I was listening to Classic Rock on my Sirius today and they were playing "A Little Help From My Friends" by Joe Cocker. The DJ said that Sir Paul McCartney said that Cocker did a much better version than the Beatles did. I agree with Paul, I love Joe's version.
That started me thinking about groups that remade original songs but there's were better. Here's a few I thought up, I'd like to see what everone else thinks.
All Along the Watchtower: Bob Dylan/Jimi Hendrix
Jimi flat out blows away Dylan's version. I could listen to that song all day.
Little Wing: Jimi Hendrix/Stevie Ray Vaughn
Hendrix couldn't have a song someone else did better right? Wrong, SRV's version was so clean and smooth - perfect guitar work.
I Will Always Love You: Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston
Dolly has a beautiful song but Whitney made it her own. BRilliant vocal work that few can match, didn't hurt having it in the soundtrack of a number one movie either.
Hurt: Nine Inch Nails/Johnny Cash
This one is debateable because both songs has different meaning for the lead singers. Nine Inch Nails wrote it for the pain inflicted from drug use, Cash did it for pain of getting old and close to death. Both VERY powerful songs, I prefer Johnny's version by a slight edge.
Now what are your cover tunes done better? I hope y'all find this subject as interesting as I do.
Chad
