Disney Cruise Line West Coast Home Port ..LA or San Diego?

http://www.screamscape.com/html/indu...ews.htm#Disney

LA's San Pedro port is vieing against the San Diego Port District as they each negotiate with Disney for the first west coast cruise line ship. Disney is looking at a target date of February 2011 to bring the new ship to one of the two ports. Which would you like to see it stationed at?

L.A. is closer to me and Disneyland, but otherwise I don't care!

Cool Re: Disney Cruise Line West Coast Home Port ..LA or San Diego?

They could do a Land and Sea package like they already do at Walt Disney World. A few days at Disneyland Resort hotels and theme parks, and then a Disney cruise.

It's close to Sea World and the other SD parks, too. The awesome port and juxtaposition to animal parks would make this a great locale.

Either port would be nice ..much closer than Orlando.

What a package deal that would be! It will be interesting to find out where the sailing destinations will be.

because of its closer proximity to Disneyland, I'd say Los Angeles/Long Beach. Also, if Disney were to dock next to the Queen Mary, where a few cruise ships do now, they could have the option of leasing the Dome that used to hold the Spruce Goose, and maybe doing something Disney-fied with it. But San Pedro would do also, and the same argument...that busing people from the port to Dl and back is easily done.

You make some good points here, SnorkletsMom. It would be terrific to have a Disney cruise ship or two at the same harbor as the Queen Mary. Perhaps, Disney might even decide to eventually go ahead with it's notion to one day have a theme park in the Long Beach area.

Re: Disney Cruise Line West Coast Home Port ..LA or San Diego?

I would love it if DCL were home ported here in San Diego.

I've never been to San Pedro so I don't know what advantages it offers.

San Diego has some nice advantages:

Lindbergh Field (airport) is about 1.5 miles down Harbor Drive from the cruise ship terminal.

The Santa Fe train depot is 2-3 blocks away. (How cool would it be if Disney had it's own boxcar.)

Gaslamp District (shopping/dining), Seaport Village (shopping/dining), and convention center are within walking/pedi-cab distance.

Old Town San Diego is a short trolley ride away.

Coronado Island Ferry (Hotel Del and Beach) and Midway Museum (aircraft carrier) are right next to the cruise ship terminal.

SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, and Balboa Park are all very close.

From a tourist perspective, the most popular things in San Diego are very accessible from the cruise ship terminal.

Re: Disney Cruise Line West Coast Home Port ..LA or San Diego?

Both ports have some interesting possibilities, LA would be the obvious choice due to it's proximity to Anaheim CA for Disney to offer Land/Sea packages on the west coast. I think that might attract more folks to make the long flight from the east coast.

San Diego is beautiful, people may feel more comfortable traveling there versus LA, and the port is more accessible from the airport and would be cheaper operationally if Disney where to include transfer options like they do between MCO and Port Canaveral.

It'll be interesting to see where they wind up, either way the new west coast home port will have to be willing to make a lot of changes to meet the Disney cruise Line's Imagineering Standards if they hope to be a permanent home to the line. Something to look forward to in a couple years!

Re: Disney Cruise Line West Coast Home Port ..LA or San Diego?

I'd love to see Disney buy Sea World (a real possibility) and base the ship in San Diego. Sea World would be the perfect transition between land and sea and a great destination for travelers before Disney whisks them up the freeway to Disneyland.

I love Sea World. This is my primary reason for desiring the San Diego port over LA.

Re: Disney Cruise Line West Coast Home Port ..LA or San Diego?

Oh gosh. I cannot wait for Disney Cruise lines to come over to the West Coast. This means I may actually have a chance of going on the cruise, wahoo! I'd love to go on a cruise with my family, but it's too expensive for us...and flying to Florida would be difficult (especially for me, I'm claustrophobic and freak out at the idea of going to LAX).

Do you think they will have California-state resident deals? Like in Florida, people who live there get better deals on the cruises. That would be awesome for us. *squeal!* Also, does anyone know where the cruises are heading to? Is it the usual stuff like Castaway Cay?
