    "Walt Disney", The Opera

When you think of great pop artists known for serving up cheerful, Technicolor slices of Americana, the name of Philip Glass, is perhaps not the first that comes to mind. Nonetheless, New York City Opera has commissioned him to write a new work about Walt Disney, City Opera announced on Monday. The work, “The Perfect American,” will be an adaptation of Peter Stephan Jungk’s novel “Der König von Amerika,” an account of the life and career of Disney told from the point of view of a fictional animator named Wilhelm Dantine. The premiere is scheduled to open the 2012-13 season of the City Opera; a production of Mr. Glass’s “Einstein on the Beach” is scheduled for its 2009-10 season.

    Disney Opera???

I know it's not the most credible source but I just read on perez Hilton that Paul Glauss is sanctioned to make an Opera based on Walt Disney's life. Does any one know about this??? Is it a good idea? Wouldn't a movie be better???

    Re: Disney Opera???

First I've heard of it, sounds odd. I love Walt, and like opera, but this doesn't sound appealing to me at all.
The Mickey audience is not made up of people; it has no racial, national, political, religious or social differences or affiliations; the Mickey audience is made up of parts of people, of that deathless, precious, ageless, absolutely primitive remnant of something in every world-wracked human being which makes us play with children’s toys and laugh without self-consciousness at silly things, and sing in bathtubs, and dream and believe that our babies are uniquely beautiful. You know…the Mickey in us.

Walt is one of my hero’s. I'm not a big opera fan but I would still see it.
I would prefer a movie though.

That sounds very, very strange to me. Like Uncle Bob, I have nothing against Walt or against opera. But the combo sounds kinda like peanut-butter-and-mustard sandwich to me.

I wonder whether the opera will explore Walt's dark side? If so it may anger some fans. Is is affiliated to the Disney Company? If so it will doubtlessly be a fairy-tale.

Americana opera? It sounds weird, but I like the idea.

There are 2 type of people in the world: those who like opera and those who don't. Growing up I was exposed to it, so for me it's fun stuff. I like Walt Disney, and his story would be interesting. It maybe a better fit for a musical, but hey...

The fact the Philip Glass is the composer indicates to me that this is a serious project, and no doubt is an attestation to the fact that Walt Disney is now an important historical figure, and not just some icon of pop culture.

The composer is not some kitsch opera composer like Andrew Lloyd Webber. He is a composer whose works are taken much more seriously than that.
I should hope that this opera is very traditional and serious. Its an honor that Walt deserves.

It would of work as a musical rather than an opera.

I really can't picture Walt or Lillian singing an aria. I could definitely see a play. It's a difficult project to take on, and I'm sure Glass will do Walt justice. I'm just not sure what to expect.
