Wicked - plot question (may contain spoilers)

I have a question about the plot of the musical "Wicked."

When Dr. Dillamond sings to Elphaba that "something bad is happening in Oz" how are the animals losing their power of speech? The Wizard is a fake so it's not magic right?

there was a witch or fairy that gave them powers of speech and now they are loosing it. The wizard has some hand in it, but I don't recall what. It was in the book, but the play and the book are two different animals....the play did not really stick to close to the book. It just took some ideas from it.

In the book the Animals are being oppressed and are being silenced by the Wizard and his secret police. He turns them into animals (the distinction is the captial A and lower case a). And at least in the book, the wizard isn't a complete fake and he does something along the lines of making the Animals forget they were ever Animals and thus they become animals... if that makes sense. It's a huge subplot in the book so I guess that's why they felt they needed to include it in the musical as well.

My take on it is that the Animals are simply being ignored and oppressed - treated like animals in other words. This seems enough to make the devolve.

Maybe it's Madame Morible that is doing the magic?

Also, Dr. Dillamond says the pressure not to speak has an effect.

I never got the impression that she wrote that on the blackboard. That could have easily been written by one of the anti-Animal students, right?

Madame Morrible (in the show, at least) does teach sorcery but her specialty happens to be weather control...

In my opinion the "animals losing their power of speach" is a symbolic almost. The wizard is taking away there rights, so the animals cannot speak out. I hope that made sense. I'm not very good at explaining things...

Re: Wicked - plot question (may contain spoilers)

As is rumored in the original Wizard movie, there are political overtones and symbologies. The Animals are pressured to not speak, as are "undesirable" elements in our society, and eventually people more or less wind up being silenced. The Animals become animals; dissenting people end up in the shadows.

Re: Wicked - plot question (may contain spoilers)

The Animals are being forced into silence, and so over time are losing the ability to speak. Thus they become animals. The play didn't touch upon this nearly as much as the book, so it almost takes reading the book to understand this line.
