It looks like they tried to get the magazines out to subscribers before they hit the stores. That is a welcome change.
I have to agree, I feel Disney seem to be doing a good job so far of dealing with the criticism that has surrounded the D23 launch. The mystery free gift is a nice treat for Members only, and I feel the content described for the second issue is much stronger than what we got in the first issue. I can only hope D23 will continue to improve as I do want it to be a suscess.

I agree, I hadn't seen this thread yet when I got the magazine and gift, and I was thrilled and surprised (I had no idea it was coming, Summer edition of the mag already?!).
I think they're making up for their past mistakes. (Getting the magazine out earlier, and like you said, winning us over with clever gifts true disney fans will probably enjoy) Additionally, for those of us who don't live near Disneyland/SoCal, and can't experience half of the events that occur, it's little touches like this that will keep people hooked, despite not being able to fully utilize their membership.

Spoiler
These style fans were actually pretty common back in the 50's and if you look closely at one of the pictures you can actually see a woman holding a similar fan. I believe this one is a replica of one given out to people at the park on opening day. If you hadn't figured out from the design the tabs lock together to add stability during "fanning". Pretty cool if you ask me.

I was really impressed with the new magazine and the surprise new gift. The gift leads me to believe that Disney really does understand their market, especially as it relates to D23. The gift was a mix of the nostalgia with a cool collectible idea. This gives me faith that D23 is def headed in the right direction.

I got my magazine and "prize" yesterday - both were very cool. I was really impressed with this issue - they did a beautiful job with it. I hope they continue to toss in surprise freebies and keep up the excellent work on the magazine.

The gift you guys are talking about reminds me of the Disney Treasures books, where you can pull the replica pictures and items out and look at them. Way cool! This is the kind of stuff I hang on to

I got mine in the mail today! I love the mag and the little gift. I took it over so my mom could see it and she was having so much fun "I remember this", "I forgot they had that". We had a good time looking it over at lunch.

Did you all see this:

Quote:
Lucky Duck Surprise for D23 Members!
D23 members... check your new issue of Disney twenty-three. To honor Donald Duck's birthday, 23 randomly selected members will receive an added surprise — an autographed photo of animator and character voice Tony Anselmo, who has voiced our beloved Duck since 1985!

Also, for those who want to know more about the free gift, the cat is out of the bag and D23 has posted official information. It was a nice little surprise with a bit of history behind it:

Oh wow! Lucky 23 people! I wonder if they'll do random selections for the next magazines as well?
