Carib chief protests 'Pirates' cannibals (news article)

Quote:

Dominica's Carib Indians have protested plans to portray the tribe as cannibals in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean sequel.

Carib Chief Charles Williams said talks with Disney's producers revealed there was a strong element of cannibalism in the script, which cannot be removed, the BBC reported Monday.

The Caribs have denied their ancestors ever practiced cannibalism.

Our ancestors stood up against early European conquerors and because they stood up ... we were labeled savages and cannibals up to today, Williams said.

This cannot be perpetuated in movies.

Dominica's government has said Disney planned to film in Dominica.
