were a small flume type attraction and a silly roadrace. Ultimately, even the terrific "Critter Country 500" with its rending by Christopher Merritt, couldn't save the bears from a quick and out of place swap out with another little cub. The singing bears were now only to be found in Tokyo Disneyland and at Florida's Magic Kingdom. Oh, Pooh!
First branded with the MGM tag, and now without it, Disney's Hollywood Studios is a park with some wonderful theming and a great variety of attractions. It's history is scattered with a variety of additions and changes both excellent and poor. However, with new leadership, there is much promise ahead. With that said, I'd like to focus on the park as we discovered it upon our first visit.
Debuting officially this day in 1989, The Disney-MGM Studios was the crowning jewel during a season of incredible and unprecedented growth at Walt Disney World in Florida. My first visit was just two weeks after opening, and I couldn't wait to experience a brand new Disney park...

The Animal Kingdom team continued to grow as the models and paintings took more and more space in Imagineering’s offices. The group’s hard work and brilliant design paid off. After five years of effort, the plans and funding were approved. The park was announced to the public in June of 1995 with the expected Disney fanfare. The official opening day would be April 22, 1998- Earth Day, an intentional choice that strongly communicated this was a Walt Disney World park designed for a young and conservation-minded fan.

With the mention of live animals, activist groups were quick to jump on the news, denouncing Disney’s plans as evil, long before any of them had enough information to realize great care had been taken. Disney had chosen to work with the foremost experts of the animal care field in developing environments and programs before unseen in the zoological community. (In actuality, few protesters arrived on opening day, much to the relief of the company and its press agents. My personal hunch is that many of these same folks are now among the park’s biggest fans!)
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is as vast and overwhelming a project as EPCOT Center...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Miracle On The Hudson’ Touches Lockheed Martin Family

Having recently started his first fulltime job after college, IS&GS-Defense hardware engineer Chris Rooney was enjoying a break. He had taken a week off from his Battle Management and Communications job in Colorado Springs, Colo., to spend time in New York City with friends.
That relaxing week came to a jolting end on January 15.

Rooney and girlfriend Karin Hill were among the 155 passengers and crew aboard US Airways Flight 1549, which landed safely on the Hudson River after a bird strike severely damaged the aircraft’s engines shortly after takeoff.

"As the more experienced flyer, I remember explaining to Karin about what normally happens on takeoff in order to calm her anxiety of flying," Rooney recalled of their pre-flight activities. "I find that aspect a little ironic now because three minutes into the flight, I definitely ran out of explanations as to why the aircraft was obviously maneuvering off course and losing altitude. But I do remember telling her that we must be heading back to the airport."

What we all know now but Rooney didn’t know at that time was that the crippled airplane could not return to the airport—nor could it land at another airport. Capt. Chesley Sullenberger decided the only option was to land on the Hudson River.

"The jolt that violently shook the airplane, plus a quick look out the window, made me realize that we were headed toward the water," Rooney said. "I had heard of water landings before, and the airplane’s approach seemed in line with what I’d read. But my technical mind didn’t have much time to think any further when the captain told everyone to ‘brace for impact’."

After he heard those chilling words, Rooney said, the landing was extremely hard. "Karin and I said a prayer for a safe outcome. Then we were immediately thrown forward when we hit the water. But it was not nearly as bad as I had thought it would be for as fast as we were going."
The adrenaline was flowing as Rooney and Hill followed other passengers up the aisle to the emergency exits in the front of the plane. Seated in row 18, they didn’t recall hearing any directions from the flight staff or hearing anyone in the back of the plane, which they later learned was filling up with water. Describing the scene as surreal, he said that "everyone seemed to be calm and took time to help one another to get out of the plane.

Pictured: Rooney and Hill cling to the exit doorsill of Flight 1549 (pictured above in front of the first "S" of the US Airways logo. Hill is wearing a light colored shirt and Rooney a dark shirt).

"Many people were able to get into rafts or were standing on the wing. The right engine was still attached to the wing when we approached the exit," he said. "It was weighing down that side—so much so that we were in the water. We ended up balancing on the exit doorsill with water up to our waists at times. This raised the biggest question in our minds — how long will we have to be in the near-freezing water?"

Rooney recalled a family of four that he and Karin assisted into the safety rafts. They also passed an 18-month-old child along those waiting on the wing to help the mother as she got into a raft. The rescue teams were on the scene within minutes of the landing, beginning with the ferry boats that headed directly toward the downed plane. The sight of the boats brought comfort to most of the passengers who were stranded on the wings or were in the water. Within 15 to 20 minutes, each passenger had been plucked out of the icy waters and loaded onto the ferries that quickly headed to shore and the waiting ambulances.

