Thanks for joining us again this weekend for our weekly trip around the world. This week we make a quick foray into Disneyland's New Orleans Square with Mark Gonzalez, then we're off to Paris with TDLFAN to visit Disneyland Paris. Next up is another chapter in Ian Parkinson's Adriatic Adventure and we finish up in Chicago at the zoo with sir clinksalot.

At DLP's Town Square, the Horse-drawn carriages have a separate area from the regular street to board guests on and off. This is unique to DLP's design.

Ian Parkinson took so many beautiful photographs of Venice, Italy during his Adriatic Adventure I'm breaking them up into two groups.

Venice, Italy

Venice (Italian: Venezia, Venetian: Venesia or Venexia) is a city in northern Italy, the capital of the region Veneto, and has a population of 271,251 (census estimate January 1, 2004). Venice has been known as the "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Bridges", and "The City of Light". It is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

The city stretches across 118 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers.*

We return to Chicago with sir clinksalot for a trip to the zoo.

Lincoln Park Zoo
Chicago, Illinois

Lincoln Park Zoo is a free zoo located in Lincoln Park in Chicago, Illinois. The zoo was founded in 1868, when the Lincoln Park Commissioners were given a gift of a pair of swans. In 1874, the swans were joined by a bear cub, the first animal purchased for the zoo. The bear became quite adept at escaping from its home and could frequently be found roaming Lincoln Park at night[citation needed]. The first bison ever born in captivity was born in Lincoln Park. Marlin Perkins, who later gained fame as the host of the television program Wild Kingdom, was director of the zoo from 1944 until 1962. Now, Lincoln Park Zoo is home to a wide variety of animals. The zoo includes polar bears, penguins, gorillas, reptiles, monkeys, and other species totalling nearly 1,250 animals. *

You can see just how close the city is to the zoo. Lake Michigan is just on the other side.

There was MUCH more of the zoo that we would have liked to see, but we had a wedding to get to!

Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool

The Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, formerly The Rookery, and also known as Lincoln Park Lily Pool, is an example of Prairie School landscape architecture designed by Alfred Caldwell at the north end of Lincoln Park Zoo (at Fullerton Parkway) in the Lincoln Park community area of Chicago, Illinois. It was designated a Chicago Landmark on November 6, 2002. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a National Historic Landmark on February 17, 2006. The lily pool had originally been built to cultivate tropical water lilies in 1889.*

Disneyland Paris is very beautiful, and I love the Italy pictures! My mom would be whining on how much she wants to go there if she saw them.

The Venice shots are beautiful. Thanks for bringing those up.

One correction from my photos: That would Lilo and Timon on the Character greeting Train photo. Not Stitch as mentioned. Sorry.

I suppose it is in a way, since it's inspired by the very 1950s artwork of Eyvind Earle.

There is nothing weird about DLP's castle. It is hands down the best castle ever built for a DL park. Full of details, with great indoor and outdoor theming, and quite unique.

(Oops — I was agreeing with the "space age retro" thing, not the "weird" part.)
