PS2 hits $99

http://kotaku.com/357906/ps2-breaks-...ng-target-sale

Quote:
Starting February 24 (ie this Sunday), Target stores across the US will be selling slim PS2s for $99. Yes, that magical, mythical $99 price-point. The advertisement specifically mentions that this is part of a sale, but with support for the console dying off and the PS3 picking up steam, is now the time for Sony to give their ageing warhorse one last kick in the pants and adopt this price across the board? Why, yes. Yes, I'd say it would be.
PS2 price drop soon? [Guy Legend @ NeoGAF]

Re: PS2 hits $99

Very interesting.

With the PS3 seemingly picking up steam is this REALLY the best time to give it more competition with a lower priced PS2?

I don't think it's competition. If you chose a PS2 over a PS3, you're probably not that interested in Sony gaming anyway.

Re: PS2 hits $99

Not eveybody can afford a current-gen system. Not everybody wants to take the leap into the current-gen gaming world. Lots of families out there have younger kids who do not need a PS3. And with the huge selection of PS2 games that are cheaper than the current-gen games and the large selection of greatest hits games for under $20 the PS2 is a GREAT choice for families and casual gamers. AND if just some of the new PS2 gamers upgrade to a PS3 then that is a good thing.... think of it as a way to get their foot in the door of Sony gaming.

So this statment is not quite true:

I wonder if the PS2 will sell more units than the 360 yet again, I would not be surprised in any way if it does.

Not only that, but if your looking for a cheap, great quality DVD player/game machine for an RV, Camper, whatever, the PS2 is a great option.

I think the real arguement you're looking for is: Not everybody wants a Blu-ray player.

Also I'd imagine Guitar Hero has a fair bit to do with the PS2 doing so strongly right now.

Has there been a Ps3 solution to that yet? (I know GH3 works in the ps3 version, obviously, but you can't play any of the ps2 games OR rock band with the GH3 Ps3 guitar)

Re: PS2 hits $99

My 30 something brother just bought a PS2 for the sole purpose of Guitar Hero/Rock Band. He can't be the only one....

I think it still sticks. If you're going to buy a PS2 in place of a PS3, you probably weren't going to pick one up soon anyway. The PS2 is NOWHERE NEAR a replacement for a PS3, with the exception of its ability to play PS2 games

The examples of people not wanting to buy a blu-ray player and not wanting to be a next gen gamer prove my point. They weren't going to buy a PS3 anyway, so there's little to no competition between the consoles.

Re: PS2 hits $99

I think this is a *sale* and not a price drop. According to the memo we got this sale thing is backed up - Best Buy is countering the sale with a $40 giftcard with any PS2 system sale.
