Disrespectful Guests During the Disneyland Flag Retreat

Has any of the other CM's here had to deal with impolite guests during the Flag Retreat? I've on two occaisions had to tell guests "I'm sorry, but I need you to quiet down or move over to the other side of the street". In on case, it the guest simply didn't know what was going on, and in the other, it was a group of rowdy teens goofing off.

The Disneyland Resprt takes the Flag Retreat very seriously and reverently. How do some of the other CM's here handle such guests?

    Really?

How does the Disneyland resort expect it's guests to behave seriously and reverently in regards to the USA when it has stripped almost every other vestige of Americana from itself that it once portrayed so proudly and respectfully? Where is America Sings? Where is America the Beautiful? Where is the homage to America at the end of the fireworks? Sure, they brought back Lincoln, but how do they expect us to take it seriously when we are greeted with a slap in the face by Miley Cyrus at the end of it? What a joke.

Things change. Disney still has its patriotism and National Pride, otherwise the military wouldn't get a discount on stuff, and over in Florida we wouldn't have the Hall of Presidents.

So we don't have America The Beautiful, or America Sings. But do remember that Disney has changed the way the land that housed both of those attractions over the years looks, and works theme-wise.

It's a lose-lose situation for Disney. No matter what. Fans want things to fit thematically. Well, with the Jules Verne style and theme they went with in the 90's, and prior to that, those attractions no longer fit. So you want them relocated? Where? Circle D ranch? the FoF arena? maybe thrown over for a tribute deal at DCA.

Point is: there's still patriotism shown through this park. Maybe not as much as it was before, but it's still there.

Guests will be guests. You'll always get the people that really have no respect for anything, and don't shut up for anyone. It's unfortunate, but that's the human race for you. So, props to the CM's who try to silence those guests so the rest of the people who do take something like this seriously, can fully enjoy their experience in the making.

Your response has nothing at all to do with the flag ceremony, you're just using this space to rant about attractions/shows that were modified or removed that represent America?

Whatever. Lets at least attempt to stay on topic, eh?

The vast vast majority of guests are either respectful of the flag retreat or just plain ignore/don't notice it. Those doofuses who act out, are the same ones who are obnoxious throughout the entire day. Just ignore them. If they are seriously acting out of hand (as with any situation) call security. Simple as that. Disney is not here to enforce reverence for the flag.

Re: Disrespectful Guests During the Disneyland Flag Retreat

First off Disney I presume's comment was completely ignorant and pointless. The flag retreat ceremony, pure and simple, is about the repsect to our flag and what this country stands for, freedom. It is also a tribute to our men and women who safeguard this nation, so we can enjoy the liberties we enjoy today. This has nothing to do with attractions. I make it a point to watch the ceremony if I am in the park with my wife at that time. Too many times, and this really irks me, I see people who do not show the respect that our flag deserves and the singing of the National Anthem. there are people who cannot take off their hats in respect or are goofing around. This is totally UN-American to me. By god, people, we are all fortunate to live in this land of the free, take a few moments out of your day to show a little respect to our flag and our service men and women for preserving our freedoms and way of life. Who knows, this might be incorrect, accoprding to those idiotic PC people. I am proud of our country and nothing will ever take away my respect for it.

Remember, this is a CM forum, so the question was directed at other CM's. You're correct that the vast majority of guests are respectful of the flag retreat, but the question I asked wasn't whether cast members on Town Square are there to "enforece reverence" for the flag or not. The question was how they do so. I myself have on occaision escorted diruptive guests away from the Flag Retreat. I'm simply wondering how other CM's handle disruptive guests.

I am CM, and that is how I answered the question. Guests creating a disturbance during the Flag Retreat is no different than at any other time. There is nothing required in the parks rules or guidelines for guests that say otherwise. So, as always, politely warn the guests that their behavior is distruptive. Then, if the behavior continues or is significant enough, call security. I have not found it necessary to do either during the Flag Retreat ceremony myself.

A reminder, especially to those whose posts have recently vanished: political discussions aren't allowed outside of the MiceChat Gold forums. They get too heated too easily. Obviously, this thread has some political underpinnings by nature, but we'd like to be able to leave it open. Please don't derail the thread with politically charged comments. Thanks.

Re: Disrespectful Guests During the Disneyland Flag Retreat

When I was a merchandise host on Main St, if you were in any of the shops or guide stands that could actually see or hear the flag retreat ceremony you were required to stop what you were doing and stand respectfully until it was over. Some guests would be surprised when you stopped ringing them up in the middle of a sale, but when you explained what was going on they usually joined in. Do they still do that, or do you just keep working? When I worked for the Angels, most people would stop and take their hats off during the playing of the national anthem and we would stop what we were doing, but there was always a few jerks who thought they were too cool to show a little respect. They were usually teenagers (it's always teenagers, isn't it?)

Re: Disrespectful Guests During the Disneyland Flag Retreat

When I worked at Disneyland as custodial and was put on main street, I never had any disruptive guests during flag retreat. I always seemed to have a good crowd who stopped and paid their respects. It made me very happy to see and I can't wait to go back to visit the park with my husband so we can watch the flag retreat together again.. only this time he will be saluting the whole time...

My apologies, I wasn't answering you specifically, but some comments by others who weren't cm's (whose posts appear to have been removed, and rightly so).

    Sorry for the confusion.

According to some friends of mine who are hosts in the area, they say yes (but they ususally complete the transaction they're in, out of courtesy). They tell me that they've never had a guest gripe about it.

Same here. You'd think there would be more issues, since guests are always in a rush or whatnot, but pausing ringing up transactions during the retreat never seems to be an issue. What helps is in some locations too, when the CMs give them the heads up they will be pausing during the ceremony.