"Our ferry went to the New Jersey side," Rooney said. "We decided to get checked out at the hospital since my hands and lower body were extremely cold and we wanted to ensure that once the adrenaline wore off, we wouldn’t have any lingering injuries. Once we were cleared to leave, the US Air team was amazing in getting us lodging, clothing, shoes, food — the necessities for our overnight stay."

Rooney’s father, a commercial airline pilot, had flown to New York from Hawaii when he learned the plane had gone down. After a quick call to Rooney’s mom, his dad was on his way to help his son.

"That evening, seeing him and our New York friends gave us an amazing, comforting feeling," Rooney recalled. "It was as if all the stress of the day dissolved when I saw him. It was just a relief to know that we survived and were here to tell the story. Karin and I joke now that the next time we get on an airplane, we should read the emergency card. We both wished we had grabbed the yellow life vests under our seats.

"We are truly grateful for being alive, for having supportive family and friends, and for having a strong faith in God. We’d like to express our sincerest gratitude to the flight captain, to whom we all owe so much, the US Air 1549 crew, US Air personnel, NYC ferry workers, and all the emergency responders on the scene."

For most, the picture of passengers standing on the wings of an airplane as it slowly sinks into the icy Hudson River is hard to forget. With the recent crashes of a single-engine plane in Butte, Mont., and Continental flight 3407 in Buffalo, N.Y., Rooney said he turns to his faith for grappling with questions about surviving the "The Miracle on the Hudson."

Rooney said when it comes to flying, especially the takeoff and landing, he and Hill still have anxiety. Plus, he said, sleeping doesn’t come easy. "I think I had some post-traumatic stress. But I know that I must be on Earth for a reason. "I find some comfort in knowing we have a purpose in life — I still don’t know what it is — but I’m grateful to God for giving us this opportunity to live out that purpose."
----------------------------

Danny Gokey- Nice guy, great voice, warm smile. Totally authentic. I like him, but why don’t I think he’ll go the distance? Must be song choice. "PYT" was terrific, but it has been a mixed bag since. Very, very solid. I’m rooting for him to hit the top three. Yes, sometimes, nice guys do finish first.

Adam Lambert- Last night’s performance showed a delicate phrasing reminiscent of a young George Michael. Definite stage presence, but he is a bit difficult to watch since his Elvis look a couple of weeks ago. I keep thinking kd lang here. Is America ready for its first gay idol? Probably, we’ve had them before- just didn’t always know it up front!

Kris Allen- He keeps getting better. Terrific voice and growing confidence. Knows how to "play" with the songs, changing each one to make it his own. Maybe last night’s Don Henley cover wasn’t his best- it was original- but give the kid a break. It was his first average performance so far. He may not end up the top dog, but he’s got my vote for best and most versatile voice.

Matt Giraud- Too cool. To tackle Stevie Wonder and give his song a new swing and lift it never had- wow! I’ll buy this song. Growing in confidence as a performer. A family friendly young Justin Timberlake. Give the man a contract.

Allison Iraheta - Once I heard she was going to cover the classic Bonnie Raitt song, I said, "If she can show some restraint with this, it will be amazing." She did- and finally won me over by showing she is more than a one trick rocking horse.

The rest: Lil Rounds, it’s time to go. Powerful voice, nice gal, but predictable. Anoop, above average potential with the right producer and image maker. Scott, hate to say it, but he should have departed a long time ago. Nice, talented folks, but none are in the league of those above.

My friend Rick is a gifted musician and writer. Below is a wonderful piece that makes great sense to me, especially with Easter just around the corner.
_____________________________________

The person of Jesus is widely misunderstood in our culture at large and sometimes within segments of the Church as well. He is neither the self-actualized man of New Age philosophy nor simply the gifted teacher of liberal theology, neither the politically correct ambassador of post-modern tolerance nor the bigoted judge of repressive authoritarianism.

He is the passionately personal Creator God who, motivated by love, miraculously entered creation and creature-ness with us to build a bridge of reconciliation back to Himself. In living as a man among us, He revealed His divine nature in terms accessible to our human sensitivities. In dying as a perfect sacrifice for sin, He tore down the barriers that divided us from His own purity. In rising from death, He charted the single course that bridges the gap from this preliminary chapter of life into an eternal existence with Him in a setting He once termed “paradise”.

