Talking Big D23 Summer - List of Events and Contests!

Big news from D23 today. They've answered the call from members for nationwide events and promotions this Summer and it looks to be quite a remarkable list of activities (many of which are free).

We've written about the D23 Summer series of events on the MiceChat front page HERE and invite you to read all about it.

With events that span a first look screening of the Pixar film UP, special evening at Epcot, Theatrical events in New York, Chicago, and Las Vegas, and lots of access to Imagineers, Disney company archivists, and the Studios themselves, this looks to be exactly what fans had hoped to see more of from D23 and we are thrilled and excited to see what comes next.

You'll want to review these events and find out about tickets right away. These are limited availability events.

    • May 28 - D23 “Up All Night” at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre (FREE) - D23 special screening of Pixar's new film - UP
    • May 31 - D23’s Flowers & Fireworks Celebration at Epcot (FREE with park admission). Special concert seating and priority viewing of Illuminations.
    • June 24 - D23’s Supercalifragilistic Night on Broadway - Celebrate Mary Poppins 1,000th performance on Broadway with special viewing and activities.
    • June 24 - D23 and Poppins Breeze into The Windy City - Premimum seats, merchandise discounts, backstage tour, Cast album and more.
    • June 27 - D23 and The Lion King Roar in Vegas - Special seating and tour.
    • June 27 & Aug. 15 - D23 Day at The Walt Disney Studios and Archives (FREE) - 2-hour tour of The Walt Disney Studios and Walt Disney Archives!
    • July 17 - D23 presents Disneyland, U.S.A. (FREE)

All of the events are detailed on our Front Page HERE but we are particularly excited about this last event at Disneyland:

(Anaheim, CA) -- Celebrate Disneyland’s 54th Anniversary with a special screening of Walt Disney’s recently restored 1956 “People and Places” featurette Disneyland, U.S.A., as well as a panel discussion including Imagineer Tony Baxter, Disney Legend and Chief Archivist Dave Smith, and Disney Studios Film Archivist Ed Hobelman. The event will take place at Disneyland’s Team Disney Anaheim Theater and will be followed by a D23 Member reception.
In addition, D23 will be giving away a vacation to the Mandaly Bay resort in Vegas for 2 to see the Lion King in Las Vegas! Details on how to enter the contest will be posted to D23 in early June.

It looks like quite a summer for D23 members and we look forward to hearing from all of you who are able to score tickets to these events. Visit D23 for more information on how to obtain additional information and tickets.

A tour of the archives?! Free UP screening!? Baxer on a panel at Disneyland!?

Awesome. Those white gloves have just stolen another $70 from my wallet.

I don't think that's a fair argument when 4 out of the 7 events are NOT in California. I respect your point of view, but I really think that this is a great schedule of events for the new D23 fan community. Most of these events are FREE. I'm really impressed and surprised. I'd have been happy with just the contest and one or two of these events. Not bad for a $75 membership fee!

D23 is certainly on the right track to win over more potential members with this series of events. And they haven't even announced the events for the Fall and Winter yet!

Just to let everyone know, we've got the full details posted on the front page, and a discussion going in the D23 forum. Since this is spreading around the site like wildfire, we'll use those two areas for discussions of these events!

Yep, I just got suckered into dropping another $80 into Disney's pocket.

But if they continue to have free events like this, then I'm totally okay with it. Hopefully space for these events isn't so limited that it will be impossible to get tickets reserved... I suspect Disney has planned these things out well enough to avoid a fiasco. But then again, you never know.

In anycase, I'm now officially a D23 charter member. Hopefully it'll be worth it.

Everything with regards to events has capacity limitations. Size, security and enjoyment factors are always considerations especially with Disney in my experience.

Theatres and the smallest major studio lot in the industry are going to certainly have to entertain relatively small groups. This of course makes the events even more exclusive and desirable. They'll all be overbooked, will probably limit a one-per-member opportunity to enjoy these various events and will make for terrific photos and video for the D23 site and additional membership sales tools.

Hope you make the list(s) MG!

Yeah, I expect the events to be limited... but I hope they plan to handle the reservations for these events in a suitable manner. We all know how Disneyland handles the Candlelight online reservations every year (YIKES!) ... hopefully D23 has a better system worked out....

So far, it looks like they're having you call to make reservations... If anybody has called and reserved their spot yet, I'd be interested in hearing how the process went.

As for photos and video, I really hope they allow camera at these events. The D23 site mentions nothing about cameras, so who knows what the policy will be... I'm sure it'll vary depending on the event, as I wouldn't expect them to want photos taken at the Walt Disney Family Museum preview dates or the Walt Disney Studios and Archives...

    We'll see...

I edited above to include my original intention.

It will surely vary upon each event.

Re: Disney's D23 Fan Community Announces Summer 2009 Special Events Calendar

I've merged a couple of threads in here. We already have this on the front page and in our D23 section of the forums.

It is ok to start additional threads on some of the individual events if there is a lot of interest or you have a review of a completed event. Just trying to keep all the various threads about this same announcement in one place.

Well for some of the "free" events, it alows a member to bring a guest.

I already am confirmed for the Up! screening.

I think this is great. Having events across the country insted of all just in CA should help to quiet the complainers.

While not every D23 member will be able to make any or some of these announced events, it should give people hope that there will be enough diverse opportunities that most everyone will eventually have a chance to attend a D23 event.

    Sounds good.

I'd love to go to the UP event, but I'll be at Walt Disney World. Oh well... thinking of doing the Illuminations event on May 31. Just gotta wait for ticket reservation to open up.
