Looks like the "official" website is operational now. I don't see anything esp. exciting or different.

Yet... I may join just to be a member of the Charter year...

Damn I need help...

And how many of those "Some of Our Favorite Musings From the BlogosphEAR!" quotes came from right here on MiceChat? Um?

$53 for shipping it outside the US... are they sending a ceremonial brick?

Well, I caved and joined the club for the charter year. I was not going to do it, but then I noticed the "certificate" that you get with it had some obscure characters...including my favorite, Gurgi. So, that sealed it for me...a very stupid reason to join, but there you go. We'll see what this thing amounts to over time though...I'm not at all impressed with the merchandise though, and frankly, don't feel like joining a club to buy more expensive stuff. I hope that there are some perks that make it worthwhile. Plus, we'll see what the special "gift" is. If it's like the WDCC, maybe it will be something nice.

Disney will charge an outrageous $75 for "membership."

The press release from Disney is now available here: Disney Announces "D23"

No way that I'd pay $75 for information that I already get here for free!

This is sort of like their crappy merchandise events where the charge you hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars just for the opportunity to buy their merchandise.

They have some pretty bad timing considering the economy.

I could not care less about the merchandise, so outside of the magazine (which looks nice, but I would have to see it first-hand), I'm not sure if there is anything in D23 for me.

Well, the membership may be steep, but I did the math, and if I just bought the magazines, it would be only $11 cheaper, and depending on whatever "gift" they send out, it may be worth it. Compare to the $60 you pay for WDCC and you get a sculpture and a publication that is more like a pamphlet than a magazine. So, it works out. It may not be the smartest thing, or the most timely thing, but we'll see what they do with what they have. I just hope they don't just abandon it in a couple years because they lose interest, like they've done with so many things in the past...

If they couldn't keep Disney Magazine going with the "Disney" name right on it, what do they think is going to happen with a magazine with a confusing name like D23?

I'd bet that most people will think that the Mag is written for 23 year olds who have $75 in their pocket.

They have really screwed this up already.

Well, I'm...disappointed. It really IS just a way to gouge some more money out of die-hard Disney fans. And of course, a way to sort of separate the sheep from the goats.
The magazine is pretty good, and I am sure I will at least buy that. I don't know if I'll join the club, really there aren't a lot of perks, are there? The opportunity to buy $800+ pens isn't something I need or want. The Disney Expo will be open to anyone and I imagine it's just another merchandising event anyway.
As for the website...honestly, I don't see Disney allowing the frank discussions we have here on any 'official' site. So it's just a place to get press releases from the company.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who actually took a step back from the PC once I saw the price for this thing. True, the magazine looks nice, but I agree with everyone else's thoughts in thinking Disney is making a mistake launching this when the economy is not doing so well. And quite frankly, this isn't much different from the WDCC in basically you're paying X amount of money to have an exclusive chance to give MORE money to the Mouse for stuff.

Magazine? Thumbs up. The idea of an special club? Very cool. Having to pay through the nose for all of it? Sorry, gotta say pass for me.

I wound up getting the magazine last week & was the one who leaked the first info regarding the contents of the magazine to distant creations & didn't realize what I was starting.

Anyway, now that I rushed out to get it & most likely will join- the 15.95 for the magazine was probably wasted since I'm sure I'll be getting the same thing in the mail when I join.

The magazine did disappear for the past 3 days from the B&N and reappeared today- I hope I didn't get them into trouble for posting so quickly since I'm a good customer of their cafe!

For real?!?!!

I was considering it as $75 is about £53 (at the moment) but sticking another £38 on top they can *ahem*.... keep it.

I'll pass as well.

In my experience, most "official" disney publications have been sanitized by their legal and marketing department, thereby gutting them of interesting information. You'll find better info here and on a couple websites, where the news isn't transformed by a team of lawyers into an article that looks like a promotional brochure.

I've read this thread

I've visited the 23 website

I read what they have to offer

I can say unequivocally, No. I am not 23.

Micechat Gold on the other hand.....

I haven't seen the magazine in person yet. Does it have advertising in it? If it does, then REALLY shame on Disney for charging so much. If the magazine does have advertising, then Disney should sell advertising space in the magazine and more people would be able to afford this exclusive club.