In the 30+ years between His birth and crucifixion, He demonstrated an earthiness surprising to religious observers without compromising purity or truth. He preferred unsophisticated companionship and offered bold but gentle honesty to His friends. He spoke to communicate, not beguile or impress. Some considered Him crude, common, stubborn, delusional, confusing, arrogant, and undisciplined. To others, He was hope, truth, purpose, clarity, healing, joy, safety, freedom, and life itself. Though no one understood completely, He was ready to reveal Himself to ones who would lay down pretension and humbly watch, listen, and eventually follow.

God’s revelation of Himself as Jesus Christ is surprising in its simplicity because by nature He is true and pure. It is the sophistication of our attempts to justify our patterns of resistance that make Him seem so complicated. He invites us to lay these patterns down—self-pretense and defense—to engage Him in the arena of unchanging truth, reality, and common sense. There, if we are willing to cease our own god-imitation, we can come to know the true God as Savior, Lord, Teacher, Counselor, and Friend.

His name is Jesus.

The most difficult part of this trip report is not avoiding the issue and saying what I need to say right from the start. I love Animal Kingdom- but I was totally bored and ready to leave the park by 2:15pm! If it's your favorite theme park at Walt Disney World, please read on and give my appraisal a fair shake before you judge me...

After a great two days, one at Epcot, one at Magic Kingdom (and one at Disney's Hollywood Studios yet to come), my wife and I were ready for a third great day- at Disney's Animal Kingdom. It's a spectacularly beautiful park, unique in many ways. (Cruise my blog for my "True Life Adventure" on the creation and evolution of this park. It's a multi part series.) This visit, it was the only park we got up early for. That should say much.

We hopped on the first bus of the day. I was feeling an adrenaline rush just thinking of riding Expedition Everest. I couldn't wait. I was also anxious to show my wife this park in a relaxed and unhurried manner.

Arriving in the parking lot, the sky was quite gray and the day felt "heavy". Walking through the gates into the park, it seemed as all was very quiet. The animals seemed still, and I couldn't hear (or see) any of the birds- just the sound of the small waterfall just past the entrance. This gave a very different first impression to what the day would be like. Misty, overcast, somewhat mysterious...

------------------------
I left the rest of my trip report and photos on my Insights blog! ;)

About a year ago, my wife and I renewed our contract with T-Mobile and were rewarded with four free airline tickets. We used one set to go to South Carolina, where we went to Charleston and Hilton Head, including the Disney Vacation Club there. (See my blog report for lots of pictures and details.) With two tickets left to use before March 1 and a very limited and mostly unappealing choice of locations, we chose to head off to Walt Disney World for four days sans kids. We booked our getaway in October. This was to be our first visit alone in two decades. (Not knowing we would be in California for Christmas - and at the Disneyland Resort at the time of booking.)

Having saved for a couple of years, we decided to splurge a bit and stay at one of the moderate resorts. After much discussion, we chose Port Orleans Riverside. Our last visit staying on the property was at All Star Sports in 2007- a great choice since we had our youngest son with us. Previously, we had stayed at the Caribbean Beach in 1989 when the price was an unbelievable $59 per night!

Mid-February was a new time of the year for a visit. We really didn't know what to expect aside from the fact we planned to take it easy, sleep in, eat at some nice restaurants, go swimming and enjoy the parks. What a great opportunity to get out of a Colorado winter and see some green landscape.

Arriving at 11:55pm into Orlando, of course we were glad to be making use of Magical Express to get to our hotel. The trip would end of taking two hours- arrival at 2am! We thankfully chose to carry on our luggage and felt quite bad for other folks who hadn't, as they wouldn't see their bags until morning.

-----------------
Rest of our Epcot Adventure is on my Insights blog: www.InsightsandSounds.blogspot.com

Stunt Show?

A recap: While I was searching for a graphic for my California Adventure post (3/20/08), I happened upon this interesting piece of concept art for Frontierland at Disneyland Paris. Look at the bottom right of the concept art above. It is labeled "EDL"-EuroDisneyland, not Walt Disney Studios. What's even more interesting is the name this graphic was given "Stunt Building Paris Western". Could it be? How seriously was a stunt show for Frontierland considered? Maybe our fellow Disney fan (and author of a great book, Disneyland Paris, From Sketch to Reality,) Alain Littaye at Disney and Morewould be happy to fill us in.

Recent Note from Alain before my return from WDW- (2/15/2009): "Recently , i found on the excellent Mark Taft Insights and Sounds web site this rendering below. It's labelled "EDL - for Euro Disneyland which means that this concept-art was done in the early 90's when the park was still called by this name. And it shows the facade of a stunt show arena envisioned for DLP's Frontierland - a "western" stunt show, of course.

