NPD Numbers for December 2008

Its sounding like a broken record isnt it?

Npd Group: Nintendo Breaks More Sales Records, Sells Over 5 Million Consoles In December

Hardware numbers:
Quote:
Nintendo DS - 3,040,000
Wii - 2,150,000
Xbox 360 - 1,440,000
PSP - 1,020,000
PlayStation 3 - 726,000
PlayStation 2 - 410,000
3 million DS' systems sold???? Wow!!! Anyone else think Nintendo will delay the DSi here in the states just a tad bit longer?
And just when we thought the Wii had sold a ton of systems in November, they end up selling even more in December.

Looks like the reports of the PSP dying off were premature.

Software:
Quote:
01. Wii Play (Wii) - 1,460,000
02. Call of Duty: World at War (Xbox 360) - 1,330,000
03. Wii Fit (Wii) - 999,000
04. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - 979,000
05. Guitar Hero World Tour (Wii) - 850,000
06. Gears of War 2 (Xbox 360) - 745,000
07. Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360) - 629,000
08. Mario Kart DS (DS) - 540,000
09. Call of Duty: World At War (PS3) - 533,000
10. Animal Crossing City Folk (Wii) - 497,000
Wii Play?? Really??? Well actually, I will admit that I was one of those 1,460,000 that bought it. It was a gift for a friend that only had one Wii Remote

According to another NPD report Wii Play was the number 1 game of ALL 2008

Quote:
01. Wii Play (Wii) - 5,280,000
02. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - 5,000,000
03. Wii Fit (Wii) - 4,530,000
04. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - 4,170,000
05. Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360) - 3,290,000
06. Call of Duty: World at War (Xbox 360) - 2,750,000
07. Gears of War 2 (Xbox 360) - 2,310,000
08. Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3) - 1,890,000
09. Madden NFL 09 (XBox 360) - 1,870,000
10. Mario Kart DS (DS) - 1,650,000
However they do take issue with NPD's tracking of sales as PC games are not included in the rankings.
I knew SSBB sold well, but I had no idea it had outsold GTA IV but that much!

Re: NPD Numbers for December 2008

I can see why the wii play packages sells so well. Why just pay for a controller when you can get the game/controller for just $10 more? Makes sense to enough consumers, and it definitely shows in the numbers.

Kind of suprised to see Gears 2 so far down the list, but then again I didn't even purchase a copy this time around (just a rental).

And I'd love to know how many of those DS's are repurchases. I've had one, sold it, and now I'm thinking about getting another one again... or what if your kid destroys theirs? They are cheap and easily replacable, which leads me to question whether thats 3 million plus NEW OWNERS or just old/current owners buying another system.

What does it matter? They are moving a stupid number of handhelds and it is having a huge effect on the gaming industry. I read an article crediting Nintendo with the majority of growth in the market.

I think something more interesting is the lack of anything for the PS3 in the top 20. COD WaW is the only game they have. Where are the AAA exclusives for this thing and why haven't they moved for a console with this reputation?

Re: NPD Numbers for December 2008

I know for us, we have 3 DS's. Two Lites and one regular.

ALL were bought refurbished, so I'm not sure if those count or not. We have had to replace a couple, which is why we get the plan at GameStop and we can get it replaced within a year for free.
