    Ikea Detolf case disaster..

I know a lot of collectors use the DETOLF to display their figures. They are nice looking cabinets and priced right. Well.. Friday night one of our cabinets collapsed! The rubber grip started slipping from the weight on the shelf, causing it to fall off the rail onto the other shelves. We figured out that we installed one rail upside down, leaving enough of a gap for the shelf to fall. 25 WDCC small world figures were smashed due to our user error! There are pictures of our little massacre here.

Thought I would share our experience in case anyone out there owns a DETOLF or is looking to purchase... be sure to read the instructions and always double check your work!

Oh my... that is absolutely terrible. Good to know that it was a miscalculation though instead of the quality of the Detolf itself. Knowing how I feel when a simple action figure takes a spill, I can certainly sympathize for items like these (which I do own a few). Glad you were able to glue most of them back together.

Don't worry. The blog states that they put it together with one minor error. Just make sure you don't make that mistake and it'll be fine.

We are going to continue using the cases for our other WDCC and have rebuilt the collapsed one. I still trust the shelves and think they are really sturdy, it was a just an extreme case of user error!

Just looking at those broken ones made me feel awful. It's terrible that happened and a good lesson to us all to ensure we have proper shelving for all of our valuables. (I collect rocks, so if those were to fall, it's the floor that would pay... but I understand your sadness).

Is there a silver lining? Can you still buy/replace those ones that are destroyed?

We've started to replace a few pieces already off of eBay. The hard part for us is that we purchased some of these pieces at a really low price, when they were showing up at TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Now those same pieces are going for two to three times as much so its painful spending so much more on them. Oh the tragic life of a collector... haha.
