There isn't really a continuity with most of the Zelda games (Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask may be an exception here??) . Each game is a variation with similar characters. Basically, you control Link (who is a major cutie in Twilight Princess, rawr!), there's a Princess Zelda, and a baddie named Ganon (or Ganondorf). I don't think there's much reason to HAVE to play the prior game first or in any particular order to understand what's happening, since each plot is self-contained.

Oh YOU don't have to tell me that..I've been in love with Link since the The Legend of Zelda for NES. And now...he's just incredible!

I've played/finished Ocarina of Time and attempted a bit of Majora's Mask. Those and The Legend of Zelda for NES are the only ones I've played. I haven't done the GameBoy versions.

Thanks Chernabog! Seeing you list all the characters just brought back SO many memories and there is a tear in my eye! Can't wait to start this game!

Re: Twilight Princess Impressions

The only consistency to the stories is the new twist that the original "Link" lived many years ago (like hundreds) and is now either dead or gone from the world somehow- but when the need arises new heroes acquire his power and follow in his footsteps.

For example in Twilight Princess the main character gets the green costume- and the light being tells him it was worn by the "hero of old"- so it's almost like the tradition being handed down.

So no- no need to play them in any order- but do play Wind Waker- it's amazing!

So these aren't all the same "Link"?

Note to self: get Wind Waker. It's for GC right?

No- while I think you can safely say it was the same link up until Wind Waker- after that they started this idea that there is a new hero every game. They are named "Link" but are not meant to be the same people.

Re: Twilight Princess Impressions

People have debated the "timeline" in the Zelda series for years..The last time I heard it was around the time that Majora's Mask released..It was something like this:

Ocarina Of Time
Majora's Mask
A Link to the Past
Links Awakening (Gameboy)
Zelda
Zelda II:Adventure of Link

One of the directors of Zelda stated in an interview, at the time of its release that Wind Waker was the sequel to Ocarina of Time with a new Link...
The Link from Zelda and Zelda II are the same...the Link from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are the same..And I remember them saying that the Link from A Link to the Past was the ancestor of Link from the orignial Zelda game. Hence the "A Link to the Past" title.

whew...I'm confused now too. ;-)

you got the order mostly right though most of what I've read puts A Link to the Past as the last one

the argument is mostly made because a Link from a Link to the Past is the last remaining descendant of the knights who defended hyrule (which could have all come from the first link or something like that) but the biggest part of the argument is that if I'm not mistaken it's the only Zelda that ends with link getting the triforce and having his own wish granted the game even ends with the line "the master sword sleeps again... forever"

anywho Windwaker does have Ocerina references as does Twilight Princes

supposedly Twilight Princess happens after Ocerina but before Wind Waker

and then Phantom Hourglass happens sometime after Wind Waker I believe

Same question here for me?! I know I've heard of the others even if I haven't played them but I've never heard of Phantom Hourglass.

Thats the name of the next Zelda installment. It will be only for the Nintendo DS. It borrows the same cartoony look of "Wind Waker" and is based in the same water world.

See, this is what I mean by different arguments. The reason why I've heard that A Link to the Past belongs before Zelda's I and II is because many parts of the story that happen in "A Link to the Past" occured in "Ocarina of Time". The Imprisoning War that "A Link to the Past" talks about supposedly took place while Link was trapped away in the Temple of Time in "Ocarina" after he pulled the Master Sword. If you remember at the end of "Ocarina" Gannon vows to return when "The Seal is Broken" and getting his revenge on Link and Zelda's descendants. .At the begining of "A Link to the Past" Aganhim (sc) is rounding up the descendants of the wise men to break the seal and release Gannon from the dark world. Heck I've even heard that the "Sanctuary" in "A Link to the Past" is actually the Temple of Time.
Also, in regards to the ending of "A Link to the Past" that states "The Master sword sleeps again..forever". The argument I've heard in relation to that is that Link doesnt use the Master Sword in either the original Zelda or Zelda II. Therefore, these two titles must take place last in the timeline.

BTW, I'm not disagreeing with what you are saying Jspider. There are tons of theories out there and we'll probably never know how the whole timeline goes. I mean we havent even included the various Game Boy titles in this mix!

Re: Twilight Princess Impressions

Well in MY Twilight Princess game I'm controlling "Cherny" and "Minibog" (since you can rename Link and Epona the horse in the beginning). This time... it's personal.

Re: Twilight Princess Impressions

I named my horse Patches (That's our cat's name)

For my name ... ugh ... on all games I put Daddy. I didn't realize they were going to be calling me that throughout the whole game. You can't change it once you have started ... and I'm not going to start over.
