Bike the Golden Gate with Trekkie Dad on Memorial Day (May 26)

Trekkie Dad and his bike club friends invite you to join them on a Memorial Day bike ride along the San Francisco waterfront and across the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin County. This is a casual, "tourist paced" ride suitable for beginning riders looking for an unforgettable experience on a bike. We stop frequently for sightseeing and picture taking.

Our group takes BART from the east bay to the Embarcadero station and heads first to the Ferry Building, arriving at around 9:00. From there, we ride along the Embarcadero to Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf, and then to the Golden Gate Bridge, stopping frequently along the way.

Interested? Watch this thread for more details.

Re: Bike the Golden Gate with Trekkie Dad on Memorial Day (May 26)

Here are some pictures from our '06 Memorial Day ride. We always do a picture on Pier 39 with Alcatraz in the background.

And of course there is the shot near the Golden Gate Bridge.

On that day, some of us climbed to the top of the Marin Headlands.

We only go there if the riders feel up for the challenge. The hill climb is totally optional. Long before we get there, we get a pretty good idea of what the newcomers are interested in and capable of doing.

Here's a place we've been stopping at the last few years: The Wave Organ. Do you know where it is?

We've been doing this ride for a number of years now. But we never seem to tire of it.

Re: Bike the Golden Gate with Trekkie Dad on Memorial Day (May 26)

I've added a poll to this thread with some of the possible destinations after we cross the Golden Gate Bridge. Some of them can be combined on a single ride, so you may vote for more than one.

The final decision will be made by me and the other riders present on the day of the ride. Still, it's nice to know ahead of time where people might want to go.

If you don't have a bike, rentals are available at Blazing Saddles. We see a lot of tourists riding them. One year, a tourist from Australia joined us for much of our ride.

It will be a small group, probably no more than a dozen riders, and there will be plenty of time to kick back and get acquainted.

So far, no votes. I got a phone call from one of the other riders today, and she's suggesting we ride to Larkspur, taking the ferry back. We have not ridden to Larkspur before. I'm going to have to find my Marin bike map.

I'd just like to say, that looks like such fun! I remember being on a trolley tour in San Fransisco and having our driver poke fun at the cyclist climbing up to the golden gate bridge.
May your trip be safe, and enjoyable!

Maybe he wouldn't laugh so hard realizing we get to cross the bridge for free! Yes, there is a short get-your-blood-pumping climb on the approach, and the deck itself is higher between the towers. And then there's the wind. But despite the challenges, it's an absolute blast to ride.

While the bridge is free, the rest of the day requires a bit of change. BART fare from Dublin is $5.25 each way. If we take a ferry back to SF, the fare may be as much as $9.00. And then there's lunch at Bay Area prices. Of course, we could get by on Gatorade and energy bars, but we do this ride only twice a year.

If any MiceChatter decides to join us, send me a PM, and I'll reply with my cell#.

So far, I have no takers from Mice Chat. The weather promises to be cool--but we shouldn't have any significant rain. If there's a serious threat, we'll just cancel. (Never had to do that in the past.)
