Becky Cline and Paul Anderson present Weird Disney - 9:30
This was what I was really looking forward to. Becky Cline (God i love this woman) brought out that Disney is always so polished that as Disney Historians they see the less than perfect. She and Paul are here to share. They divide the presentation into time frames. Some highlights include...
1930's
During the 30's Mickey Mouse Clubs were organized by local movie theater owners and allowed to come up with their own promotions.
A silly Symphony character line up from one movie theater. YIKES
1940's
During the 40's the studio tried to get creative in promoting new releases. Here is a publicity shot with a Marionette and a gangster.
Pinocchio and Edward G. Robbinson.
100 little people dressed as Pinocchio were placed on the top of a marquee for the premiere of the film.
1950's
Paul and Becky then shared weird characters from Disneyland's history
Minnie the monster
Big headed Mickey and Minnie
The three little scary pigs
Walt Disney riding with Alice and, what Paul referred to as the Donnie Darko White Rabbit. lolol
There was a Phantom of the Opera character haunting the Main Street Cinema.
The Space Family
The Weird attractions
These bore no real surprises. The aluminum pig, the Crane bathroom of the future and fishing in Frontierland were all pretty strange and very funny.
The dairy barn was amusing.
Weird events.
Parade of the Pumpkins, Pancake races (They shared footage of this) State Fair and the pig races. America on parade which featured a float with a witch being dunked.
A very peculiar thing happened during one New Years celebration. back in the day.
Tim O'Day offers his first hand account of the baby new year incident.
One year they wanted to stage Father time on the castle and run the Baby New Year down the Tinkerbell line. They found a small guy named Paul that looked baby-like. They put the guy in a big diaper and walked him to the Matterhorn in a trechcoat, up the elevator and they open the hatch. He looks over the edge and doesn't like what he sees. He begins to hesitate. Paul begins to leave two minutes to Midnight and the stage hands threw him into the harness and shoved the flailing little person down the wire. A stream of obscenities were strung across the skies of Fantasyland as Paul plummeted down the wire.
Overall the presentation was amusing but left me wanting to see what wouldn't be allowed on the stage. No matter. Becky and Paul were a charming duo. In fact with the wave of a magic wand (provided by her friends at MC) Becky made a free gift appear under the seat of 20 lucky attendees. A nice piece of humorous artwork depicting the never produced "Fish Tote" piece of merchandise from Tom Sawyer's Island's Fishing dock.
Nice.
