Lightbulb Wondering if the S/S Unted States could be Disney's 5 liner?

The S.S. United States is laying in Phili, Pa, looking for a home. She is fully gutted and really ready for the magic touch Disney could give her.

She was the pride of the United States Merchant Marine in the 1950's/60's. Shes holds the *Blue Ribbon*, meaning she made the fastest crossing of the North Atlantic and the faster liner ever built. ( I don't count the small boat that took the actual prize after a court case as that boat was not a ship).

The Disney line has always prided themselves on the look of the grand liners and this vessel is just that......the real thing. She could give Disney a world leader, even over the fine/magical vessels they have now and the Dream and Fantasy coming out soon.

    Any opinions?.thoughts?

There is no way Disney would buy that old rust bucket.

Because she is absolete. And they would have to replace everything on that ship.

Well Im sure they would want to have up to date propulsion, so they would have to rip apart the stern to install Azipods, rip apart the bow to install bow thrusters to start. Very expensive and time consuming. Then, they would have to find places to have modern navigation. And for guest comfort, they would need to completely redesign the ship to have proper a/c and heat. Lighting, plumbing, and electrical would be a pain in the *** aswell as the money issue.

I think it would cost more than its worth. I dont think the ship can take that kind of overhaul. Just think of the weight all of this would add to her.

The whole interior is gutted, but it still has it's engines...which as mentioned are obsolete. I would love to see something good happen to the SSUS, but I don't think a modern cruise ship is it's destiny.

Morning!..........no she does not have engines.....the orginial boilers and steam turbines engines, and other support systems have been totally removed. New engine are much smaller in size/weigth and easier to install, remember you are saving the costs of biulding a new hull.

Navigation systems, thats a drop or 2 in the bucket.

She is basicly a hull with decks, so all the new systems, interoir comforts all new and to date can be put in fairly easily.

The last survey I heard of had she in pretty good shape as welll.....

Seems we should have at least one American Ship in the Disney fleet. Walt would as well as he sailed on the United States and American flag and British.

And before anyone asks, I am a retired Tanker Officer, not looking for a job!.

    Thanks for your comments!.*S*

Well, Disney would have to build a new ship from scratch and buying the SSUS would save them from having to build a hull, so the cost could easily be reduced depending on how much the ship is sold for.

Re: Wondering if the S/S Unted States could be Disney's 5 liner?

My guess would be the bare hull for be less then 3,000,000.00 unless a plan is made to rebiuld her, her only value would be scrap, which could be more then most hulls as the superstructure is aluminium.

This is really more then just making a old liner run, she is nastalga (spl?)and real history. Disney parks, movies etc. and the M/S Magic and Wonder are mostly based on bringing fond memories back to the guests of the era of cross atlantic liners of the 1st half of the 20th century. Lets be frank, most of not all the other ships are Vegas style floating buses!, and in the SSUS is the last real thing, there are no other Liners left.

    Thanks for your comment DM!

It's time has come and long gone. It might make a nice stationary museum like they've done with some of the WWII battleships. But the SS United States will never sail under it's own power again. "

Re: Wondering if the S/S United States could be Disney's 5 liner?

    Hey there Gino,

I totally agree. All the machinery, boilers (few are still there), electrical is totally out of date and not useable and dangerous if fired up.

She would have to be repowered with a state of the art diesel/electrical power plant, and most likely pods.

As I said before shes a bare hull waiting to be filled with new everything, and lots of Disney magic and Pixie Dust!

However, seems Norweigen Cruise Line is having alot of problems and is giving up on their plans to rebiuld her, so she may likely go to scrap. We are losing so much to overseas....history.....jobs..........a lifestyle.

A shame really.......she would be a amazing part of History to sail on.