In his article Mark was wondering "How seriously was a stunt show for Frontierland considered?" and hoped that i may have the answer as i am the one who wrote the book about the park.Unfortunately, i just discovered Mark's March 2008 article yesterday (!) and i am a little bit late for the answer! However, i asked Jeff Burke who was Frontierland's show-producer if he ever heard about this project. And here is his answer:"I don't recognize this specific illustration, but there were discussions, after the Park had opened in 1992, to build a stunt show arena where the Chapparal Stage now stands. The discussions of Frontierland's own stunt showplace ended when operations said it would be too much of a repetition of the "Buffalo Bill Wild West Show" in Downtown Disney."

Another former imagineer friend sent to me these additionnal infos: "There were a number of discussions concerning a live western show in Frontierland, including a small rodeo which was not done due to the strict animal protection laws in France. This is why the animals in the original petting zoo were moved behind a fence after opening so that the guests could only pet an animal when it approached the guest on its own.As to the stunt show, this was developed under the Entertainment department on their own rather than Imagineering which was probably why it was not well known. An outside consultant was brought in and I seem to remember a model might also have been done. It was essentially a comic gun fight with exploding buildings and such but, as Jeff said, it was cancelled because of the clash with the Buffalo Bill show. After that, the Chaparral stage came into existence to house any number of live entertainment shows."So, there we have the answer about this mysterious rendering. The park DID envisioned a stunt show in Frontierland, but they finally cancelled it because of the Disney Village dinner show - translate: if we have a stunt show in Frontierland, people won't come - and pay - for the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show.Although i must admit there is a kind of logic in their decision, i think it's a pity that a "western" stunt show don't exist in Frontierland instead of the Chapparal Stage. A western stunt show is a classic in theme parks - think about the Universal's Wild Wild West stunt show - and it would have give more life in the back of Frontierland..."

Thanks, Alain!

More 2nd Spoonful!

Creepy and delightful! My wife said it best upon our exit- “That was like a whole different attraction! I can’t believe Disney would take the time...

Creepy and delightful! My wife said it best upon our exit- “That was like a whole different attraction! I can’t believe Disney would take the time and expense to redo this for just a few months of the year!” I’ll say she hit the nail on the head. When Disney does it well, it stands high above its competitors in providing breathtaking experiences- and the management in California really knows how to please its audience and keep them returning all year round. (We’ll be seeing the new and improved Huanted Mansion in its original version in Florida in a month. Can’t wait. Watch for a future trip report.)

The compactness of Disneyland is a mixed blessing. Just around the (river)bend was Splash Mountain, our next destination. Yet because of it, the transition between the mansion and Critter Country is jarring, despite all attempts to ease us from one place to another. (In this man’s opinion, it is another area where Disneyland Paris excels. Each land feels so separate and distant from the others, a unique combination of enough land and excellent planning on the Imagineers part. Every Disney geek needs to see this park once to believe its beauty!) On the positive side, the smaller space demands creativity in planning expansion and gives “Walt’s park” an intimacy lacking in the other Kingdoms. Aspects such as landscaping take on a new importance, as tree and building placement becomes necessary tools to define and inhibit sightlines. (Something not well used or maybe even considered when designing California Adventure! There is hope this will change.)

Rounding the path into Critter Country was as if we journeyed outside the city to enter a whole new place. Even when it was Bear Country back in 1972, this area of the park has always enjoyed a unique feel. It is a beautiful segment of the park, providing a respite from wide open spaces and large crowds. There is nothing like it in Florida’s Magic Kingdom- and they are left worse off because of it. The restaurant on the river provides an additional retreat from the energy and pretty good food to boot. That said, let’s be honest here- Disney management made a huge mistake by ripping out all of the classic Country Bear Jamboree to put in a silly old bear. Don’t misunderstand. Pooh needs a place, and this area of the park needs a dark ride to delight the younger visitors. I just think one theater should have been spared, forcing a more creative use of the space to add a journey in honey pots- and satisfying the need for a little more history to exist in the park.

This small land was wonderfully and tastefully decked out in its Christmas best. We ventured under the Christmas tree hanging at the entrance to walk through Splash’s queue. Combining the funny little story, thrills, and fun, Splash Mountain reinforces why Tony Baxter is one of my most appreciated Imagineers. Our group left the attraction in various degrees of wet to drenched, both enjoying and thankful for the warm bright California sun. As we cruised back to Indy for a second ride, we took in the views. For the most part, Disneyland has aged well, (Tomorrowland being the sorry exception).
